Yeah, I could certainly see that. There is the tendency to marry your opinions on what is a good character, alongside whether or not you actually like them. Which is understandable, though it can be misrepresentative, especially when you have those that are designed against this idea. I get the impression that Shinji is the latter.

Holy fuck, I'm glad I ran through this tonight. I can certainly appreciate why some might prefer this to Gunbuster. It actually mirrored my experience with Gunbuster as with that I was underwhelmed initially given how hyped it was only to be shown how I should have never doubted as the stakes and drama rose accordingly.

I'm rather hesitant to even compare the two despite the similarities as I think this is something of an excellent complementary work. I'd give Gunbuster a slight edge on it though and rank it out as Gunbuster > Diebuster >>>>>

You've articulated pretty much how I feel about Diebuster as it relates to Gunbuster. I find both works amazing on their own merits. And yep, that last scene is one of my favorites ever .

Let's also not forget that it is getting a rerelease in May thanks to Discotek.

Shinji, why is that I find you so inherently unlikeable? Admittedly, his reasons for being despondent are understandable (having basically been conscripted to pilot a gigantic death-machine), though he goes about it in such a maudlin way, I still found difficult to sympathize. Which extends to the closing moments of the battle, though it's clear to see why he breaks at this point, it's still pretty dumb when you consider the overall insignificance of the event.

I can usually forgive instances of plot-armour, but this just bugged me for whatever reason.

It may be a little too early for me to be casting dispersions on any one character, but yeah, don't like him.

As a side-note, I also find it odd when giant mechs wield up-scaled versions of conventional weaponry. But I admit that this is probably something of an irrational hatred, because I'm aware that people really dig like sort of details.

Speaking of intolerable leads...as much as I like Eva I really dislike Shinji. Outside of DTL I can't think of anyone who does like him.

Edit: I guess there are a couple others who like him here
