Yikes @ The Post. What I find particularly odd about that photo though is the lack of other people in it. Why is the platform so empty?

Saying people are cowards for not being willing to jump down, lift a dazed, sitting, possibly drunk 185 lb. guy off the tracks and onto the platform, and get out of the way of an incoming train with less than ten seconds to spare is kind of nuts.

Dunno but should they ban crazy looking people /homeless from riding the MTA?

Then that be discrimation though.....

It would make everyone else feel.safer though

I mean my back is against the wall and I make sure to have a 180 degree situational awareness when down there.
It's not about race. I've seen crazy people of all races in the subway. But when someone needs to be institutionalized, they should not be out and about in public transportation.

Fakeanger-GAF is mind boggling. Blame the police who weren't there instead of the drunk guy that got himself killed by being drunk and stupid ON A TRAIN PLATFORM WHERE TRAINS COME BY FREQUENTLY.

I'm all for more cops, but I don't think barriers are needed. The number of incidents really don't justify the cost when the money could be better spent elsewhere...
Where?
Is there no room to stand up against the other wall and wait for the train to pass? I can't tell from the photo and have never been in a subway so I'm not sure.
If you've never been in a subway then you have no idea. This compounds even further in NYC train stations. It can get so packed that people have no choice but to stand at the edge sometimes.

Cops can only go where they are assigned so I'm not blaming them in particular. That is on higher ups who force them to go frisking innocent people in the hopes that they'll catch someone with drugs. Still, more cops are seen in train stations than when I was younger so I'm definitely more thankful to the cops and higher ups. I'm a minority, but I'm still relieved to see more police out and about on the streets. They mostly do a good job.

The stations need better safety measures though. Barriers are definitely one thing that should be pushed in downtown Manhattan. It gets brutal down there with the numbers, pushers and mentally disturbed sometimes.

How much am I going to hell for thinking "That could be excellent photosohp material, just replace "man" with "console" and replace the guy with a console shot?

I agree with the Temporal Canine.
Those are some awfully nice shots for being taken whilst running towards the man.

Maybe he has a Lumia

I think he meant stand up against the wall on the track. Some stations have a little gap between the wall and where the train will pass. Theoretically you could hug the wall and the train wouldn't hit you. Most stations the space is not big enough for a person and your gonna get crushed. Not an option really.

Jesus....between this and the story about the Dutch linesman beaten (to death effectively) in front of his child today you just wonder what goes through people's heads...

Being drunk and stupid isn't justification for dying. Regardless of what he did or didn't do, it's fair to blame the photographer and the other people on the platform for doing shit all.

Come on guys, even in that earlier photo the victim didn't have much time to get out of there, and he was drunk. Those trains are damn fast. The photographer really isn't to blame here, although it was pretty scummy of him to get these photos published.

Safety measures for these kind of incidents should really be implemented. It's mindblowing that this isn't a standard yet.

The cost of retrofitting a 100-year old station with 400+ stations isn't realistic. Not to mention the train sets aren't even standardized in length, some cars are 75 feet, others are 100 feet, so door lineup wouldn't work.

Wrong, but ok. I sure as hell wouldn't risk my life to save a drunk stranger that was dumb enough to get in that situation. Sorry if that offends you.

Looking at the photo, it looks like the guy in the photo could've moved farther away from the platform out of the path of the train.

I think suicide barriers should be implemented everywhere, even if the statistics aren't high.. it's still a potential life saver.

Wow. I've thought about the implementation of something like this many times. Didn't think it actually existed.

I recall a crazy pushing someone on the tracks in Toronto. I'm surprised more people don't hide under the "lip" of the platform. I've been told by Toronto transit that it's the best place to go if a train is coming and you don't have to move anywhere else.

The subway in my country has automatic glass doors separating people from the track before the train arrive.

That said, I will never ever wait for the subway train in NYC close to the track again.

>Posting in a thread where a man died being pushed onto tracks.

The hell are you on?

Pretty simple. I think the city should spend the money where it'll do the most good.

Tasteless photo.

This might have been answered but, I know the DC metro has a little spot under one side that you can roll under to avoid the train if you've fallen on the track. Does the New York subway not have that?

You and everyone else in this thread. This all happened in seconds. Wasn't like the dude was on the tracks for 10 minutes before the train came.

Why is this thread full of outrage over the photographer and not the guy who committed murder?

Welcome to NEOGAF, enjoy your stay.

Even if it had the man was under the influence of alcohol and most likely very impaired.

Even a sound person can freeze at the moment and not think about moving to the other side of the track, which could have saved his life.

The driver said the flashes did warn him but he didn't have enough time to stop.

So that thing that you definitely wouldn't do, actually was helping the situation and it was unfortunate the driver didn't have enough time. The photographer had a good idea.

We have quotes from the driver to back that up. Meanwhile, you still say his actions were stupid. Okay...

Well, all these real life internet heroes would've flown in and saved him. Jeez, let them think they could've made a difference.

Easy to "understand" murder. Harder for people to understand someone taking photos whether it was possible to save the guy or not it still brings up questions. Not that surprising.

People were expecting this kind of rescue I assume http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM6a28YRQ0o. This one is pretty crazy considering where the guy was on the tracks.

I'm pretty sure there is consensus that that guy is a piece of shit. Nothing to discuss there,

So, we have to find something to argue about. Neogaf.

Are they not? I remember back in the summer of 2010 when suicide attempts on the D.C. metro were averaging around 3-5 a week.

I was just thinking about this as well. I guess I thought that all subway platforms would have a place carved out under the "lip" of the platform to roll under in an emergency.

Where...? On more cops, like I said, and you said. Barriers aren't necessary.
I kinda figured cops go where their superiors tell them to, not the MTA. The MTA should have it's own funds and means of improving safety standards. I see your point though. More city money should be used to get the police where they are needed and the subway is one of those places.

MTA has no money for that at all. I guess the MTA could raise rates a bunch in order to fund the barriers. The city would riot.

God damn horrific. I actually think about this all the time strangely enough when I’m waiting on the metro here in DC. People also tend to commit suicide on the DC metro lines by jumping onto the tracks.

This is awful...

I've seen guys like the murderer at least once a week. Never engage a crazy person on a subway platform. Keep as much distance between you and him as possible while still keeping tabs on them.

Also, if you fall on the tracks, DON'T TRY TO CLIMB OUT. Run away from the train while waving your arms so the driver can see you. Everyone tries to climb out and gets squished. There is a ladder at the end of the platform edge.
