The *Definitive* PSP RPGs for Vita Thread

I finished Ys 6 on my Vita last night. Some comments about the game as a whole:

-Loads were really quick throughout the game.
-Graphics are really, really nice. It looks substantially better than on the PSP. I think it looks better than Ys Oath in Felgana, actually.
-Much less frame dropping than on the PSP. There were only a few spots where the framerate dropped, whereas this happens much more on the PSP. Overall the framerate is really smooth (@30fps), and this makes some sections of the game look really gorgeous.
-Play with bilinear filtering OFF. The game looks much crisper without it.
-The music is really awesome. It's probably my favorite Ys soundtrack. Many songs remind me of Secret of Mana.

I really recommend people give this a shot, because it's one of the best ARPG experiences on the Vita and it's so improved beyond what it was on the PSP.

But is it worth transferring to the Vita?

Do you mean in terms of graphics? I never played it on the PSP as I was waiting to be able to play it on my Vita but so far it looks good. And in terms of game quality I don't feel I've put enough time into it to make a fair judgement.

Yeah, I was referring to the quality.

Which one is Ys 6? =P

I hope they don't. Ys 6 on PSP is a piece of shit that will cause one to dislike Ys 6. Horrible, horrible port.
The only thing horrible in it are the loading times when played from a UMD. Otherwise, it's Ys. Not the best Ys, but still Ys. When I ripped it to my CFW'd PSP, it was an enjoyable experience since the loading times were non-existant.

I just picked up Knights in the Nightmare and I see it's part of the Dept. Heaven series. Should I have played the previous games in the series before starting this? Also, any recommendations for PSP RPGs that you don't really have to play the previous games in its series first? I'm kinda of anal about playing games out of order :/

Dept. heaven games aren't related at all, storywise.

All of the games listed in the OP can be played in any order, even the Ys games.

Feel like playing a JRPG, and the Vita with it's PSP backwards compatibility seems perfect.

I honestly haven't played that many JRPGs in my life. FFVII, FFX, FFXIII, DQVIII, DQIX, and I struggle to think of any other JRPGs I've played.

I don't think I've ever finished a JRPG.

I've watched Giant Bomb's Persona 4 Endurance Run, and of course it was amazing.

I thinking of getting Persona 3, or maybe an Ys game (which I know almost nothing about). Perhaps ever a tactics game like Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics? I don't know. Are there any PSP JRPGs that absolutely must be played above all others?

Thanks!

• Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions - It's one of the best strategy RPGs ever made. They're all fairly similar, so you don't have to pick up multiple games from the same genre.
• Persona 3 Portable - It's very similar to Persona 4, so I'm sure you will enjoy playing it.
• Ys: The Oath in Felghana - It doesn't really matter which entry in this fast-paced action RPG series you pick up, they're all good.

If you can afford it, I suggest you pick up all three. They're all very different from each other and you can alternate between them depending on your mood.

I recently played Ys: Oath in Felghana and it was very enjoyable. What other Ys games are considered "must-play"? Is there anything besides Ys Seven that is that good? Most people mention just those 2 games on most threads, so I am wondering what's the case with the other games.

If you have a solid PC you should be able to run Ys Origin, it's on Steam. There's also Ys VI, I'd recommend the PS2 version though over the PSP one.

All the Ys games I've played have been great. Ys I & II Chronicles for the PSP is a bit old-school, but still very enjoyable. Instead of swinging your sword you just run into enemies similar to how you sprint with Link in Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Asking for a friend:

I'm trying to find an RPG available on Vita, physical or PSN, that allows a lot of grinding. Random battles, numerous side dungeons or repeatable areas are all acceptable to me. I was originally interested in Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics but after some google searching I read that the games will scale the difficulty as you progress through the story, and with a hard level cap the end of the games become impossible to complete if you grind a lot. Something similar to Disgaea where you're able to level more than just your base party levels is a bonus, but preferably not in "childish" anime style (as I said, FFT would have been fine, "Disgaea" not)

Maybe Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky?

I'm not that far into it but I understand the game is huge.

The more you play Final Fantasy Tactics, the easier it gets. Your characters are powerhouses by the end. You also get a character that makes the late game very easy. If he's/she's your friend, you will buy him/her Final Fantasy Tactics.

Trails in the Sky isn't really the game to grind, since it's ineffective and the emphasis is more on the story than actual battle gameplay.

Crisis Core would fit very well, but it's not available on PSN :/

Yeah, you can't really grind in Trails, you'll quickly start gaining minimal exp from monsters since it's level-adjusted.

It has a ton of side quests(/guild quests), but just a few side dungeons and not really any repeatable stuff that I recall. nan0 probably has the right call in that it's a much more story focused game.

I'd still recommend it as long as (s)he doesn't mind a platform switch to get to play the sequel (likely PC/Steam-only).

Do the Monster Hunter-esque titles count for this? No EXP grinding but farming materials.

Though, in regards to FFT scaling, that's just random battles that scale. The story does not. So eh...

Do the others agree to this? He said that he read FFT will get unfair with the level scaling if you grind too much.

Only the random battles scale. Grinding a little here and there to acquire new abilities for your units will only make the story battles easier.

He is not really talking about "here and there", he wants to grind the shit out of the game before proceeding with the story. But if the story battles dont scale, he still should be fine. I cant imagine that the extra missions will suddenly be unbeatable.

So is square ever going to being Type-0 to the US?
I figured a "HD" pack with that and Crisis Core for the vita would be great!

Well, FFT is certainly better for grinding than Tactics Ogre. Levels are pretty negligible compared to abilities, thereby encouraging the player to experiment with a variety of jobs.

So am I right in thinking Patapon 1 and 2 work on the Vita but 3 does not?

What are the problems with 3?
Does it just not run completely?

So I noticed there are some sales going on like Riviera is now only 5 (also Yggdra Union, amazing game!) , Cladun 10, and Hexy Force 15 dollars. I just got a VITA so pretty excited about this thread and the deals since I never got many games for my PSP.

So what's the lowdown on all these recent Tactical RPGs??

Gungnir, Ragnarok Tactics, Growlanser... it's hard to find detailed impressions of these around. Which of them are worth it?

And while I'm at it, what about all those Sting games?

Patapon 1 and 2 work in the US. EU, its 1 and 3 IIRC. The demos don't work in the US.

You can't download 3 to vita, and it doesn't show up to transfer in the content manager.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
