^If it failed then that's prob. due to the low sales of the PSP at the time wouldn't it?

Who knows for sure, really. I never blame the system first, except for extreme examples where the system was doomed from the start (Rayman on the Jaguar, for instance). There's nothing inherently unbelievable in the notion that this particular remake could be thought of as unappealing: it's a remake of the prequel to the game that really kickstarted the series when it should have been a remake of MM2, and it's got an overly cute artstyle which has to polarizing (or at least not universally pleasing). It effectively brings nothing of importance to the series but is just a re-imagining of an old game, a sort of "what-if" nostalgia trip that I'm not sure is ever a good idea commercially. Heck, even more straightforward ports like Maverick Hunter X and Medievil (don't know why that sprung to mind) bombed. I'm sure the system bears some of the blame, but it's only secondary. I'm not saying there's nothing cool about the game, because I liked the idea of playing as the robot masters, but I have a hard time seeing one quality in this game that would bolster sales. Are we gonna blame the fall of Mega Man Zero and MMZX bombing on the GBA and the DS as well? Maybe there was something inherently wrong and/or rapidly boring with the formula? Maybe MMPU just didn't look interesting?

Someone thinking this kind of Mega Man games was a great idea at Capcom is pretty much the reason why this birthday is a funeral in disguise. MMPU was a horrible failure.

The only reason PU was a failure, is because they didn't DO anything else with it. IT had the perfect set-up to become a pillar for a digital release success, much like the Bionic Commando Re-Armed games.

Why they haven't taken a team to continue classic Megaman Remakes / New Games in that style... Just seems odd. Megaman Universe should have been in that style, even!

A Megaman Powered UP 2V (Stands for 2Vita, and 25!) would be absolutely great...

Happy Birthday Mega Man! Definitely one of my favorite series. All variants, but classic Mega (1-10) is my favorite. Powered Up was amazing, wish they had done more.

@SAB CA- Bah god man, 2V, you're a genius sometimes sir.
No seriously I'd play a Megaman 2 remake in the same style as Powered-up if it got released

Some interesting points here.
At first I disliked the art direction...but I evetually ended up liking it. The game had a stage creation option, which is it's interesting highlight IMO, furthermore it allowed you to replay the game as any of the Robot Masters, so it had a very good replayablity.

...as for the Zero and ZX series, weren't the Zero series selling well on GBA? Besides GBA had friggin' Pokemon and Mario games, how can it NOT sell? With ZX, it seemed like the same Zero series formula from what I've seen altho I have not played much of ZX 1 or 2 >_>; I guess players had enough of that formula which affected it's sales?

Powered-up's content was VERY good for a remake, it's a shame some people couldn't look past the cutesy designs =/

We should be happy that a classic Mega Man game was made this gen and is arguably one of the best Mega Man games ever. (MM9)

R.I.P. Mega Man your legacy will live on forever. Capcom can never erase you from our memories.

The only reason PU was a failure, is because they didn't DO anything else with it. IT had the perfect set-up to become a pillar for a digital release success, much like the Bionic Commando Re-Armed games.

Thing is, making it digital in the first place would have been a failure. It's like admitting that nobody cares about it if it's not a quirky 10-buck release. It would have been as stupid as what SEGA did with Sonic 4. It works for Bionic Commando because it was never as iconic as MM, the last real game was Bionic Commando for the NES (GB?), and Bionic Commando 3D was a bad spin-off. The main Bionic Commando series was already dead and buried. Mega Man was strong enough to see a physical release, especially a mainline title.

I'll never understand what's so hard to get about the idea that maybe if you want a successful 2D Mega Man game you must be new and ambitious without going too far in some directions. All recent 2D Mega Man games did some stuff right, but at no point was everything brought together into one cohesive, ambitious package that looked, sound and felt both like a modern game and a bona fide sequel to the most popular entries: MM Zero/ZX made you play as pseudo-heroes with a Metroid-like structure, an artstyle that I dare say was too radical (though less so than MMPU) and a story that nobody ever cared about, MMPU was just a remake with useless additions (stage editor) and an artstyle that would work on any game for toddlers, MM9-10 were nostalgia trips with no ambition or production values (and I actually liked 9 on a personal level and will be playing SFvsMM).

I've asked this countless times, and every time it's met with dumbfounded responses, but why didn't Capcom ever go the New Super Mario Bros. route (possibly with more new content than the NSMB games)? I think a 2D Mega Man with decent production values, some meaningful additions (co-op gameplay, for instance), a physical release for more visibility, familiar gameplay without any extreme stylistic choices that harkens back to the old titles without being a straight remake would have had a shot at bringing back the series for good. It appears we'll never know for sure though. I think it was worth a shot.

