VGLeaks: PlayStation 4 "Orbis" Roadmap

Any more info you want to spill?

I would love to, except I'm too lazy to find the patent. My information isn't entirely accurate, for example some of the information can be found the in the latest rumor threads. The steamroller, 4GB GDDR5, and an 8xxx GPU are based off words in the rumor mill. That information is subject to change. However the architecture is all confirmed. Two GPUs, one CPU and two separate memory pools one a single chip is confirmed in the patent SCE released in December.

I wouldn't be surprised if they will reboot Killzone, Infamous and God of War with new characters, to breath some fresh air into these games.

Personally I would MUCH rather have them not and delve out into whole new worlds than a reboot. Just in my opinion.

One of Sonys biggest mistakes in the past was that they didn´t build strong IPs over several generations like Nintendo and Microsoft, except for Gran Turismo.

Uncharted could be such an IP, it would be foolish to drop it.

Right. But that's not what we are talking about.
I said reboot. Far different from moving forward.

LBP sold a shit load of dlc so I expect whoever made lbp vita to continue making them on ps4.

It also sold a shit load of retail copies. The first LBP sold 4.5m and I assume the sequels sold well too. Coupled with the endless DLC, the revenue from the franchise must be huge.

I fucking hate the game(s), but you have to give credit where it's due.

outside of Halo there is no MS franchise that is as strong

outside of Mario (on home consoles) there is no Nintendo franchise that can allow you to make that claim (Zelda sells no more than any other Sony exclusive)

and Sony has GT

people really need to stop saying this because frankly it's bullshit, (especially in MS case) Sony sold over 200 million consoles on the same internal philosophy as this generation and this generation they sold over 100 million more, they never needed this mystical "strong IP" which doesn't exist by the internet meaning of the phrase and by the real world meaning of the phrase they have plenty of. Sony will be just fine by keeping on doing what they're doing.

I would love to see if one of Sony's first parties does some form of sci-fi WRPG. Or buy out Obsidian and then let them weave a tale while ICE team provides the tech.

Sony doesnt need to buy third-party exclusives, they have enough IP's.

Uncharted 4
InFAMOUS 3
Killzone 4
God of War 4
Gran Turismo 6
LittleBigPlaned 3
Resistance 4
Ratchet & Clank franchise
Jak & Dexter franchise
The Last of Us 2 (you know its gonna get a sequel)

And im sure we'll get some new IP's.

Syphon Filter?

Ram
Esram
More CPU power
More customization
GCN2

People have been expecting 8850 / 8870 equivalent cards to be in Durango. I think 8750/8770 is more likely the case for Durango, and 8830/8850 for Orbis. Orbis gpu has 50% more compute units. [Proelite, B3D forums]

According to you both use GCN2 - Orbis has 50% more CUs and faster RAM, there must be a lot of "customization" or the difference between 8 cores with low clocks is really that much better than 4 cores with higher clock to let the 720 still come up on top.

Sony has carried quite a few IPs from the PS2->PS3, while making new ones.

Sly Cooper
Ratchet and Clank
Gran Turismo
God of War
Twisted Metal
MLB The Show
Killzone
SOCOM

Of course how much they invest in the older ones (if at all) depends on the success of the new IPs. I doubt we will see another Resistance game.

Way way too early to tell. We need to get a good idea about their goals/aims with the systems.

As I see it, at this point at least, MS is the unknown. MS came into this gen as THE gamers console. But they have gone on a different path later in the gen. Sony messed up hard at the start but then got their shit together and built a really strong and diverse first party. I think that's telling on what their goal is with the next system

At the end of the day, all the media and such features are secondary to a gaming console. It comes downs to games and maybe some wow factors (like motion controls on the wii)

It's almost as if MS and Sony switched focuses. Sony started out touting a super media device and ended with all these great exclusives, while MS showed all the great exclusives first, and is now focusing more on a super media device.

I wonder how both of them will start off the coming gen.

I think he's referring to performance equivalents, not necessarily strict architecture/family affiliations. I would be skeptical, though, that an architecture refresh would overcome the suggested difference in resources. I said before, long before any of this was suggested, that at this stage in gpu evolution I'd take a more powerful slightly older gen card over a newer one with less grunt. But I'm also still skeptical that MS would go with a smaller gpu like that, so...

SOCOM can use a reboot but I don't know if it has the brand presence today as it once did in the days of PS2.

Sly Cooper: I wonder whether this'd be a viable IP for next gen.

Ratchet and Clank: After ACiT, unless otherwise a release is produced within the first year of PS4, when the consoles are game starved, I think it'll not really do well.

Jak and Daxter: Another gem of the bygone era and one which I personally don't think will draw a lot of people.

As the number of gamers have gone up so have their ages and tastes with time. The market has shift towards more mature titles in general with difficulty level that harken back to decades past is being welcomed back with open arms (DS and DS :p).

Personally, I hope that the sale of CoD dies down. It'll give other games (like TW franchise, the next ME for what its worth, Fallout, Metro, etc) a chance to get more exposure and sales.

