The NeoGAF 1 year challenge: stop buying games*

Count me in. I have a formidable backlog of Wii/GC games, as well as a large pile of DS games, a few for GBA and several on PC.

I am very bad at playing one game at a time and often set aside a game for months before coming back to it, so I'm not sure I'd be able to handle the escape clause in its original form, but I will set a similar goal for myself if that's alright: for every new game bought, two games from my backlog must be completed.

I'll add you with a link to your post then.

Ys Celceta is the only game that will probably be released in the next 12 months that I'd absolutely want to get, play, and support on day 1. And I intend to do that, so I'm not really "in" since that's one game for me (probably, it's still not announced).

Doubt anything else coming in the next year will stick out enough to make me want it immediately. But I suppose it's a good goal to shoot for with that one game as an exception.

Read the OP dude, at least the huge bolded part at the top :) I'll add you.

Ah, fuck it

Count me in!

Being able to a actually buy something as long as I play it immediately makes it feasible. Basically what I'm doing with RE6 right now ....yes, that's right, I've been playing it RE6 since its release and STILL haven't finished it. So yeah, that's why I need to try this ....and actually mean it this time!

Fuck it, I'm in.

I will probably do it from November to November though. Since we might have PS4 or Xbox 720 next November, I don't think I can hold on for that.

As much as a gamer I am, I am at a stage in my life where less video games can actually help me out. I do have quite a ton of backlog, might as well complete that and may be borrow a game or two from my friend if I really do complete all of them.

Not to mention, I'm not interested in WiiU nor the handhelds. So just the PC/360/PS3. I do not like GTA as much, so can avoid that. However, Bioshock, The last Of Us, and the new game by the Heavy Rain developers will be hard to resist.

So, I might buy few games for Black Friday, I will get the new COD to satisfy my online craving and I will not purchase another game with money until next November.

This will probably be the new craziest thing I will have done, fuck.

Sure, I'll bite. Have a few 360 and Steam games I need to work my way through, so besides a few upcoming 3DS games (all Mario related besides FE:Awakening, so they should be pretty easy to work through on my commute) and the Wii U when the stuff that got me interested in it comes out sometime next year (all of which I'm pretty sure I'd play immediately, considering the type of games they are).

Thinking about it I didn't buy too much this year either. Most I can think of is Kid Icarus, Mario 3DLand and Deus Ex: HR, Madness Returns and The Devil's Playhouse for cheap.

Though since we have a time limit, I'll choose for around 6 to 9 months? Do games people have given you count?

Count me in but...
I will kickstart games
I will new games for vintage platforms (Atari, Zx Spectrum etc) because there are mostly limited runs and won't be reprinted once they sell out.
I will have option to buy 1 game/indie bundle for each 25 completed games.
I won't cancel any preorders I will have before we start
I will buy games for my phone/tablet as those are rather timewasters than 'proper' games for me.

Having the * clause makes the whole thing easy doesnt it?

I can very easily see this turning into how most of my new year resolutions work; well one TINY little snack game can't possibly ruin my diet backlog!

But going cold turkey for not a whole year but rather midway through next year should be best for me. Otherwise I'll have had my backlog finished early and be left with nothing to do but go outside, and the thought of that scares me.

Sounds good as concerns DD games, but if I find a great deal on a rare Super Famicom or GBA game in Osaka, Nagoya, or any other city I happen to visit (or if I see Akumajou Densetsu or any good Goemon game for less than 1000 yen), I will not be responsible for my actions.

Just bring a friend with you and strongly hint that you want them to buy you a certain something as a belated birthday gift but don't outright say it.

Or just buy it and play it right-away, going off the rules in the OP.

Some people of the FPS, RTS, MOBA or FGC community would laugh at this challenge as they only play one or 2 games and nothing else for several years...

With my backlog and popular multiplayer titles, I could easily go a year without buying a game and still have more than enough entertainment.