@Tizoc: best-selling MM games aside from the classic series and MMX were the Battle Network games, and those were really a Japanese phenomenon first and foremost. Z and ZX wouldn't have stopped if they hadn't seen declining sales, especially ZX which only saw 2 entries. But yeah, Zero performed decently at first... Just nowhere near as much as MM, MMX and MMBN. Those were really the only MM series that ever were really successful.

Powered Up was awesome. I'd buy it again digitally to play on Vita but Capcom sucks and doesn't want my money so it's not on NA PSN even though it's on JP PSN.

I have no idea why they didn't continue the MMPU/Maverick Hunter remakes on the HD console digital services if the psp wasn't viable. They're amazing games. I want them to continue.

Why can't I play MMPU on my Vita? :(

Happy birth... eh, R.I.P Mega Man.

He was one of my childhood heroes. There were some games/genre's I probably would never of gotten into today if it weren't for his appearance.

rip in peace Happy Birthday, Megaman.

Since I have low expectations overall, how 'bout re-releasing those GB Mega Man games on Virtual Console, Capcom?

Uh no. In fact I don't get why you guys keep saying the franchise is dead.

EDIT: the flying fuck? This franchise had a new game released every year since 1987 it seems for the most part @_@
WARNING, IMAGE IS FRIGGIN' HUGE!

This has got to be a joke? Did you look at the games on that list. over 90% of them are re-releases or minigames with a mega man skin slapped over them "Mega man Solitaite mobile" and Mega Man "Poker Mobile" along with Mega Man X Over are this year's big releases. Along with ports to the Japanes 3DS eshop.

So how are we supposed to download Megaman X Street Fighter anyway? Is it releasing on Steam for free as well, or just a straight download from Capcom?

A fan game wouldn't be on Steam. They'll probably just provide a link to the download on their site or something.

Happy birthday Megaman. Thanks for the memories.

I'll celebrate by attempting to play through both of the fan games.

This thread reads like a damn funeral.

I'll say that if it weren't for Mega Man 2, I wouldn't be into video games right now. Quoting from the childhood thread:

The first game my cousins made me play was Battletoads NES. I'm dead serious. It was awful, and I didn't want to learn how to play video games ever again after that. I cried because all I did was die and die and die and die and die.

Then they let me play Mega Man 2. But even though I was freaking awful at it, I couldn't help but to fall in love with it. I loved the art design. I loved how the levels were designed. I fucking loved the music. Honestly, if it weren't for MM2, I wouldn't have started playing games at all. They followed it up with Super Mario Bros, Zelda 1, and Contra. So... that's how I started playing games.

...

Hah, I think most of the games I loved to play the most either had great music or they looked fantastic. Going back and reading what I wrote about MM2, that game is most likely the culprit behind that.

I want a new Mega Man game. :(

Ever since Inafune (creator of Mega Man) left Capcom in October 2010, Mega Man has been on life support.

Mega Man 10 (March 2010) was the swan song of the franchise.

Whatever Capcom hopes to do, I hope they'll allow Inti to revisit the Zero/ZX formula again. I'm a bit tired of the 8-bit nostalgia at this point, and want Inti to have a chance to experiment again.

I also wouldn't mind Takeshi Horinouchi and his team getting a REAL chance to revisit the EXE/Battle Network saga. Operate Shooting Star did NOT count.

Contrary to me riding with the cool kids and making jokes at your expense, Happy Birthday Megaman. I still believe in you.

After messing around a bit in BN3 & 6, I'd definitely love to see another EXE flavored game especially with infrastructures there between 3DS & Vita for Netbattling to not be a clunky affair. That idea was literally one generation ahead of itself.

Main/robot side of the series wise? I still want to see Astro Boy'd Megaman. One franchise with unified elements, defined roles for the strong (or at least extremely well recognized) characters that have littered themselves through the games and a truly "modern" 3D take on the best parts of Megaman's 2D gameplay.

This is of course supplemented with New! Megaman as the 2D call back series with all the attention given to it as needed to make sure they do the actual 2D games that came before justice.

Was never really a "fan" of megaman when I was growing up but I was never really a fan of any franchise. I just played the games I had which where normally hand me downs from relatives.

We got a NES and a big box of games in the early 90's because I guess they upgraded to SNES or something and I was 4 or 5 at the time so I didnt care if it was the old system or anything I was just stoked I had a load of games to play.