Exactly. The Saturn was touted as being more powerful than the PS1, and look at how long that system lasted for.
Haha, I still remember my mate face when he saw his favorite game on his Saturn running on my PSX looking 10x better
I told him when I saw him playing that something wasn't right about the Saturn version
He lost his mind when he played Tekken & Ridge Racer
More powerful my ass

No way Sony is going to stop making God of War. Uncharted was Sony's breakout ip just like GT and GOW the previous gens. LBP sold a shit load of dlc so I expect whoever made lbp vita to continue making them on ps4.

Agree 100%. GoW, UC, GT, and LBP are four IPs that Sony should continue with next Gen. I'd add Killzone as well since I'd love to see that franchise get more love. Can't wait to see these games with more power.

I dunno about SOCOM, it's brand faded this gen.

I hope to see a new Killzone(s) and Uncharted(s). Considering the success GG and ND have had this generation i wouldn't be surprised if they are working on multiple titles (new ip's) for the PS4.

I think GT6 is a given. If they can release that at launch (unlikely) or soon after launch, it's going to move Hardware. The PS3 simply didn't have the power to do what Kaz had in mind for GT5. I think it's logical the PS3 only to sees one GT title. Sony needs to fast-track GT6 on the PS4. My fingers are crossed that it's been in development since before GT5 was released.

I also hope there is a general return to Japanese game success. Demon's Souls was excellent and difficult (something that seems to be a thing of the past). More recently, early reviews of Ni No Kuni are stellar. The Studio-5 and Studio Ghibli collaboration was a stroke of genius. I REALLY want to see more of this. Hell, maybe Sony can pull The Last Guardian out of vapor ware status.

I really hope Sony can release that thing this year.

I hope that they can somehow lower the development costs (across all platforms), so we can get some more niche games. (IE. Demon's Souls...a game that should have never been).

I hope some developers realize they can still make a killing making games that are games and not interactive explosions.

I hope developers push the medium even further into mature themes and story lines.

I hope...

Some I.Ps just need to be left behind.

IMO

Resistance
Killzone
Infamous
Socom

Just let them go Sony. Make new, better shit because those franchises are just over for now.

I believe it would be much more interesting to bring back Syphon Filter in some new re imagined form. The Getaway, Legend of Dragoon, you know bring back stuff instead of developing yet another sequel to these franchises that are dying a slow death.

Of course, new Ips are always the best part of new generations.

Isn't that because they are being rebranded?

Maybe he means that Sony is getting the 8 series that is still GCN, and Durango will have GCN2?

MS and AMD have done that before with the Xbox 360. Maybe that's even one of the reasons GCN2 isn't releasing early 2013, because of MS?

They should kill off socom or give it to a competent developer.

Killzone is still an interesting franchise, that is now good but could be great.

Resistance is probably dead, but i still have so fond memories of the first game, i really wished the sequels would have expanded on that game.

5-10% difference is meh to me. Either way.

As for MS having more exclusives then Sony, lol. Sure if you count timed exclusives. I will give you that. But I don't see same strategy working this time. Release same year, PS4 having on par or lower price...Japan and Pal market in the pocket. Now only US remains and without 1 year head start and much lower price, they won't do as well as they did this gen.

EDIT: BTW maybe we have reached the point where we start to ignore Proelite comments. dude is all over the place and seem like he is trolling or misleding, in which case that is supposed to give you a ban if I am correct?

Yeah, I really hope COD dies down a lot. I don't want to see it die, but I don't want it to stay the juggernaut that it is. It is sucking too many dollars out of other games.

No one game should be as massive as that. It fosters way too many copycats.

Killzone is still an interesting franchise, that is now good but could be great.

If they do Killzone again they need to get some semi competent writers and actors in. Graphically it was excellent, the gameplay was mostly solid... but god, the single player story (and all that surrounds it) was awful.

...and for the the love of god no more Rico.

They had great actors, especially the bad guys. The story was no worse than any other shooter. Rico was great in KZ3. So you were wrong about everything!

Xbox has had more exclusives this gen. Fact.
If we count timed exclusives, DLC exclusives and Kinect exclusives maybe.
But if we talk about full games with a certain quality (let's say 85%+ Metacritic aprox.) that remain exclusive and did a good job in sales (let's say 3/4M+ aprox.) I doubt it. Even counting the games that are also in PC.
I think that Sony had more big exclusive IPs during this gen that may be relevant for next gen, and even more if we count the ones that can go back from 2 or 3 gens ago.
And in addition to this, Sony's studios are more used to release new succesful IPs even if like everyone had their failures. So they are likely to rely less in existing IPs.
Sony won't lack big exclusive IPs, specially because most of them are owned by them.

Shadow of the Beast!
Sony should buy the rights to that franchise. Thats what we need, more PSN side scroller's!
Shadow Complex was awesome on the Xbox

Hopefully more psychedelic guitar rifts this generation.

I think Sony owns the rights already. They did purchase Psygnosis, developer of said franchise.

I would like to know who did concept art for that IP, it's amazing. Look at that game over screen art

Well, the villains were kinda interesting but they didnt show enough of them. Also i prefer the story to be of a somewhat bigger scale, with space fights, and really get the sense of war. Also would like if we would get to see the actual people that lived on helghan (but after kz3 i think thats out of the question? i dont remember the story 100% anymore).
