Nope. Or at least nope going forward. I agree with the last half of the gen.

their exclusives are only as good as the competition. if nintendo and sony are releasing 6+ exclusives a year while MS is releasing 1 something is wrong.

sony have invested strongly in exclusives this gen

No, it won't. And even if it's true, Microsoft has shown for the last two generations that they start out strong with exclusives and then trail off. Take the past two years, for example.

Actually MS started out really big with exclusives last gen.

Problem was nobody was really buying those games except for the Team Ninja stuff, Halo, and PGR.

Go fig.

Why? Sony has more exclusives than Microsoft this gen(IMO).

Is it going to be different next gen?

Microsoft pumped out more exclusives with the Xbox 1 compared to the Xbox 360.

Remember Brute Force?

Heard a new rumor about the PS4 gamepad from someone who works for a big developer who claims to have examined it:

1. PS Move tech built in
2. Has a trackpad in the middle
3. Controller ID shown in color (did not understand what this meant, waiting for clarification, either means multicolor LED's or a led display)
4. PS4 Coming December 13

Trackpad? Please only use it for the browser, Sony.

After thinking about it Sony going to have very hard battle .
If games look as good on both consoles it going to come down to services and features.
Which MS seem to be allowing you to do more while playing games which is a big plus .
Don't think Sony first party going to be enough

Way way too early to tell. We need to get a good idea about their goals/aims with the systems.

As I see it, at this point at least, MS is the unknown. MS came into this gen as THE gamers console. But they have gone on a different path later in the gen. Sony messed up hard at the start but then got their shit together and built a really strong and diverse first party. I think that's telling on what their goal is with the next system

At the end of the day, all the media and such features are secondary to a gaming console. It comes downs to games and maybe some wow factors (like motion controls on the wii)

games look the same on the current consoles though

it all comes down to exclusives imo

MS pretty much gave up on exclusives

So services or exclusive games?
Seems like an easy decision to me, but I buy a console to play games.

I don't think they game up on them , i expect to see a big push by MS come next gen .
Where both Sony and MS going to have a good amount of exclusive so it comes down to services and features where MS seem to have the edge .
While MS might hot have as much as Sony if any body thinks MS not coming out the gate with a few Gear like exclusives kidding there self .

Because there's this insane belief that some (SOME, not all, not even a majority) Sony fans believe that they are the company who cannot fail at providing bleeding edge tech and whatnot since they're the most "hardcore friendly" between MS and Sony.

But the PS3 and PSVita are good indicators.

I think it is quite myth people are buying for service. The feature such as accessors I could agree with that, see at Wii Balance Board and Kinect.
I think software and price is very important too. Timing as well.

ie PS4's GT6 launch in EUR around sametime with 720's launch will give Sony edge for EUR.
or
Costly PS4 weak launch titles and cheaper 720 better launch titles will give MS in EUR.

There are two things that will make this potentially difficult for Sony:

- Price
- Pay for Online

If they launch within reason of Durango, and keep the free online, they're sitting comfortably for the next generation. I really don't see them not leading unless Microsoft pulls off a Wii, which is unlikely if anything. If the current generation showed anything, it's that the Playstation brand is very, very strong. It's not an exaggeration to call how they handled the PS3 a disaster. Just mistake after mistake after mistake. They still managed to recover though.

They just need to continue providing good value through PS Plus, a steady stream of first party exclusives, and be a great general media device. If they manage to mess up again, then they really deserve to fail.

The competition between Orbis and Durango is going to be North America. That's where MS is strongest and where Sony lost a lot of market share.
For some reason I have this feeling that when Durango launches, Xbox Live will be totally different from what it is now, an that includes paying for online multiplayer.

This comment is going to look pretty stupid come E3.

yeah MS isn't stupid. if not first party they will definitely have 1-2 big third party exclusives ready for the next system

I do think Sony will have an advantage over the sheer number of potential third party exclusives though, due to Japanese third parties. Time will tell

MS will start off strong, either in moneyhatting the hell out of Big IP's or showing off big ass IP's. Most likely the latter since they need them the most. They know how to play the game.

I wish the market was more like it was ten years ago, because even then consoles were selling fine and there was more interest in developing for dedicated handhelds. You didn't have the choice of what to play mobile games on, so it was more of a win-win situation.
The market was definitely more....flexible then it is now, pertaining to buying games/consoles. I think next gen will be rocky for both companies.
Growing up with NES/SNES, at the time I felt the PS1 and eventually PS2 provided titles that were out of boundaries to what we were used to. Japanese RPGs were unique and provided deep storylines which Nintendo games never provided. There were no equivalent of Einhander (Squaresoft), FF7, MGS, Driver and GT on any other systems. Having 1000+ games to choose from didn't hurt either.

Japan was on a high note last gen got damn they even took a hit this gen.

I honestly believe that a vast majority of people do not give a damn about features and they're betting on the wrong horse. Microsoft seems to want to create an all-in-one device, but that already exists. It's called a smart phone. I felt like they lost their way the second half of this generation by focusing on a bunch of features no one was clamoring for.

it isnt going to be different

MS never had alot of exclusives this gen. more developer support at the beginning of this gen DOES NOT=more exclusives

Won't that be super big ?

For controller id color, it's probably the Move light ball or light LED.

Your friend may be pulling your leg tho.