Anyway out of the 20 or so games we got with the NES Megaman 2 was one of them and it was easily one of the most played games out of the collection next to mario 1. Countless hours were wasted playing that game. I never really knew the trick was to defeat the bosses in the right order or anything so I never really got it. I also dont think I knew you could swap weapons ether for the first few months. Never beat it but I have fond memories of it.

Then a few years ago Megaman 9 and 10 happened and I nostalgiaed pretty hard. If Capcom ever released some kind of Classic Megaman collection I would be there day 1.

Thats my Megaman story.

Happy Birthday MM. Hope you return soon.

Fuck you Capcom.
Hope you aren't expecting Capcom to give you anything like how Sony gave that Gaffer a Vita for his touching story.

Anyway, happy b-day to Megaman, my favorite videogame character of all times.

Whatever Capcom decides to do... it's almost certainly going to be a 1-shot. They aren't going to release several mega man series at once. They made it quite clear they don't have any F***ing idea what to do with Mega Man and they felt part of the problem was over saturation before. So we'll likely get 1 new series (battle net/EXE seems out because they said they want it to be a "jumping and shooting" game) and then when that bombs because they did something very stupid to ruin it, they'll finally euthanize him.

Or who knows, maybe they'll make a sweet new mega man/legends 3 and all will be forgiven.

(Edit) Dark Octave: If he was goodie hunting, he wouldn't have ended it on a F*** you ;)

Best thing to come out this year was the ongoing Arche Comics (techincally it started last year, I know) of which I still have a subscription for my son.

I just love how Capcom has no idea what to do with him. Red headed stepchild ever since Infunking left.

Grew up with the series and I still love (most of) the originals and a few of the first X-series ones. I'm still waiting for the game that ties them together, though.

Sven already said some days ago in unity that a disc version of 9 and 10 it's not going to happen, so I think you can forget about a new collection. In the other hand boggles my mind that they don't want to release both games on vita/3ds and you can't play them in the wiiu pad either.

UUUGH >=(

Fuck Capcom management

Not likely to happen just because I doubt Capcom wants to kill off the entire original Mega Man cast on screen (remember, X is not Mega Man and there is no mention or sight of any of the other original Mega Man cast)

Happy 25th Magaman. And happy...19th to Mega Man X, my lord and savior.

FML.

That being said, there's so much more I want to see from the Mega Man franchise.

-Classic: return of the Powered Up! remakes. That first one may be one of my favorite Mega Man games ever.

-X: X9, and beyond. I'm even down for a Command Mission 2! Just work on that soundtrack, CM's OST was surprisingly dismal compared to most MM fare.

-Legends: I'll go with Legends 3.

-EXE: I realize EXE is one of the few series to actually end, but the multiplayer aspect and the general world it created are things that I still miss. Wouldn't mind seeing some sort of spin-off someday, one that works out better than Star Force. And to think I was hostile to the series at first. (a spin-off within the EXE series...?)

I wouldn't mind seeing another X series game, personally. Classic had his revival, the Zero series ended, and I personally thought the ZX games were kinda ass. A small, downloadable title would be nice.

Powered up and Maverick Hunter X were both the wrong games on the wrong platform... I did my part and bought them, but PSP was simply the wrong platform for what they wanted... also no US release for MML1 and 2 on PSP made me very sad as well.

this fucking game

...it ...means so much to me T__T

Everytime I hear this theme, I get a little choked up ...especially since it's my son's favorite game as well.

I really love the level editor theme, and how it changes according to how many of the screens are filled. So relaxing and cheerful at the same time.

Powered Up! Level editor theme

Powered Up! Online map sharing / Level Editor Menu theme is also nice.

Spiffy retrospective, Cheesemeister.

(Magaman Battler Net Work)

One of, if not the, best RPG battle systems ever created.

Who am I kidding, I want EXE7. Just shit all over the plot and ignore the ending, it's the only way to do proper Megaman story.

Happy 25th, Megaman. I spent 400 yen on Rockman 3 on my 3DS to celebrate. Then I swore at the disappearing blocks in Magnet Man's stage. So good.

The MM:pU inspired art for 2 is painful to look at. I would trade two thirds of my gaming collection for a Powered Up 2 and 3. Perhaps they exist in a parallel world where Maverick Hunter X 2 and 3, Legends 3, Klonoa 2 for Wii, Suikoden VI, Castlevania 1999, and Bomberman Wii:U all exist.
