Sony : Vice President for Japan hints at possible PS4 announcement in May/June

breaking the $500 barrier will never happen again for a SKU

the PS3 was costly because of the brand new blu-ray tech and the brand new cell tech. they were insane for trying to push 2 brand new tech items on the masses through the ps3. they're not making that mistake again, so i'm guessing $399 launch with a $499 ceiling if a deluxe sku is present
Exactly yes, I'm not paying any more than 399 myself.

Sigh... one job, with an entertainment spending budget after expenses and investments toward goals like education or stocks and medical. Price won't determine if I buy the cheaper option, it only determines how soon I buy what I want.

or 3 weeks of ot :)

:( I miss overtime.

If Microsoft are announcing something at E3, Sony might well make a pre-emptive strike in May.

Hype.

Sony may have too, now that I think about it. If Sony/MS announce consoles with similar features making it a a good 50/50 chance that announcing first may be the way to get favor with the media and consumers.

Microsoft I believe always goes on stage a day before Sony and Nintendo at E3, giving Microsoft a strong lead in the media, even by just one day.

You know Microsoft goes hardcore with marketing.

For instance since Microsoft is one of the Lead Sponsors (through Bing) at Sundance 2013 attendees were told to use any other phone except an iPhone. We had to swap out a few of our reporters iPhone's for blackberry's for the event or they would either lose admittance or be given limited access to the event.

With Sony's financial woes, taking advantage of early announcements provides a form of FREE marketing when going against a company with a huge marketing budget.

I would gladly pay a lot for a beast machine. I'd do that for both Xbox 3 and PS4. I don't want an incremental upgrade. I want something that will make me say wow and I will pay. Value conscious buyers can jump in for Wonderbook 2 in 2019.

Holy shit that sounds so insane...I think an earlier announcement will help sony but it won't dent microsoft's marketing campaign.

I have a job and have saved a lot of money. Like, a lot. I have not really purchased anything in a while.

For the first time ever, I will buy a console at launch. That console will be the PS4.

Throw in a CELL chip and I would pay a extra $50.

After last Gen, I'm gonna wait for the suckers to buy and beta test the new consoles...
Then once the bugs have been worked out I'll buy the hardware...
Plus, by that time, there should be some good games to play.

If they're going to put out beast machine they better take a loss to give it to me at a reasonable price.

Wow that's a load of BS. If they're forcing people to change their phones, they should loan out some Windows Phones to people who came there with iPhones.

I wonder if Sony would ever consider going with a base PS4 with backwards compatibility provided by Gaikai (so dependent on Internet connection etc) and a more expensive model with hardware BC - either built in, or through inclusion in the box of that BC USB stick they patented a while back?

PS4 is going to be a huge make-or-break moment for Sony. Vita has been an unmitigated disaster (especially with Monster Hunter 4 going to Nintendo and Pokémon X & Y announced so early), and Sony can't afford the same again with PS4. If it's overpriced like the PS3 originally was it might be too late for them by the time they can afford to drop the price.

NeoGAF has a total hangup on price. This was not what made the PS3 perform poor!

You have to see it relative to what it does, its amazing that people dont get this!

Sony ate about $300 per console at launch with the PS3. They jam packed it with new tech and ate a huge costs up front. One thing about sony is they truly believed in their product and went for it. The decision could not have been an easy one at the executive level.

What was the marketing budget for Kinect -- 150 million? Nextbox will dwarf that.

MS spent $500 million on Kinect and another $500 million on Windows Mobile Phone 7 during the same quarter.

Not sure what the numbers were for Win8 and WinMobile8.

My call is it won't be called PS4 due to 4 being bad in Japanese culture.

I however am not sure we're not going to see another $599 console. PS3 is still sitting higher than $200 after 7 years.

This is going to be an interesting year for gaming no matter which way you put it though.

You think the former market leader wouldn't have busted out of the gate much stronger if it was priced on par with it's other HD competitor?

I sure hope they find a way to do backwards compatibility. It would feel especially bad to have these HD remakes, PSN games, etc. and not be able to use them on the new system.

I kinda wouldn't be surprised if Sony priced it a little higher in order to profit off hardware sales from day 1 (even if it's a really tiny profit). The way the company is at the minute, it wouldn't surprise me. I know Playstation is one of their most profitable parts, but still, wouldn't surprise me to see it happen.

So wrong. Like if all people will racionalize it like that. Its a freaking games console. Cost will be on top of the list even if makes cofee.

It was easy for the suites because they thought bluray would end up as popular as DVD and winning the format war was priority number 1 at the time. They figured they would make 10s of billions from royalties and selling their movie catalog again at a premium. They did not see the whole DD and netflix type of streaming coming. It was the same suites who were very bitter over losing out to VHS.

what if it was the best shit ever, I'm talking the neez of the beez here. But it was $2000.

you'd still want that??

Rich guys are rich.

Well, not really. And consider it this way, I planned on using it for 5-6 years, so 1 more to go, and judging by PS4 rumors, it seems like I nailed it. At 6 years, the yearly cost of hardware would be a little bit more than 80€. That's not really that much, considering the entertainment value. And it was cheaper than buying and upgrading a gaming PC anyway.

And I know people who payed 725€ for day 1 bundles.

Yup. Totally agree, I want some bleeding edge tech.

The perceived acceptable market cost for a console is pretty fricken ridiculous when you think about what you are getting. For many of us it is our entertainment of choice. The mileage I have gotten out of both the 360 and PS3 is insane for the money I put down for both.

I think perceptions have changes over the last 7 or 8 years that it has been. I don't think a $500 SKU could cut it any more, regardless if the price is greatly justified.

There has to be a SKU that's at least $399.

especially since I sincerely think that this time around, they can really wow us. I fully expect both PS4 and 720 to be able to captivate our imaginations for times to come (watching GGs).

Given consumer price sensitivity, I would imagine $399 is the ceiling. Maybe $449 at most. A $499 console won't sell even if it's a substantial upgrade.

Or rather it will sell, but as poorly as the PS3 did prior to numerous price drops and the eventual Slim.

Calling it now, $450 and $500.

It doesnt matter how much it costs as long as it is good bang for your buck...
A 599 console with lots of fast ram, a sizeable HDD and powerful gpu and cpu to match would be a lot better than putting 150 dollars worth of low end hardware in a 300 dollar console.

What I'm trying to say is, I hope that whatever they put into ps4 , that the price reflects it and that buyers get a decent value for their money.

I'm pretty sure if the PS3 had come in at the same price as the 360, the outcome of this generation would have been different. $599 was the game changer and the back breaker for Sony's dominance going into the last generation.

Agreed that we won't see a repeat of PS3 pricing. With the PS3 they had blown a pretty sizeable R&D budget on the Cell processor, so there was that plus the fabs they made specifically for it. With the PS4 it appears to be more off the shelf components, with some tweaks. AMD already put the R&D into the Jaguar cores it will (likely) use, no need for Sony to reinvent the wheel there. And the bigger part of course was the blu ray player which is rather cheap now. When the PS3 launched standalone players cost more than it.

It was certainly a large factor.

i think it was a factor, but if it was better in graphics than a 360 the extra price wouldve made
alot more sense. i looked at the launch lineup and reviews, then i looked at gears of war and
ya, wat sony idc about bluray or this other shit and multis still to this day performing worse
was embarassing imo. plus the controller of the ps3 same old shit, worse online etc.
if they just outdid the 360 in graphical tech i think it wouldve done better.
they had to get cocky and have their trojan horse for blu ray. hd dvd wouldve won if they dint i guess.
but me as a gaming consumer could give less of a shit.