A mix for sure. The one thing that will be nice is the return to 3rd party exclusives. The best part is there is a VERY good financial reason for some companies to go to something like that versus double dipping a development schedule. Especially if there is "lets just say" a parity contract being enforced. This swings both ways by the way. Of course. For both Sony and MS and WiiU:)

I would say that it paid off big time. They were able to keep prices of the system way up with services and kinect. With out those they would be in rough shape IMO. I would not be shocked to see lot of big time exclusive games come E3 for MS. I think they sent their teams to next generation sooner because they could. Sony still has big teams working on current generation because they have to. While it would suck to wait a few months but damn I wish the last of us was a launch PS4 title.

Paying a ton of money for third party exclusives makes zero sense now. You may even end up getting burned by doing that like Sony did with LA Noire.

What exclusives does Microsoft have? Halo and Gears? They jumped ship 2 years ago and focused on being the best box for COD.

Third parties.

yeah when 3rd party exclusives still existed, they're extinct.

The reports of their death may be greatly exaggerated. Did it ever occur that the death of the 3rd part exclusive had a lot to do with the fact that nobody was willing to pay for them? MS had several exclusive JRPGs they bought for Japan (that ultimately did nothing over there). However, at the beginning of the gen it makes sense to spend the big bucks for those because it's cheaper than supporting the studios long-term.

Let's look at what happened to the Vita. How did Nintendo securing Monster Hunter work out for them? I thought third party exclusives were extinct? But no, they are alive and well and a well-chosen one can do wonders for a platform.

What if COD is Durango exclusive? Elder Scrolls 6? How will that affect the NA market?

I should point out that having more services and features plus games looking the same is huge marketing point for MS.
If it's anything MS knows how to do is market stuff .
For eg lets you can record stuff MS saying play the next COD while recording a TV show would be huge if Sony can't do with amount marketing dollars they would put behind it .

Do you have any indication about these exclusive 3rd-party games having a PC version or being timed-exclusives?

Sony has probably had certain studios working on PS4 titles for at least two years now. Sucker Punch, GG, and Santa Monica come to mind.

IDK Karak it depends. I remember Rockstar was upset over the deal with MS on GTA4. Something about losing money over the DLC or something. Sony lost big time on LA Noire. It depends on the Devs most likely

I still feel next gen will come down to who has the better ecosystem and still always the best "freedom" without being tied down to a wall garden. The whole thing that "exclusive games=automatic winners" is over. It's all about the best all around media hub.

The misconceptions surrounding 1st party support are interesting, that's for sure.

Will be slightly disappointed if Durango is more powerful than Orbis, only because I want Sony's first party to have the absolute best they can to show of that tech, that and I generally prefer buying multi platform titles on PS3 due to free online. Be annoying if Microsoft has the edge on multi titles again due to a slight performance advantage.

I have a feeling many at GAF would feel this way. If it turns out true, the bitter tears will be hilarious.

Interesting seem MS went all out with customization while Sony did not .

The more custom the hardware, the more expensive it may be.

Ok, fine. But on paper the PS3 seemed like it could dwarf the 360 in 2005.

The RSX also did 1.8TFLOPs on paper, which is why we shouldn't pay attention to such specs. The PS4 or 720 can both look more powerful on paper when looking at certain angles, but we won't know the whole story until both are out.

their exclusives are only as good as the competition. if nintendo and sony are releasing 6+ exclusives a year while MS is releasing 1 something is wrong.

Previous exclusive don't matter as much during the launch of a console. It is time for the companies to launch new IPs and hope some stick for the long term.

There is that. Mixed in with the GTA side stories price announced making people think that large amount needs to change hands. Its great to go back and read the dev intereviews who did some exclusives at the starting of the last 2 gens and you get a good picture that a cash payout wasn't in the cards. Access to specific tools, assistance from companies own devs, and lack of reliance on parity contracts was a huge boon.

A smart company wouldn't go for a massive 3rd party dev that requires a huge payout. But instead go for a couple of the smaller companies that would LOVE to have that extra help both financially and coming to grips with new systems. It spreads your dev portfolio and gets you quantity for less and lets you see if anything catches in the new gen.

Exactly so.

I think for E3 2013, they'll show
2 Rare titles
1 Lionhead title
1 Epic title
Alan Wake 2
The Black Tusk Shooter
Ryse

in addition to first previous of COD, Battlefield, Destiny, and other third party games.

7 exclusives for E3 isn't bad, unless Sony shows off 10 or more.

I expect MS to have their most amazing E3 in terms of games shown. I don't even know the OS features are even ready to be demoed, since the teams would be in crunch mode.

Nintendo already gave you a preview of what to expect when they acquired Bayonetta 2.

I expect at least 1 exclusive FF game for PS4
Luminous FF Versus XIII

And another third party exclusive for PS4 that nobody saw coming.

I don't know a single person who owns an actual DVR. My TV allows me to save to SD card or USB HDD, but I have never used this functionality.

If I want to watch something on TV after it airs, I either use that channel's catch-up web app or download the torrent.

Add Activision games such as Destiny and CoD. Don't think we will see a next gen cod until 2014

Sony wise I def see atleast Killzone 4, Sucker Punch IP, SSM IP etc.

Idk but I'm hype

This is what I was thinking. Wasn't Obsidian working on a 720 exclusive before MS canned it? I think there are devs who would be more than happy to have work.

Sony won't show that many I think. Not because they don't have that much cuz I'm certain they do, but because unlike MS and Nintendo they spread out their reveals much more evenly through E3/GC/TGS.

The PS3 can record TV shows while playing games. Just not available in the US.
