Assassin's Creed III: Liberation |OT| VITA LA REVOLUTION

The problem really is that console AC is broadly overrated. Too much credit given for the high budget presentation.

Youbare probably right about that. I just hate it when the console version gets a free pass for graphics, frame rate etc in comparison to the pc and yet the vita version gets dinged for all those things. Just some consistency would be nice.

Or they could just rate it in comparison to all other handheld titles. There's a thought.

Screw it all you want, it ain't gonna change the fact that console ports are and will always be a bad idea. Adapting the franchise in a different way like Killzone: Liberation is pretty smart though.

Looks like that's pretty much what has happened here with Liberation and they've been marked down for it.

PSP syndrome all over again.

it's such BS too

Yeah, but the console ports were always doomed. Vita has plenty of good games, but most of those games are in the $5-$15 price range. This game and Blops: Declassified will put the final nail in Sony and the third parties console port offerings chest.

Sound Shapes, Motorstorm RC and Tales From Space should be the Vita's future, not Uncharted, AC and CoD.

there's room for both...

Gaming journalism has it's problems, but I never saw any evidence that reviews for Alice were low due to it being from a "no-name studio" or having a low marketing budget. I did read complaints about the game becoming monotonous and overstaying its welcome.

Hm. I like the game so far, though. I think the presentation is rather lovely for a handheld game, and it seems like a rather large jump from the other portable AC games. The only thing I feel like I need to get the hang of is the combat. I like the UI and menu transitions.

I like the title introduction more than the AC3 title introduction, tbh. There's some stuff I don't like about the AC3 title introduction at all, but AC3:L's feels... kind of right at home, except you aren't conversing with someone else as the title comes up. Like, coming off from AC2's title introduction, that's quite a standard because IMO, it's one of the best title intros this gen.

I also love everyone's accents. Love the French inclusion. I was hoping that the next main AC would take place in France, but this is good enough.

Granted, I'm not far in, but I'm a bit impressed.

Screw that. I want uncharted and AC, and have no interest in Sound Shapes.

This. Sound Shapes is cool, but I didn't buy a vita capable of early-PS3 graphics with a full control scheme to play iPhone games. Not like there aren't tons of awesome indie games with simplified graphics, but that doesn't mean I want the vita to be filled with android games.

I really enjoyed that game. It was a little long in the tooth towards the end, but I didn't agree with everyone that reviewed it poorly. The level design, art direction, and platforming all felt great.

I was high fiving that more than the "no name studio" bit. :)

Alright...ate breakfast, surfed the web for a bit and checked my emails. Back to AC: L before I have to pick up my son from school!

It's funny seeing the reviews are completely disconnected with user impressions. It makes me think they were singling the game out for some reason. Whether they hate Vita (possible given how obsessed the media is with pushing ios/mobile) or comparing it too much with the console games, something is off here.

That's great but this game is being compared directly to the console versions by the reviewers,it doesn't stand a chance this way.

You get a multiplayer skin (lol), the chance to play the cameo mission with Connor instead, his tomahawk and an ammo upgrade. So, nothing big, but AC3 PS3 does have exclusive free DLC.

Thanks. I grabbed the 360 version just because I have the rest of the series on there. It might feel weird to switch platforms at this point. Is it timed exclusive or real exclusive content? If it's timed, it's not that big of a deal then.

They want a full and ABSOLUTELY no compromise AC on the VITA and are comparing it directly to the console versions to prove their point.

GAF hyperbole is a special kind of hyperbole.

That is just unfortunate. If they truly wanted to compare it to other games in the series, pick the handheld games. Liberation feels better than those so far. The thing I feel weird about at the moment is the MP because it really does feel tacked-on...

Who knows, I'll probably feel less impressed with it as time goes on, as will other people in this thread perhaps.

Or, as is common with most things, consumers buy and play games to enjoy whilst critics play games to review. I'm always more inclined to forgive foibles and look for the positives.

It's funny that when the controversy over PR and game reviewers being chummy is still ongoing there are the usual complaints about games being scored "too low".

@Toma, yup

Super H5.

I'll try resisting making a snarky remark as I thought you were somewhat reasonable from an earlier discussion, but if iOS games were even close to Sound Shapes and MotorStorm levels of quality people definitely wouldnt complain about iOS games anymore.

No cookie for you now though.

Uhh, not iOS. That sweet spot right above iOS. Better quality and more content, but still bitesized.

Yep.

They should be comparing this game to Bloodlines.

Not really. They're comparing it to AC3 because Ubisoft and Sony touted it as being a console-esque game for their handheld. They dug their own grave in that respect.

In a perfect world they would review it on it's own merits.

What's up with these reviews? Are you kidding me!? I expected this to be on the high 7's or maybe 8, but it seems that reviewers hate the vita or something because their cons are really lame. I hope this game gets good word of mouth because at least people seems to be enjoying it.

:(

Edit: Well, this is more like it, Meristation gives it a 7,7

You mean like the guys at IGN who on every PlayStation podcast declare that the Vita is dead already?

Did you read Jeremy Parish's review? It's quite thoughtful and circumspect in its analysis of Liberation's problems. The quick jump to "reviewers hate the vita" is really frustrating to read on GAF. Stop the knee-jerk assumptions about reviewers and start critiquing what they actually wrote, ideally based on your own experience with the game.

I stopped reading when he brought up Dishonored and Hitman: Absolution

I didn't read that one. Now the press is choosing to compare the series to stealth games? Funny how they don't do that with the main games.

When I think about it how the hell could you compare it to those? Maybe Hitman in that the girl in this game can change costumes, but that's still a big reach.

Hey now... I get your point but Sound Shapes is still quite a few notches up from all but the best iOS/mobile games. There is a nice middle tier that the Vita has been doing well in.

Is it a good idea to play this if I never played any AC game?

Sure, they are unrelated.

"Exquisite tension in Dishonored" and the "genuine freedom to slip invisibly into a crowd of people and chose one of any number of methods for completing a hit in Hitman: Absolution" leads to the "Assassin's Creed style feels disappointingly flat and automated."

...yeah. No words.