On the other hand, ANIMAL CROSSING COMES OUT NEXT YEAR I GOTTA HAVE IT

well, after Nov, I wont buy any new games until March (animal crossing) . So thats 1 game in 4 months. Anything after that point is TBD when GTA5, etc other top games with rich content release. No "8 hour" games if you know what I mean.

I used to play one FPS per year and that would be my 1 game until the next good one. That doesnt happen anymore since they all pretty much crap for the most part. (some exceptions like Halo but its on the xbox)

I have a really big backlog (not as big as the op but still... like 50 games) and I think a better challenge would be : you can buy a new game only if you finished/return/sell 2 games

The 2 is my personal choice since I'll buy at least 25 games in 2013 and that will make my backlog disappear so mission complete :)

So could you buy multiple games at once, and tackle them one at a time to completion.
I might do it for 6 months, although, is an escape clause only usable once? I need gta, bioshock and the last of us!

lol you're not gonna go to jail if you bend rules a bit. And yeah, the "escape clause" can be done as many times you want. Everyone here is gonna preorder BioInfinite and GTA V...

I doubt I'll survive the winter sale...

congrats!

Also, how we doing handhelds when making purchases that you're playing right away?

1 console and 1 handheld at a time or can they both be considered "that one game"?

I guess you can do it like that if you want to, the point is to not start playing something and then start playing something else instead, thus for all intents and purposes putting the first game in you backlog.

May I have a cookie?
I'll add you with a link to your post then.

Great. Thanks!
I'll start by adding my entire backlog to my original post. It'll probably take me a while to get every single game from the backlog in a list, so I'll add them over a period of time.
If a game I've added is a new purchase I'll be sure to mark it as such.

Hmm. Meant to work on my PS2 backlog this year. Didn't really happen. I've also been thinking about doing an older console binge.

You know what, sign me up. Maybe if it's official I'll actually commit. I need to work out some sort of order I want to tackle my games in, though.

I actually did this for 2012, granted there are still a few more weeks in the year. It was harder than I had imagined. I did have a few caveats to keep me sane; Indie bundles were still ok and gifts were also ok to buy. But not including those purchases, which were not very many, I managed it just fine.

Good luck to those trying it now. Just remember to avoid CAG.

Im definitely doing this.I`ll buy SimCity 5 then shutdown my gaming purchases till Xmas `13.
I have an entire box of unopened games taunting me.

I'm already feeling incomplete because this is the first year ever since 1998 to not buy more than 10 games in it.

Sorry but I'm too addicted and obsessed with video games to let a whole year goes by without buying 1 game..... even if they offered me 1 million $$$.

And I'm very serious.

Going to update here once a week for as long as I'm in.

Week 1:
Games bought - 0
Games finished - 0
Backlog - loads.

We're off to a good start. No time to play games for now (though I'm in the middle of The Walking Dead and L.A. Noire, should finish them soon) but there's been an urge to buy Theatrhythm, since I've really enjoyed the demo. It's being suppressed for now (until I'm certain that I can buy it and finish it in one go).

Yep. I'm not a masochist, I don't want to prevent myself from enjoying games I'm dying to play (GTAV). I just want to stop buying more and more games, since it's irrational and actually lessens my enjoyment of the hobby to some degree. Are you in?

I'll probably join in after the Steam Winter Sale. Yes, I won't be there for the full year, but I love the Steam Winter Sale! Plus, I gotta prepare myself for the year-long fest of not buying video games. Excluding for games that I am truly pumped for, such as Ni No Kuni, South Park (Obsidian!), and Fire Emblem.

Edit: Hell, maybe I can actually clear my reading and gaming backlogs!

This will be impossible for me.

Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm
possibly Final Fantasty 14 : a realm reborn
Grand theft auto 5
Bioshock Infinite
Simcity 5
Metal gear rising revengeance
Mario U
NG3 razors edge
wonderful 101
bayonetta 2

and so on....

Just too many games I want to pick up and most of those are in just the next 6 months.

With gamefly/redbox combined with disgusting practices such as online passes and such this would have been very easy the last 2 years at least on disc based games.

