You know, I don't begrudge anyone their opinion on anything regardless of how out of step it is with my own opinion, but the reflexive drive-by shitpost stuff any time that someone has something positive to say about the art in One Piece gets really annoying.
I mean, this isn't the only topic that inspires this sort of behavior any time that it's brought up, but so many One Piece discussions get derailed by this bullshit and I'd just like to talk about it in AnimeGAF sometimes without people with zero intent to meaningfully contribute to the topic flinging shit from the sidelines all the while. Yes, this mostly means you, Envelope.

The anime is ugly, I agree, but if you guys are talking about Oda's designs, then holy shit. Guy's a genius. There's no single fictional universe in the media with more diversity in terms of characters that still manages to be as consistently good and feel as cohesive as One Piece.

Fair enough. Since Stephenie Meyer's The Host has been picked up for a Hollywood release maybe a Twilight the Anime can slip past the lobby. Though IIRC the graphic novel was illustrated by a Korean which would've made it a manhwa.
Oda has two types of female character designs. The normal ones who are all pretty and have big boobs and the same body, and the ugly ones who all look a little like monsters and have the same long facial height and the same body. It's like a running gag I think. He just doesn't put much effort into women.

I think they generally look different, but at the same time they also... look the same. If you get what I mean. His men are definitely MUCH more varied than his women.
It's certainly cohesive and Oda has talent for sure, but I disagree that they're consistently good on the grounds that many of his stylistic choices such as the shit-eating grins, some of the warped anatomy (though not all, sometimes it's put to good use), the way he "layers" characters by simply combining head of one animal body of another, the lack of range in his facial expressions, all work against him.
If Dresden wants to be all childish about this, I'm not going to stop him!

Liar Game - Season 1
The drama adaptation of the manga. Since I did not read the manga, I can't say if it's really faithful. But dayum, that was pretty intense! Akiyama is such a boss, always coming up with a plan to fuck your mind.
Nao, the main character, always wants to please everybody but since she's so naive she never knows if people are lying or not.
Thankfully Akiyama always saves the day, and the reactions are just priceless.
All the games were quite simple but in the meantime they allowed tons of twists. The Smuggling game was just crazy, leading to a great finale.
The atmosphere was brilliant. The settings of the different games were creepy/classy, with that SAW-wannabe organizer.
Last but not least, the OST. God damn, what a great OST.

"Exact same anatomy" is pretty extreme though. If you want to complain about a bit of same-face syndrome in all the "attractive" females, that's fine, but all the "ugly" ones are pretty different in terms of body type and stuff like that even if there are some very similar features. Hell, Amazon Lily alone throws a bigass wrench in that sentiment.
But yeah, his men are definitely more varied.

The Strong World outfits actually look decent since they resemble normal clothing, not piles of trash. There's the right way to do a rag-tag look, and then there's the Oda way.
Everything there is drawn by Oda.
