Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

Just so we're clear, it's not really an objective avoiders ranking. It says TrueSkill, but I'm curious about a couple of things:

1) Was TrueSkill a value you could query via the Reach stats API?

2) The servers for the API were retired almost a year ago, so I assume this list is only as up to date as the Bungie.net unplug at the end of March 2012, right?
Nah, I think it's based on games played, win %, k/d, that kinda stuff. It's HaloTrackers own 'trueskill'. Probably closer to BPR than the real deal.

It kind of seems like discussion is stagnating in here. The population argument keeps coming up, but it's lost it's edge already. We can always look forward to Ozzy jumping in every now and then to start up a few pages of hate, but we really need something new to talk about. Maybe customs in Halo 3 or something? I dunno. Perhaps this should revert back to a speed run and hot girl OT, that was fun.

For the same reason everyone seems to know the Didact's name.
Are you referring to the human characters? If so, why should they not know it? Before Del Rio, Lasky or Palmer refers the Forerunner as the "Didact", Cortana says his name about 10 times throughout the fourth mission. The Elites knew his name from something else, the Covenant battle log confirms it.

Cortana says "It's using a gravity well to pull us inside the surface."

Or at least that's what the subtitles tell me. A reference to the planet.
Yes. Same for me. At least I do understand "it's" always. But I have to be biased because my first run was with subtitles.

Well I always play with subtitles on but I couldn't remember. I had to check a walk-through on YouTube to confirm the dialogue.

And where did Cortana learn his name again?

Storm knew the Didact's name for a while, yes. I don't have a problem with that. Just the human side of things. It was like all of a sudden both MC and Cortana started vomiting out "the Didact!" every 12 seconds. Where did that even come from?

The first time Master Chief says "Didact" the first time was in the fourth(fifth if you count the prologue) mission. And Cortana refers the Didact after the Elite shouted it. So she picked it up from him?

There's an optional little Covenant node on the beginning of Requiem that just keeps repeating an elite saying "DIDACT." That could be it. Or Cortana grabbed it from Requiem's databases, much like she did the name Promethean Knight.

Oh right. That load of crap that they tried to sell in the bulletin? I didn't think anyone would actually buy that.

It's so obvious that they overlooked it during development.

I wouldn't doubt the fact that they overlooked Jul 'Mdama being one of the Elites there, but one of them does say "Didact".

Although it was also probably overlooked, that's how they know the Didact's name.

Or, the more sensible answer is that there is no reason and it's a fucking plot hole.

If we really have to go all Sherlock Holmes on this then clearly 343i has missed the point entirely.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that. They acknowledged it quickly though and didn't just make up a 14 day buy and play though.

They didn't make it up, though. It was right there in the print the entire time. Did they not advertise it well? Most definitely. But they didn't just lie about it after the fact.

At the beginning of "Requiem" there is a device on part of the Covenant wreckage that is repeating "Diiiidaccccttt" over and over. I believe Cortana says something to the effect of the Covenant were sitting outside Requiem repeating this message in an effort to get the planet to open. At this juncture she still does not know who or what the Didact is.

Still, what was the device that scanned them before being sucked into the gravity well and also earlier on the FUD? The Didact and his Cryptum was at the core of Requiem. Was it a sentinel with the same orange/red scanning ability?

When I first saw this gif, I was "Holy shit, they did it. Halo's back!". The gametype BR Slayer implied a return to set starting weapons. The strafe looked so nice, as did the animation. Warhouse appeared to be an instant classic. Then you had Devo's and Domino's writeup, and it appeared 343 had captured lightning in a bottle.
Such a fucking bait and switch.

Ehh, kinda. A lot of Halo 4's faults were crystal clear well before the game came out, so in a way, the only people we have to blame for buying and not liking the game are ourselves. But yeah, it was pretty discouraging to see Halo 4 go from "BR Slayer" to "Infinity Slayer".

I think it was Juices who made the post about having a good "core" gameplay doesn't mean anything, since we don't play the "core", we play the whole game. To me that .gif shows just that core gameplay, the movement, the gunplay, etc. I think that was clearly 343's intent. So we saw that and everyone got excited. And over time as launch approached more and more was layered on top of it. Load outs. Unlocks. Perks. Global ordnance. Etc. For me at least, all that offset what they did with movement and gunplay.

It was a learning process for me. I think 343 really did do a pretty good job with most of the core mechanics. It's everything else that ruined the game for me.

That still doesn't make much sense though. If it was so easy, then why did Bungie ever do it? 6 months isn't a short time. Bungie did promise everyone that they would be supporting Reach as much as the other titles.

Like I said, I would believe that Bungie may have planned a TU if they ever talked about it in any serious way like 343 is now with the TU in February. That never happened though and it was ignored. The lack of support in Reach should be on Bungie's shoulders. 343 released a TU that saved MLG Halo for a limited time, even though it could have been better, it was something.

Also, Bungie released a TU for Halo 2 & 3 a few months post launch. Time is a thing that can't really be ignored on this. If Bungie was just "in talks" about a TU when 343 took over, that's embarrassing in itself.