That said I don't keep a backlog so eh.

.

Only games I think I'll use OP's clause on are Halo 4 around Christmas, Hotline Miami probably this week, GTA5 sometime over summer and any paid GW2 content/expansion (extremely unlikely to even happen over the next year). Anyway, we'll see how I do. I don't have much of a backlog really, about 10-15 games between pc and 360, but it'll be a fun challenge anyway. Let da gaimz begin.

OK, I just got a 3DS with 5 new games, a Steam backlog of at least 70 games, about 60 PS2 games that I've not even touched (seriously, I bought them and then just never had the time to play them), about 20 Gamecube and Wii games that are in the same boat, maybe 12 unfinished DS and GBA games and about 5 Xbox 360 games that I have yet to finish.

I'm in with the following conditions:
  • No new games from now until Thanksgiving next year
  • I cannot purchase/trade for any games from now until Thanksgiving next year.
  • I have a friend at Nintendo who occasionally gifts me brand new games. I'm not a crazy person, so I'll take that if it happens again.

I have a huge backlog, but to be honest, it's mostly because when I don't buy games I want for the future, they end up being several times the price later on, or I miss out entirely.

It's much more preferable for me to buy it knowing I have it for later, than having to spend money with scalpers later on, or not being able to get it at all.

Of course, I could take on this challenge easily for Steam, at least I know they won't sell out.

I tried to do it a couple years ago. I made it to about August.

My opinion is that you basically need to remove yourself from the "game community", forums/websites/etc. Don't download demos, don't read new reviews, so on and so forth.

Anyone who just tries to go cold turkey while they are reading hype threads on NeoGAF and following E3 and reading OTs... you're gonna fail.

OK, I am gonna do this with the exception of the Wii U and games I have already pre-ordered. Also, If I magically find Earthbound for a reasonable price, it doesn't count as I have already beaten it.

All right, after the Steam Winter Sale, I'll join in for this event. However, I won't be doing the full year right off the bat. This will be going on through my final semester at school. Anyway, the restrictions and rules for myself:

The day after the Winter Steam Sale to May fifth. I will not buy any games from that date excepts for the following: Fire Emblem (my favorite series of all time), and Ni No Kuni.

I will not trade games with any friends. Whatever I have in my collection will be the games I shall play during this time period.

When I reach May, I may extend the personal challenge, however this all depends on my future situation for post-graduation and if I get accepted to a certain teaching-abroad program/if I get accepted in the Police Department in Seattle.

At first I was like there is no way I can do that, but screw it! If I thought I could do it easily, it wouldn't be a challenge. I'm in.

I'll still buy games for other people, and I will accept games gifted to me, but I will not buy any new games for myself unless I play them immediately. Some people don't seem to think that is a challenge, but my Steam backlog laughs at them. I may have a video game buying problem. This is more of me challenging myself to not add anything to my gaming backlog for a year. This will be good for my backlog and wallet.

I will update every Sunday at least, this is from this week (I haven't bought anything since I joined):

Bought: GTA IV Complete, Prototype 1, Prototype 2, Humble Bundle for Android 4, Indie Royale Harvest Bundle,
Finished: Sine Mora
Played: Amnesia, Dark Fall: Lost Souls, Darksiders, Dishonored, Duke Nukem Forever, GTA: San Andreas, Hotline Miami, Prototype, Sleeping Dogs, Thief Gold

I think I should focus on fewer games, I might actually finish some!

Read the OP dude, at least the huge bolded part at the top :) I'll add you.

I saw that, I just feel like the cop out is cheating. :lol

But it's all good, with that rule I'm in and should be able to do make until the 2013 Steam Christmas/Holiday sale without much trouble (and save myself some money in the process).

Fuck it, the escape clause should be enough. After this year's Steam Sale, I'm in for the whole year (up to the next Winter Steam Sale anyway). Ledsen, sign me up. Let's see how long I endure...man, PAX won't make this easy!
