Wii U Release Day Thread

I haven't seen a single ad for the Wii U yet, despite several for the new Just Dance game on Wii. Admittedly, the UK has been pretty anti-Nintendo for some time, but there seems to have not been any visible marketing in the country to date. And I live in London and watch a lot of TV and frequently visit the cinema.

I've seen a fair few ad's for the Wii U during I'm a celebrity... & Coronation St.. I've also seen a Just dance 4 ad that showed the Wii U version (I've even seen a ZombiU ad).

Black Ops 2, like all Call of Duty titles, is best enjoyed in multiplayer. Black Ops 2 Wii U is a competent port, and the best part of the multiplayer is the dual screen split: one person on the TV, one person on the pad. However, the Wii U's market penetration is very small compared to the PlayStation 3, and so unless you intend to play with the pointer instead of sticks, or really value the TV/pad local multiplayer, the vast online community for the PS3 version would naturally make it a better choice on that platform, not Wii U.

ZombiU is full of jank and design problems, but it's also very unique, bold, and truer to the survival horror genre than any game I can think of from the past few years. It's slow, methodical, a quite difficult, but it's hard to put down once you get caught up in the atmosphere. It's a love it or hate it kind of game, and if you cant see yourself enjoying a methodical survival horror with a slow pacing and high difficulty, ZombiU won't win you over.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm gonna get Zombi U. Slow methodical survival horror. Could be good!

any word about some upcoming patch?

i'm going to play this game after xmas and i'd like not to worry about this kind of things
Nah you shouldn't worry, they're not that common, 8 hours in and I haven't experienced any.

After making us wait this long, I really f'ing hope the Rayman Legends demo has some new content.

It's the demo available at retailers.
jk... I hope.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Aaargh! I accidentally discovered what the shoulder buttons do in wara-wara and now I can't stop doing it!

They should have continued VC instantly. This consoles lineup is so barren, some demo is the only eshop update they can offer... Meanwhile, 3DS shop continues to be on a goddamn roll.

I discovered that one on launch weekend, and I still can't stop

if you use a Wiimote -- I think it's either the 1 or 2 button -- you can do it on the big screen

if there was a Wii U VC I would of spent a pretty penny by now. Access to all those games would make such a difference.

Would this be what is called a "soft launch". It seems like Nintendo itself wasn't pushing it hard,

yeah, this is what i have been suggesting in the other thread though i went way too low on the console numbers the launch here , at least in Tokyo, has been almost anonymous.

hell, we STILL don't have demo units! lol.

I've seen one mocked up - but it's still just playing videos. I think the machine -really- launches around April with the second phase, and probably some big announcements once the launch is out of the way and they can plot a path for 3DS software too.

Could this be what is called a "soft launch". It seems like Nintendo itself wasn't pushing it hard, not like the Wii where it seems they did their best to make it an event. Could they be waiting to do that next holiday or sometime in next fall where focus will be on new and exclusive games for the system and allow hands on use and family conversations to spread worth of mouth until then?

I don't see why they'd want to do that, they'd have to go up against the launch hype for the other two next year. Why not focus on getting out of the gate strong now, when they have the holiday hype to themselves this year?

I think:

1. They legitimately thought the media hype of the launch of the follow up to the Wii would basically sell itself, and they would be wasting money with a huge ad campaign now.

2. Combine that with confusion in the market as to whether the U is a stand alone system or just a controller.

3. A sense among many in the hardcore that it's just a PS360 with a screen in the controller and games they can already play without shelling out for a new console.

4. And then add in that even though Mario's out as the killer app, there's a sense of fatigue around that franchise. They released the 3DS one just 4-5 months ago, and it wasn't well received, and the new one is seen as a shuffle of the Wii version by many in the media. So the hype for NSMBU is less than it should be.

5. Lastly, the Xbox has a strong market presence with the perceived best version of many key franchises, strong marketing, a new Halo game, the core of the COD audience and their own mom-friendly casual add-on in Kinect. It's selling insanely well this Christmas.

All those things together and you've got your explanation of the Wii U not selling out all over.

Well Nintendo UK claims they are focusing on the core Nintendo fans for now but that could just be damage control for the low numbers.

I think that's legitimate for them to say - there's no Wii Sports U or Wii Fit U out yet.Nintendo Land is very casual friendly, but it's maybe not quite as universal as Wii Sports was.

Day 7 of being inexplicably stuck with the default wara wara plaza.

usually it does that when you are not online, or it thinks you are not, maybe do an internet connection test, to check or force the system online. or some other setting, parental controls, I dont know.

That's because it isn't anywhere for a reasonable price, it was really underprinted. I'm holding out for an eShop or Virtual Console release of some sort once it's added.

It wasn't underprinted. It was a limited run and they stopped making copies a couple months after release. It fits the true definition of a Collector's Edition.

Having had a Wii U as of Thursday and having played it all weekend long, I just wanted to put it out there that...

...I've had ZERO lock-ups.
Which are probably bound to happen now
...the battery life on the controller hasn't been an issue.
...the OS certainly isn't zippy, but it it's not the OMGWTF fuck slow it's been made out to be on GAF.
...NSMBU Challenge Mode is fucking awesome.
...my wife and I played through the Nintendo Land Zelda quest in one sitting. It was super fun.

Well, they still may not have considered it successful enough for the long term, because usually that just means it'll get re-released in standard packaging for the same price or cheaper. Like a lot of these pre-order editions of games assuming they don't sit on shelves forever like Rage or Bulletstorm anyway.
I'm thinking of going all digital. I'm just too damn lazy to change discs, lol.
I think the idea to stick to DD for titles with offscreen play is a good one. Something like Sonic Racing is nice to have whenever (even though the streaming quality is kind of ass for some reason), whereas I'll need to play on my TV for ZombiU anyway.

I might be getting a Wii U for Xmas, if not ill be buying one shortly after. Definitely getting the deluxe version, well worth the extra $50. My question is are there any must have things I should get that do not come with the deluxe system? Im sure I need at least one wii remote and nunchuk, not sure about the pro controller? Curious if a screen protector is needed or does the screen hold up fine?

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Yeah, I keep trying that. Internet connection tests work fine, as do software updates, miiverse standalone, and miiverse integration in NSMB and NintendoLand.

Assassin's Creed 3 might have the wost pacing of any game I've ever played.

(Sequence 5 Spoilers)

I was having a good time running around the city, stabbing people as the world's most gentlemanly badass. Why'd they have to go make him evil, then lock me into three hours of tutorials and cutscenes? :/

having a kid around you are never too safe, imho, so maybe consider buying one

about the wiimotes just make sure to play at least once nintendoland with at least 4 people.

you wouldn't get the real spirit of the competitive games with just 2 players.
maybe ask some friend to come over and bring his own wiimotes (that's what i do usually)

My screen has scratches already, and I don't play much that uses the screen, probably just balloon trip breeze. On a DS that might be ok, but I want to play off TV a lot which means looking at the screen a lot so I want it kept neat

So how do I leave a game running but turn off the controller and not have the machine shut itself off?
Home Button --> Controller Settings --> Wii U GamePad --> Turn off GamePad screen

There's no way to completely turn off the GamePad though. If you're talking about the Wii U itself automatically turning off after a certain amount of time, you can disable that in the System Settings from the main menu.

hit the home button then go to controller settings, there is a button to turn off the display. I wish there was a quicker way, like tap the power button or something.
