Hideki Kamiya shits all over Kotaku

Because foreigners are the ones trolling him all the time. It was a call to that group of people not a racist comment. Even so, plenty of people ar egiving him enough reasons to be a racist, like those dead threats he received when the Bayo 2 announcement.

This is a dangerously stupid post. There are never, ever, enough reasons to be racist or xenophobic. There are no reasons at all to justify any of that.

Kamiya has been a badass his whole life. Why should he slow down now?

They were rude and they were foreign.
Saying someone is a stupid fucking idiot foreigner is racist there is no reason to use the word foreigner in that phrase.

And its not like japan has a history of this stupid xenophobic sentiment in its past (this is not saying japan as a whole is racist but there are many examples in its history of being PRETTY damn xenophobic)

Eh, both parties look like jackasses to me. Most people here will be on Kamiya's side mainly because everyone hates Kotaku (I don't like it either though)

Hitler was a pretty sweet painter, surely that excuses the holocaust right? and yeah I just got all Godwin up in this bitch.

A Hitler comparison in an argument on the internet?

Why hasn't anyone ever thought of that before?!

Saying someone is a stupid fucking idiot foreigner is racist there is no reason to use the word foreigner in that phrase.

As it targets no race, that's semantically impossible, but I will acknowledge that you meant the term xenophobic. He is obviously trying to antagonize certain people with the use of the word 'foreigner'. but it's still the truth. As far as I can tell, all the attacks were foreign AND the original article did set up a highly jingoistic hypothesis about 'unenlightened Japan vs. the world.'

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Even if the entire situation is funny and Kotaku is shit, I wouldn't want Kamiya to keep getting angry like this. He might get a bad rep from the community (journalism, even people who follow him), which could lead to a loss of potential investors.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't "gwai lo" always offensive (outside of joke usage)? There's really no way to use it in a positive light, right?

That's not necessarily the case with "gaijin" 外人.

Well, it's a contested issue. I didn't think it was derogatory for most of my life, and it's still used pretty casually with no malice aforethought in a fair amount of situations I run into... but whether it could be considered derogatory, I don't know.

I just don't any other chinese terms for foreigner, lol

From that article:

My own sense is that some foreign residents of Japan who take offense at any use of the term ‘gaijin’ belong to a well-established phenomenon of foreigners (usually white men) who want to become completely Japanese (culturally, biologically, socially)—

In my experience, this is quite often the truth.

Lol I have a feeling that quote sums up most of the rage in this thread

you all have been trolled by Kamiya

Does it matter if he said it in a tweet that was basically respectfully saying goodnight to all english speaking readers except "some" fucking stupid foreigners or w/e?

Also am I on everyone's ignore list or something?

lol

A common word in my household... lol

No, I agree with you.

Not saying what he did is right but Kotaku started with the potshots and presented it as an analysis.

The guy repeatedly said he doesn't care ages ago, let it go ffs

That's exactly what it is though. Tons of English speaking people intentionally try to get a rise out of him when crap blogs like Kotaku run something on him because they know he responds to everything.

I suspect he is intelligent enough to realize that: Is better stop responding.

The fact that there are so many people seem apparently seem so... I don't know the word... "bothered", perhaps?... that he is not interested in PC gaming is mind-boggling.

Especially considering the original tweet he didn't actually disparaging PC at all, he just said he's disinterested in it. It's incredible to think so many people think this as offensive.

And that allows him to tell people to fuck off how?

If he's tired of people asking him for a PC port, he could choose not to reply. Instead he disregarded what the first guy said with a "whatever", and told the second guy to fuck off.

Yeah, it isn't his job to port games to PC. He doesn't care if someone does it or not. He already said he doesn't care about it. He's still a dick for treating people that way.

If people don't like his responses they should just stop following him. He neither is a PR person that is obligated to be nice to people on the internet. Otherwise he is allowed to say whatever he wants, no one is forced to follow him

*facepalm*
I really don't know how to say it better?

I'm not taking issue with the word Gaijin, it's the words he sticks in front of it.

Here another explanation:
I think the point is that when you stick "fucking stupid idiot" or whatever exactly he said in front of the word foreigner, it becomes a slur.

Kind of like calling someone black isn't a slur. But calling them a stupid fucking idiot black person is.
Is that not an accurate description of Kotaku?
Stupid fucking idiots, sounds good as well. I'm not going to use foreigners. Remember he explicitly said this in Japanese.

He was getting a ton of tweets along those lines that night and he had already responded to those same questions several times. I'm not necessarily justifying it, but if you read his twitter for ten minutes, you'll see that the fastest way to annoy him is to send him repeat questions, and he expects people to at least look through his feed a little before they tweet him.
I understand, but responding the way he did makes he sound like an awful person. Maybe he was honestly tired, that means he should have gone to bed for the night, not start cursing at everyone who asked him for a port.

Kotaku is like the weird smelly kid in your 3rd grade class who swears that his cousin has a pre-release copy of Final Fantasy 27 and that he's way better at it than you would possibly be.

I really dont know what's worse - Kotaku's piece of shit article or the Kamiya Sycophancy in GAF. Both are nauseating to say the least.

"fucking out of towners...can't drive for shit around here"

No, I'm not seeing what he said as especially offensive.

I really don't understand the outrage here.

He said some stupid fucking idiot foreigners. Have you seen the tweets this man gets? I don't understand why the term "foreigners" gets people so heated, but there are stupid fucking idiots who send him messages constantly.

Would it have been better if he said "stupid fucking non-japanese people?"

He means gaijin, which is a derogatory term.

Anyway, Kamiya is hilarious on twitter (mostly unintentionally).

Is there a less "racist" word in Japanese for non-Japanese speaking people? I'm honestly curious.
The uncontroversial,[12] if slightly formal, gaikokujin (外国人?, foreign-country person), is commonly used instead.[12] However, even gaikokujin is avoided by some people, who might use the honorific form gaikoku no kata (外国の方?, gentleman/gentlewoman of a foreign country) instead. Similarly, some people might not use gaisha (foreign car), but use gaikoku no kuruma (foreign countries cars) if they receive interviews and have to speak in front of TV cameras.

No offense, I don't think you are actually paying attention to the words he stuck in front of it. He deliberately says "some" before the insult in a post that is otherwise amicable to english speaking readers of his twitter. By putting the insult in Japanese he is likely being cheeky or maybe trying to vent his frustration in a way that will slip by most. I think the intent is pretty clear.

This thread is incredibly frustrating. I'd wish someone could at least tell me I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure his use of "foreigners" was predicated on the fact that Kotaku ran a dumbass article that used him as the sole source for an article "about Japanese people."

That pic... that Twitter handle... that "Japanese correspondent" title...

This is great. Fucking video games journalism, man.

Seriously.

This is why I come to gaf to get info. I can't be bothered with clowns* (literally in this case) writing blogs for hits. Might as well go to N4G for all the inside scoops, lol.

If you read the article, you would see how painfully sensationalist the piece is. A Japanese developer, living in Japan, has no idea about Steam and Valve, who have next to no presence in Japan. This is a story? Then it brings up how Kamiya has a "baffling" view regarding cloud gaming when in fact it's absolutely reasonable.

The article is garbage and that being shown to Kamiya had him say his piece. This happened with DmC and how people flooded him about how awful the game is.

People tend to get offended by people who come off as confrontational. Especially to their fanbase
