That's because Square Enix are making you think it's dead.
Because they are idiots.
And no one is wrong to come to the conclusion that it's cancelled, because the way SE has handled this title is completely idiotic.

I've enjoyed XII, even though it's not in my top 3 FF (VII, VIII and XIII) so I can't really answer your question.
I vaguely recall SE doing something similar with FFXII - that is being silent for months on it before its re-reveal.

I want to say SE has run over themselves, but they've shot themselves in the feet so many times they probably can't do any running at all. So Eidos came along, picked them up and carried them to safety

to be looking forward to versus is like living in hell on earth, you are given hope only to be driven to deeper despair. sure you will get some "footage" this e3, but only for the game to never ever come out.
Let's not pretend Eidos is anything more than Eidos; as if the days of cashing in on the Tomb Raider games with mediocre sequels is a lifetime ago.
Square Enix Japan console department is nothing but a running joke these days.
Square Enix Europe however is force to be reckoned with.
Square Enix Mobile department is making SHIT TON of money.
Square Enix online department is nothing but shamble of ruins.
So overall Square Enix is fine, at least financially.

I will say that the aesthetics and character design in versus still looks better. X has shown almost nothing in that department though. Which makes me worry that it's not gonna be more than an open world grindfrest or have a story that's just light Shonen.

Hasn't it been over 2 years since the last trailer? (January 2011 I believe) I also seem to recall Square making a big to do about that specific trailer as well, wrapping it in some Fabula Nova Crystallis event and branding it as a re-reveal. Yet, we have seen nothing since.
Really really liked that trailer, but Versus 13 still somehow resonates, even after all these years, with me more. I just like the universe they were pitching with Versus.
This does however look amazing. Seriously. It's definitely something that I will play to keep my mind off the 6/7+ years of unfortunate waiting...

It's best to just put Versus out of your mind. I wouldn't be surprised if it was quietly cancelled.
GTAV likely went into development right after GTAIV, and we didn't get a trailer until 2011... And then there was complete silence until October 2012.
Not SE level, but yeah. Information shouldn't have been given out about Versus XIII until it was deep into production. Once it is truly close to release we'll actually start seeing things.
I would. A lot of time and money has been put into Versus XIII and this is the same company that has been working on re-building FFXIV instead of just letting it decay and rot away.

Like Kagari already said, the producer behind it a couple of months ago already confirmed the game will be revealed this year. Probably I add to this, released in Spring 2014 worldwide if LR makes it for December. Unless it has been moved to next-gen but I don't see the reasons to.

This. The trailer for that alone has me expecting to buy a Wii U down the road. Basically, whenever it comes out I'll probably pick it and the console up same day.
But if Versus manages to be out around the same time, I admit it'll cause me to put X on the backburner for a bit.
Has this been announced for the Wii U in North America yet? I honestly don't know as I've tried to avoid much about that game since it has heartbreaker written all over for me. 1 - MMO; 2 - Console MMO; 3 - What I saw of it looked awful; 4 - I love the series and worry it'll leave a bad taste in my mouth; 5 - It might never come here anyways so I'll always be left to wonder.
LR is definitely before December.
Versus will be released, the thing is Square have inadvertently mythologised it by keeping it so secret. I mean really, they should have showed something. Now I feel whatever is eventually released will inevitably be a disappointment. It'll have to be incredible in order to meet expectations.
But not releasing it? That would be the worst move ever.

Oh, yes, I know and I am sure we will see Versus at some point again and it will release at some point. At this point though I am not really sure we are still going to see it on PS3. And it's really anyone's guess as to when it would actually come out after we finally see it again in a re-re-reveal. Right now the game was initially shown in early 2006 (I believe), re-revealed in the first month of 2011, and has now been on radio silence since then. In other words, it has been in some form of development since, likely, 2005. That's over 7 years at this point, the last two of which we have heard nothing. It is somewhat ridiculous.

Reveals don't mean shit IMO. Game took like 6 years to put vs Versus which is now going on for what, 7 years? Not to mention XII was the mainline title they absolutely needed as a company.
I think the trouble SE is facing is that they are currently making enough bank on XIII and it's sequels plus their other ventures, combined with the hype that Versus has gotten from fans that they just don't know what to do with it. They can throw a ton of money at it to make it a critical success, but it's not necessary. It's basically in a state like a potential Chrono sequel at this point