I just thing most of the blame for the lack of support in Reach needs to go to Bungie, not 343.
I'm saying that Bungie planned to update the game via Megalo but something changed their plans. The whole point of making Megalo was to support the game after launch. When the details of the transition were finalized Bungie was most likely asked not to patch the game and to leave that to 343; it was out of their control because of Microsoft. Bungie never got to talk seriously about patching the game because they couldn't, it was out of their control. It does not make sense to create a tool that lets you make big changes to the game but never actually use the tool.

My point being: Bungie was prevented from supporting Reach in the manner that they had intended to.

Plus, it is fairly obvious that the Reach TU was only for the release of CEA. The title update was just 343 preparing to market a MP component to Halo 1 that included the pistol. In some ways the Reach TU was a test bed for Halo 4 but that is another discussion entirely.

I'm not trying to claim that Bungie can do no wrong. They can. They made Reach. I'm simply stating that Bungie was prepared to support the game but was not allowed to.

They didn't make it up, though. It was right there in the print the entire time. Did they not advertise it well? Most definitely. But they didn't just lie about it after the fact.
It was known that people who played within the first two weeks would get 6 specializations. That "program" had no official name; it was not called "14 Day Buy and Play". That nameless program did not mention anything about DLC maps. When they messed up the DLC they made up the name "14 Day Buy and Play" and spun their mistake to be a part of the earlier program.
Here are the details on the specializations

Here is where they made up the name "14 Day Buy and Play" and claimed that it was all a part of the plan

shoutouts to tortellini for being the best pasta

Back to Nature Spirals White Cheddar.

Cook that up toss the packet in. Stir in milk to make it a little saucy and to the point theres no powder. Toss some fresh cut red peppers and crushed red pepper. Subsitute cracked black if you dont have any.

The rotini is nice because of the spiral shape you get a lot of surface area for the collection of cheese or sauce.

Penne is good too for its thickness which makes it perfect for a chicken alfredo.

Tortellini really only gets points because it can be stuffed. I mean its mad ugly, and its not even really phallic shaped, who wants that? Its like the vagina of the pasta world.

I've really gone off alredo as I've gotten older. I dunno why. I appreciate a fine tomato sauce way more than a white sauce these days.

NEWS: THE HALO BULLETIN: 1.16.13

From Waypoint member "o Nondual o": Any new news about when the File Share system will become available?

Yes! We have updates about two things we’re currently working on in regard to the Halo 4 File Share.

In-game search: We expect the in-game search feature to come online at the end of January (the 29th specifically).

Web File Share: The Halo 4 File Share is coming to the web version of Halo Waypoint in late February.

Personally I hope they reveal some extras like Bungie Pro services but I'm not holding my breath.

Wait... In-game search wasn't already available? The hell. :|

Oh well. Late February is pretty far off, but... better then nothing I guess. Why is this even taking them so long?

I'd celebrate, but this should've been worked out weeks (if not months) ago.

Guess it's good that they've finally got an ETA.

About damn time.

For in-game fileshare i think she means like "Top Downloads," as you can already search by gamertag.

thank god theres a little more functionality coming. i wont be using it since im not renewing live but im sure a lot of people will be happy when this shit finally works. ill believe the part about the web file search when i see it.

So classic Halo 4 is really going to be released as a playlist at the end of February when maps, TU and fileshare come online.

Fixed above, no charge :)
*Crosses fingers Slayer Pro V2 is actually real classic gameplay.

Ozzy, are you seriously letting a game mechanic get the blame for your off-host connection?

That's what you took from all that? Fuck me. You do realise the dev team design/develop for USA AND international players right? You do realise the USA dominance in Halo is almost equal now with international players right? If they'd just implement dedicated servers or host consoles like BF3 they could start to pull back these necessary mechanics to combat online latency. It's not all about balancing the gameplay itself, sometimes they have to balance the delivery network issues.

I posted about development reasoning for international players or mid-high latency players with respect to spawns vs. loadouts, you rebutted and I gave specific examples where it occurs multiple times per game. You choose to what throw a jibe at me about playing from a different country? Oh excuse me for living in another part of the world, jeez.

Damn foreigners ruined Halo

I don't know why people try to compare CoD and its success to Halo 4. I do not like CoD but trying to say they are not a stronger franchise is a joke. Sure, its the same thing year in year out but Activision has treated its cash cow top franchise MUCH better than MS has handled Halo.

Activision even lost its top team and still kept breaking records. MW3 is number 5 under Halo 4. The reason?

They didn't and don't fuck with the core game. They build on it and make improvements to it.

That is why they are number 1 people.

Eh, I pretty sure it has more to do with it being so easy to pick up and play and win. Halo has a larger learning curve while CoD's hardest curve is knowing the map. Treyarch does handle the community better than 343, but that's not why the series is where it's at. It's an easy title that anyone can be good at and to be frank, it is cooler with all of it's weapon modifications. I don't ever want to see that in a Halo game, but you can't deny the game makes you feel badass.
