EA is now sponsoring Top 10 Countdowns on Gametrailers

SLQJc.gif

Yeah... EA needs to sit down their marketing department and have a talk.

Obviously sites are going to be ok with this sort of thing for the money, but its one thing to have a background ad for a game and another to sort of have a video feature that kind of looks like any other video feature on the site, except its sponsored by the publisher. Eh...the whole system just feels kind of grimy but understandable, I guess. Its tacky.

Was hoping for that gif, now replace it with GT's logo with a countdown number.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I won't be surprised to see a news post sponsored by EA.

Final Fantasy XV revealed by Square Enix sponsored by EA.
THQ goes bankrupt and shuts down sponsored by EA.
EA dissolves studio sponsored by EA.

Luckily Gametrailers still produces some quality content (Retrospectives, Pop Fiction, etc) so I can't abandon it completely...but come on.

Any top ten video is a fluff piece already, and they're being honest about the sponsorship.

It's not the goddamn encyclopedia. Top ten lists are the most palatable and rote form of Internet video.

Oh come on people, has the bar really been so low that you just pass it off?

Comic Book Price Guide doesn't have Top Ten Batman's Collector Items, sponsored DC Comics.
Entertainment Weekly doesn't have Top Ten Christopher Nolan's Movies, sponsored by Warner Bros.

I do not believe that GameTrailers is a games editorial site.

That stuff is a side-show, their primary focus has always been pre-release content to increase awareness of upcoming games. That is why people go to GameTrailers, and with this DS3 retrospective they are providing content that is exactly within the very purpose of the site's existence.

plenty of editorial -- and yeah i know some of the stuff is arguable, i'm just saying they are absolutely (in part!) a games editorial site, just like ign or any other games editorial blog.

I guess we choose to see GameTrailers' role differently.

They are on the same level, to me, as Machinima; Mouthpieces of the industry. I don't see this sponsored content as out of the ordinary. I guess that's why I'm not bothered by it.

Well, you're ignoring facts then.

I don't understand what is wrong with the countdown?? It's only for Dead Space.
How is this different than features done by the other sites like The IGN AC III Documentary??

Maybe if it was top 10 horror moments in gaming I would understand but this is "normal" I guess.

Not gonna watch since I still haven't played 2, but is GT labeling it as something they created internally of their own volition or marking as clearly sponsored content?

In any case, blurring of the line between advertorial and editorial can't be good for anyone except corporations.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
Why hasn't anyone actually made that hat for Geoff? I bet he'd actually get a kick out of it.

So it's a top ten countdown about Dead Space sponsored by the game that the video was made for.

I don't see the problem here. Is it because people hate EA that you feel disgusted by this?

I don't see a problem. This is obviously a topically relevant ad for a game that comes out next week. Of course EA paid for it, that's how advertising works.

And what is a EA game makes number 1 or takes 3 of the top 10 spots etc?

Slippery slope and all that...

More like GT needs to sit down with its marketing team and have talk.

Marketing and ad money is their only revenue. A bucket of money comes by and hell yeah they do this.

As far as EA's marketing - They needs to get this trilogy shit figured out and stop making changes to the third games and stop talking about what a great fucking time it is to get into the series.

You guys know GT has had a myriad of sponsors over the years right? This means nothing.

I have seen them trash games while an ad for the very same game was positioned above the video. GT might be one of the few outlets whose integrity I don't question...

HOWEVER, Shane said he wasn't happy with the gameplan for GT down the road and left for that reason. There might be some unethical stuff down the road but this definitely isn't an instance of unethical practices. This is just advertising.

Don't know if its unethical because I don't believe they are journalists but it is stupid. Why would I want to watch this? A top ten list about something sponsored by that thing doesn't instill in me confidence. It's tacky.
You would want to watch it because the actual video is exactly what it claims to be, a ranked list of the ten most intense moments of the two Dead Space games.

It is no less legitimate than if anyone else where to make a thread here on GAF listing their 10 most intense moments. There's no corporate shill here in the actual content, it's just some guy's opinion of a bunch of cool moments in the Dead Space games.

And their #1 was even correct, at that.

I'm not ignoring anything, rather merely downplaying the relevance of editorials on a site primarily designed to market and advertise.
I think you're ignoring how gametrailers is actually perceived by most people.

It's nice that you (and I) can see they're mostly a marketing site and use token editorials to increase their credibility to more effectively sell those ads, but that's not how most people see them, I wager.

bish gets all the credit :)

When that poster is being paid by the publisher they would be called a viral marketer and banned.

I would be more upset if GT made this top 10 list and never disclosed that they were paid by EA to make the list.

The fact that they are upfront about it means it's less controversial than the OP is making it out to be

Much a-dew about nothing.

Its quite transparent what they're doing here.

I don't really have an issue with it
(although I'm bargain binning DS3 due to the microtransacation highjink bullshit)

I meant the quality of the content, not if it literally happened.

The actual top 10 list, which is barely even being discussed, is exactly what you would expect to see from ANYONE discussing the game. My entire point is that the actual quality and integrity of the video is not in any way affected by the corporate sponsorship.

Has anyone actually watched it?

Remember what Shane Satterfield said when he left the site.

Things are difficult for gaming web sites these days, and GameTrailers is no different. GT will be changing in the comings months, and after giving it a hard look, it’s not a perfect fit for me.
Sounds like this could be the start of what he was talking about.

9+ score for DS3 incoming.

Dead Space 1 and 2 were both in the 9's for me.

I have high expectations for DS3, as well. If it places that highly it will have met my expectations. I will not automatically assume they were paid off because a developer with a track record of making amazing games makes another amazing game and they get praised for it.

Or, hypothetically still, they do manage to fuck it up. If there is a radical disparity in review scores between GT compared to the Metacritic average, then we can start calling their integrity into deep question. We'll see.

I wonder what the "difficult" part could be referring to?

I remember a Destructoid article where a publisher tried to apply pressure on them because they let Jim review certain games.

I agree, I watched it and I actually agree with most of the moments in the top 10 and I'm sure people are just jumping into conclusions by reading the slightly misleading title.
