VGLeaks: PlayStation 4 "Orbis" Roadmap

This happened last time they tried that:

I have a cheap Chinese knock-off of that boomerang controller and it is without a doubt the most comfortable controller I've ever held. I posted some thoughts (and pics) here:

It's a shame that people complained about that controller before even holding one because it would have been way better than what we ended up getting with the sixaxis/dualshock3. I hope Sony revisit it, or at least offer it as a retail option even if it's not bundled with the PS4. I can't stress enough just how nice it is to hold :)

Always felt that Sony buckled far too easily on that controller. The Dualshock imo was a bad controller on the PS1 and the PS2 and still is a bad controller period, but i guess some people aren't up for new things.

If they create a controller that they genuinely believe is superior to the Dualshock then they should stick with it, sure some people will sputter and rage for a while but eventually they will cork it and use the thing. If they want to play those Sony games that they like so much either they use the controller or not play the games.

I was always disappointed by the absurd internet reaction to that controller as well. Whenever people complain about the ergonomics of the dual shock 3 I like to remind people that Sony may have created the most comfortable controller design ever, but the internet was in too much of a hurry to make jokes to actually wait and see if it was any good. In hind sight Sony should have not locked the controller behind glass at E3 2005. Hands on experience from journos might have helped. Instead they just pointed and laughed with everyone else.

Feel free to buy the "classic controller" for $50 then if you're not happy with the PS4 controller :)

That would actually be the perfect business move. Have a new controller packed in and then separately sell DualShock 4. Sort of like how Nintendo has the separate Pro controller for WiiU, but Sony would sell so many more DualShocks because people are so attached to it. Also, developers will have to try something new with the new controller and they can have the option to support DualShock 4 as well instead of snubbing new ideas like they did with the Move.

Probably the system since without the feature would be useless.

NFC adds a lot more to PS4 than you realise, with Miracast and NFC Sony can create a Wii U competitor for literally $5 in additional cost that will be compatible with all Android phones and tablets including their own Xperia products. Think Xbox Smartglass + Remote play + Wii U second screen using any Android tablet or phone that has the app and a Miracast chip.

You are probably right, and NFC may be real useful in the future, but i ihave my doubts. As i said in the skype/xbox thread, these consoles are going to be entertaintment hubs in the living so NFC could probably add real value for non gaming related as pushing vids music or photos to the TV from smartphones and such. it is a pitty that Vita has no NFC.

Sony enabled an NFC card reader in Japan for PS3 in 2007 used for credit card payments via Felica Cards or Phone payment system. Nintendo has stated they will also be using Felica payment system via NFC on WiiU so I think DualShock 4 will have NFC built in.

that could be really useful for PSN transactions :)
I think that charging for PSN would be a tremendous misstep. They've got a golden goose with Playstation Plus and they should continue down that road.

i doubt sony will charge for online basic features, PSN+ is the way to go. Y wonder , in case MS adds skype, if they plan some kind of similar approach. PLus multiple console owners that pay for live may have problems if they have to pay more than one subscription just to play online.

Didn't the controller designer himself say, that they overlooked ergonomics for an avangarde design?
I've read that interview as well, but when he (Teiyu Goto) said that they "set aside the ergonomic aspect", if you read the full text you'll see that he meant that they didn't worry about maintaining the ergonomics of the PS2 controller. He goes on to say that people were too attached to the ergonomics of the existing controller:
Teiyu Goto said:
The slightest change to the controller could annoy players and the risk wasn't worth taking. Also PS2 and PS3 provide backwards compatibility; the ergonomics should be the same when you play games from the previous generation but without having to bring out the 'wired' controllers. It is for these reasons that we reverted to the shape of the classic controller."
Having used that Chinese knockoff I can tell you that the ergonomics are great. A number of GAFers also mentioned that they'd used this 3rd party PSX controller and found it to be great as well (I've never used one):

MY DUUUUUUUDE! I have the exact same one, I can pull it out (but my wife is asleep). That controller was so nice to use for fighting games. Dat down forward action.

I bought mine from Meijer.

That controller is good for fighting games? Wow that is something I wouldn't expect, the shape is so odd. Can't think of using it with a 6 button fighter like SSF4.

I wish the new DS4 would have 6 buttons in front like the N64 or Sega Saturn, would love having more buttons on the front. And I think it would benefit a lot of games if they do so.

My insider is saying:
1. They have tried putting the move colored balls on the DS4 but the latest design omits them.
2. The multicolor led thing is more like the controller edge having a led strip and glowing a different color for more immersion.
3. PS4's will come with a camera bundled.

Fixed. Now we can be happy.

1. Good, that would be a retarded decision. Trying to turn the DS3 into a move controller is going to ruin it ergonomically. Same goes for the reverse.
2. Shiny!
3. Good, I expect it to have Kinect like functionality too (even if it doesn't use stereo cameras). Basically an enhancement of some of the old PS-Eye edge detection stuff.

Doesn't the PS3 camera also have a built-in microphone? Or at least the new camera could have this... maybe they don't need to include a headset that way for voice chat... and could still sell their dedicated headsets with better quality for extra profit.

Yeah it does. If they are providing a camera, I hope its a new iteration of PSEye. The camera on original PSEye is insanely low-res.

oh boy...ds4 with a led strip? for more immersion? god, that sounds stupid.

Can't we make a petition somewhere to have the oculus rift to be compatible with the PS4? I'll be down with it.

It would always be up to the developer to support it. There is nothing unique about it from compatibility standpoint. If the developer support it like they could for keyboard etc on PS3.

What are the chances of eye-tracking capabilities?

Tbh i'll be very disappointed if the camera is just there for Eyetoy/Kinect hand-waving nonsense. At no point of time do i want my hands to leave the controller when i'm gaming.

Interesting, thanks. A bundled camera would be expected if position markers are a controller feature, and some were pushing for one in the Ps3 before the costs spiralled.

I think it will probably be USB3 and much better, they were a bit bandwidth limited for high framerates.

The d-pad is gloriously smooth.

Bundled Eyetoy camera [hopefully 720p @ 60/120hz :D] also means integrated out-of-the-box voice chat for everyone.

HD webcam (720p mostly) is quite common nowadays. I think we should get upgrade Eyetoy if not then I can't see it will function another 5 years+

Please no. I prefer not to pay for that shit, if people want an EyeToy they should pay for it seperatly, I don't want PS4 price to be inflated cause of a accessory.

I find those camera/microphone "gadgets" very annoying - and most games using such control methods start to become a chore in my eyes. Give me a DS3 with longer battery and I am happy. No touch, no camera, ... and certainly no color spheres to waggle. I tried it with the Wii and the best games are those who don't rely on that stuff.

Totally agree. I really don't want extras/gimmicks included that I won't use, but will push up the price.
