The question you all should be asking yourselves is why do roller coasters have barriers and better safety measures than your subway.

Poor man, you help until the last possible second. I know it's not a crime to stand by and watch someone else die (at least in the UK where I am) but it should be.
You think it should be a crime to stand by and do nothing? The last thing jails need is more over crowding.

Making it a crime wouldn't make it any more likely for someone to put their own life in danger.

That poor man probably had a terrible death as well. I remember watching a thing where they were interviewing an EMT in a cab and he said that the people just get twisted around until it pinches. They're just "fine" until the pressure is released then they die moments later. They sometimes have enough time to bring next of kin to say goodbye. What a tragic event. I really hope that the catch the miserable excuse for a human who did this. It's reprehensible.

Also, what jerk stops and takes photographs? The amount of time it takes to get out a point and shoot is probably about the same amount as it takes to walk over to the guy and offer him a hand.

And while I'm at it, screw that rag of a paper.

I suppose if he had just laid down flat on the ground he would have survived?

Not all tracks in NYC have this much clearance.

Also to the rest of you shitting on the photographer...I wonder if any of you live in NYC. Trains pull in very fast, and the 5 or 10 seconds the guy probably had would certainly not enough to pull up a man over a 5 foot platform. That's almost like blaming the conductor for not stopping in time.

I've seen someone commit suicide on a track before, and trust me this happens so fast that by the time you even start to believe it, its all over. I've still haunted by the event til this day, I can't imagine what the others who've witness this are thinking.

Also, fuck the post. They can't even take in regards to how his daughter might feel? the fucking fact she MIGHT come across the newspaper and see the very last moments of the dad's life?

Most of all, fuck that murderous piece of scum.

Fuck that's terrible and fuck that newspaper. This is actually one of my fears, I try to stay aware from the edge in case some psycho tries to push me.

Theres 450+ platforms in the NYC subway system (not counting the LIRR, etc). The fucking costs would be substantial. The MTA is already in the red and has been for what seems like most of the past decade.

Deaths like this, accidental or suicide, occur around 45-50 times a year (fact check me please). with 5 million daily riders, you do the math.

Seems like most people are missing the fact that Han was drunk, mad, and functionally impaired. Best not to start fights on train platforms in those situations, I'd think. Nothing the photog could have done, you'd be surprised how fast all this happened in real time.
In all likelihood the photographer could have helped. We can't know for sure but that's probable.

He was down there for 90 seconds? The article in the OP makes it sound like it was much quicker.

If he'd had a clear head he could have immediately started running down the tracks to the far end of the station, that way any oncoming trains would have had enough room and time to stop. :/

I wouldn't help the guy either if I thought there was a chance he could pull me in with him or that crazy guy who pushed him in the first place is still around.
Then use your 90 seconds to signal the train. Or take your sweater off and use it as rope. At the very least just be shocked and don't take pictures.

Photographer said he was trying to use his flash to warn the train driver. Cmon, could have tried harder.

Yea what a joke. Probably lying too.
He thought seeing a bunch of flashing lights directly in his face would get the conductor to go, 'you know, maybe I should STOP THIS TRAIN!'
It's the NYC subway, come on....
Idiot.

Using the flash to stop a train is bullshit.

If the reports that he was on the track for over a minute are true, I have zero sympathy for anyone on that platform.

He was snapping his flash to stop the train.
In panic mode people would be waving at the train and pointing at the guy for the train to stop. In logic mode they would be doing the same or trying to get him out somehow.

And moreover if you had the incredibly moronic idea to use your Flash you would hold it over the tracks. Not aim it at the victim.

The guy said he was repeatedly shooting off his flash to alert the train conductor...I'm guessing he just blinded him.

There's a video of the suspect and victim arguing prior to the incident. Everyone was far away from both and it seemed no one wanted to stop the fight. My guess is they knew he was drunk and probably feared if they lent him a hand, he'd just pull them down with him.

There are alot of complications in this story for sure.

Suspect was caught btw

Correct me if I'm wrong, but why running to the other end of the station? Couldn't he just step back and walk to the other lane? If I remember correctly it's just separated by columns.

I don't know how I'd feel comfortable, as the photographer, presumably profiting from capturing the last moments of a man before he was hit by a train. Unless he just gave the photos away to the shittiest paper he could find as a civil warning of the dangers of subway systems and drunkingly arguing with an insane person.

This doesn't seem much to me after I have seen a video where a man got killed who was running on the tracks for no apparent reason. The video shows a man who gets on to the tracks, tries to cross them and for some reason he just stays on them. Another guy on the platform goes to talk to him explaining him I guess? However he just stays there and the train runs by while this guy just gets crushed. You can literally see the upper half of the body rolling over to the platform.

Very depressing and horrifying video.

I don't want to pile on the photographer, but using his camera flash as a way to warn the conductor seems like such a horrible excuse. Does he assume that every train here stops when one of the millions of tourists takes pictures in the subway?

I'm pilling on after reading that he won't talk to anyone unless they pay him.

Yeah, nothing like a slight flash of light to disorient and confuse a crazy adult

WTF at that headline. Also, why didn't anyone try pulling the guy back up???

This is a tragic loss which could have potentially been avoided.

If the train was stopping at the station he probably could have run into the tunnel ahead.

I can't believe nobody ran in to help the guy.

There's some altruistic people in this thread. I'll be the shittily honest person and say I wouldn't go near that situation with a ten footer. Last thing I want is to be dragged into a moving train trying to be the hero.

I was always afraid of this happening to me as a kid... being pushed into oncoming traffic, thrown over a bridge, etc. Creepy stuff.

(not video of the incident in this thread)

There was an incident here (Singapore) 5 years ago where a woman was pushed onto the train tracks by a deranged boyfriend (after she intiatiated a breakup) and that was what the woman did.

Thankfully we have barriers installed at all stations now (after many suicides and incidents of people accidentally falling in due to fainting spells and what not).

Unfortunately, it's likely this: http://i.imgur.com/50Os8.gif (NMS, NSFW) would've happened if he tried that.

Edit: Who knows I guess. Terrible either way. I'm surprised no one tried to pull him up. Or he didn't try to run the other way, would that have even worked?

That's your best bet if you ever fall on the tracks. Give the train more space to stop. Of course if the guy was drunk he probably wouldn't have been able to run far.. :/
