Ohhh, well, fair enough. I feel similarly when it comes to SPM: the ideas are great, but execution is odd. The only RPGs I've seen you comment on recently were Infinite Space, Radiant Historia, etc. And some of them I've disagreed with you, and others I've agreed on.i like rpgs. paper mario: sticker star is more of an action-adventure game with some very light rpg elements. the closest thing like it is probably okami. i like what it does.
super paper mario is an action-rpg with some bad level design and long periods of nothing but just dialogue. it's disappointing because the 2d/3d idea is fantastic, and it would have been great if that was the focus, but it gets sidelined.
i liked paper mario 64 and really enjoyed the thousand-year door. other rpgs i like tend to be rewarding in that the exploration aspect is pretty cool. terranigma, skies of arcadia, final fantasy xii, xenoblade, and dragon quest viii are examples of those. other games are just fun to play because of their battle system, like valkyria chronicles, valkyrie profile ii, and grandia ii.
I'm sorry.its unforgivable though, some people are putting VN's as their game of the year, ugh
Yes. The total number of games that were released in 2012, minus the length of your ranked list.
Yeah, I'd say 999 has a fairly meaty selection of puzzles to it. Enough that I forgot the solutions to half of them on subsequent playthroughs for all of the endings!I've always been a fierce critic of calling 999 a visual novel.
I tried Episode 1 of TWD and didn't really like its mechanics. It made me nauseous for some reason. I'm sure the narrative ends up being really good and memorable if it's getting a lot of votes.
I'd like to give it another shot, but I'm not sure if it's for me in the long run.
After a little consideration, I wouldn't call it a straight-up VN. You follow narratives and make dialogue choices in VNs while unlocking CGs (the scene drawings).I've always been a fierce critic of calling 999 a visual novel.
TWD taking top spot won't bother me.
Journey however... will be disappointing...
That was some straight-up MacGyver shit.Episode 1 is probably the 'peak' of its mechanics with the outside of the motel segment, sadly.
Eh it's a list on the internet.LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLet's get ready to be booooootheeeeerrrrrrrrrrrred!
By "let's" I don't include me.

I wish I could play VLR but I have a 3DS and don't want to run into the save bug.
Exactly.Eh it's a list on the internet.
Change this to "at least it works largely as intended" for me. Lame ME3 had character import issues, but you can just recreate again and the new look to the game probably meant any character wouldn't look quite right anyway simply because hair/skin would appear to dark or light, and more importantly all my choices were properly retained. But I like TWD enough to put it there, at a low spot admittedly, and if it WINS... well, it's not votes like mine that'll put it there, not unless this is victory through chipping away.I absolutely hate Mass Effect as a series but at least it has gameplay. Fuck.

Less than 1 hour remains
Oh, that's great --Don't worry about it guys. we're going to throw out all the votes for non-games anyway.
*frysquint.jpg*However, we recognize that non-games are becoming a thing nowadays and we are considering making a separate award for non-games to win. We'll call it the "Best of the Non-Games Ghetto Award"
Look forward to it!
Wait, you saying you saw through TWD's choices or 999'sSince we are talking about it, what I also like 999 is that it has pretty neat role-playing/story-branching mechanics. They are very simple, but effective. Kind of like the opposite of TWD where they give you a ton of choices, but collectively they are pretty ineffectual. That's if you see through the illusion anyway. Which I did really early on.
Your "upper echelon" criteria is absurd because then nearly every year is shit.
Post your list already!LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLet's get ready to be booooootheeeeerrrrrrrrrrrred!

Oh, really? Hm. I guess the characterization was just that darn good. I still want to get through it because I can't talk about it if I haven't played it outside of the first episode. Just I dunno when I'm going to do that.Episode 1 is probably the 'peak' of its mechanics with the outside of the motel segment, sadly.
I just took a screenshot of what I'm supposed to remember and kept the photo album App open whenever I needed to look at it. It was more convenient than trying to use the silly memo. Also, sometimes you have to write stuff down, and good luck using the in-game note system with a greasy finger on that imprecise capacitive screen.
Games like Portal 2, Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy, Fallout 3, and Uncharted 2 aren't considered "up there"? They all came out in separate years.
That said, this is all subjective, so there's not really a debate to be had. Was just expressing my opinion, nothing more.
Everyone think TWD is winning? Why?
My money is on the truth. And it wears a fucking scarf.
LOL, this was actually one title I really, really, REALLY wanted to get around to in time for voting. I bought it, it's there in my Steam library. But then Anarchy Reigns came out. :OJust wait for the last minute surge of the true GotY, Mark of the Ninja
juuuuust wait
That was some straight-up MacGyver shit.
(That's a compliment, actually)
TWD taking the top won't bother me. It will just baffle me, and it's going to happen.
Journey taking it won't evoke any kind of reaction at all.
Wait, you saying you saw through TWD's choices or 999's

ART GAMES! *shakes fist*

I'm sorry.
To be fair, mine had puzzles in it. Edit: actually, I'd say it's more of an adventure game than a VN.

Sand-surfing. The whole damn game should've been sand-surfing. Ah well.Journey is just lost on me. I really don't grasp how it was emotional affecting, and I felt that despite the incredibly short length the ending was poorly paced
Yessssssssss. 999 was so full of mind-fucks, it was like that Jackie Chan meme gone Inception.TWD's. I don't know how you would guess 999's craziness.
EAR-GASMIC SOUND
KILLER MULTIPLAYER
AMAZING CAMPAIGN
why would IGN lie, fracas
no idea why 3/4ths of HaloGAF hates that masterpiece of a game
I wanted to get to this before GotY voting phase ended but noooo...Just wait for the last minute surge of the true GotY, Mark of the Ninja
I'm sorry.ahahaha
little (failed) joke there, love - i picked VLR as mine, heh

There is a lot of journey that is lost on me.Journey is just lost on me. I really don't grasp how it was emotional affecting, and I felt that despite the incredibly short length the ending was poorly paced
Is HaloGAF like ZeldaGAF where the new Zelda sucks and the last Zelda becomes the greatest? (I'm obviously excluding Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks in this analogy)We went back to Reach, man.
Fuckin' Reach
We went back to Reach, man.
Fuckin' Reach
even virtue's last reward wasn't really that close to the same level as 999, but it best mimics the ideas that 999 had, especially in working in story and game design. both games wind up having stories that can only be told through video games, and rely on the player understanding traditional video game mechanics to tell the story.
the walking dead wouldn't even be a choose-your-own adventure book. at least those things have multiple endings.
...Holy black Jesus, that's is REALLY sad to hear. Equal mix of tragedy and comedy. Like a midget clown getting hit by a car and making a funny-ass honking noise.
