Oh man this is exciting. Next gen GOW and GeOW is going to be soooo insane!
I just want to imagine GAF's reaction if both Sony and MS do not announce their new consoles at E3. There will be a internet crash.
MS vs Sony Q4 2013. Someone is going to get burned.
This company which will deliver more and better exclusives as fast as possible will win. If anything this generation proved that who is first/last who has name and how much marketshare it had is worthless.
My bet is Sony. They did their homework and they expanded their studios. And a lot of Sony dev studios are now creating games for next gen console from Sony.
GT6, Uncharted 4, New IP from GG, Other QD project, Media Molecule project and many more have more than 2 years of dev time before PS4 release.
As of hardware. If rumor is true 4GB of GDDR5 would be sweet spot combined with 4GB DD3 memory.
Buying both, no matter what.
Current rumor's dont appear to support that setup, but i agree it would be a great solution. Run the OS on the DDR3 and let developers allocate the DDR5 as they see fit.
I'm trying to read through the thread, look at things and get lots and lots of input. Then I stumble on this gem right here.
It's true...I'll likely pick them both up. Probably not day one, but both for sure.
yup its called the wii u.

"The PS4 has less RAM but is using faster GDDR ram, so the overall performance should be a wash."
What this mean?
I dont understand tech, is one more significantly more powerful? Will Sony be crippled by RAM again? Multitasking sounds important. Will third party play to any strengths of systems or serve the lowest common denominator?
yea I guess you are right, I just didn't have time for games in 2012 :/
I think people are ignoring the fact that MS has been on a hiring spree as of late with industry talent, and have opened up more than a few first party studios in the last few years. Wouldn't underestimate them as far as games go.
But using GDDR5 for OS tasks doesn't make sense. Why would they go that route?
If they don't include a different pool of RAM dedicated to the OS, then, I can see these 4GB of RAM being divided into 2/3GB of GDDR5 + 2/1GB of DDR3.
Ram size is not whst you should look at... it about how fast the ram is....
8gb of slow ram is useles.
Well there is difference when you create completely new studios and when you already have those studios up and running and they have done several games during their existence. Not saying that new studios of MS will release crap but sometimes it takes several shots before you create something great.
No with what we have now. That is about that. The OP calls it a wash, though specifies that Sony's should be slightly better for pushing sick-graphixx, and MS's should be better for multitasking within the OS.
Is this wrong?
See other thread? Huh? Is there some secret handshake?Doesn't that depend on how much you know about how console OS(s) operate?
see other thread for details...
Half the RAM? Is that a big enough difference that developers/publishers will finally pass on the system instead of releasing broken ports?

Fuck, is everybody missing "GDDR5" part on purpose?
They will and even if it NEVER comes out if Sony shows a "working" Last Guardian. The world may crash.
Or if one of them show Shenmue it will be like a Final Fantasy 7 magic spell FMV.
For Sony's sake, they better rethink their RAM approach. You ain't gonna even come close to winning next-gen by focusing on games over multi-tasking, and with the tablet market on the rocket upwards, you might just die on the vine. Vita style.
Fuck, is everybody missing "GDDR5" part on purpose? I can already see gaming press following this route (lead by the likes of IGN and Kotaku) writing bombastic articles; PS4 has half X720 RAM!!! PS4 iz teh doom3d!
One is faster than the other and if MS doesn't use another kind of memory architecture it will have more but slower ram and some edram(like the 360) for speed. Many guesses as to the size that will be. It will be VERY interesting seeing what games run a particular way on each system. Even more interesting if its true that the Orbis has 4G's of GDDR and no additional ram. Simply due to OS needs and the growth you can expect there in the years to come.
But currently, right now, these are just rumors and the specs are just specs. It is a great boon to everyone right now but there are a good deal of unknowns.
Two completely different things... GDDR5 is graphics card memory, DDR3 is system RAM.
Are these the same people who think a 3.2GHz Pentium 4 is faster than a 1.6GHz Ivy Bridge?

I love all the people rushing in to say "half the RAM?! What is this shit Sony is doomed!" without even reading the thread.
yup its called the wii u.
Hah, wait, is "4G's" the same as "4GBs"? Sorry, but that leapt out at me.
This thread is amazing. So many of you are clueless about what you're talking about. Half the ram so it must be weak. jeez...
Reading the OP... fuck that, post dumbshit

Not enough info. The OP calls it a wash, though specifies that Sony's should be slightly better for pushing sick-graphixx, and MS's should be better for multitasking within the OS.

Question:
Is GDDR5 twice as fast (or more) to what MS is having in X8OX?
If not, then I would argue that it is better with more RAM.
Or, any devs here.. If you could only choose one thing, what would it be, more ram or fast ram?
Hah, I didn't even see that the OP had been updated. That's even worse.

It depends on many factors, but if you compare fast GDDR5 video cards to DDR3 video cards, the bandwidth difference can reach a factor of 10x.
