Target Earth is tough as nails. It's also a really great Genesis game that people overlook because of its box art.

One of my favorite (Mega Drive
...what's a Genesis???
) games of all time - and one of the most underappreciated games of all time:

Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master

Beautiful, diversified, challenging...this game is just amazing! Still one of the best looking games of the 16 bit era!

Just discovered this game in the Sega Megadrive Collections game on ps3, it's absolutely beautiful. I grew up on a MD2 and I can't believe how many gens I have missed on it. This game is absolutely ace.

bought myself an s-video modded genesis model 1 with sega-cd, power converter and a ton of games for my birthday last week! feels good, man.

now to just grab an arcade power stick (god i loved that thing) and keep an eye out for my list of games on the cheap, hopefully in a lot but several of them only show up on ebay by themselves. speaking of, from the SHMUP category, i had no idea MUSHA went for as much as it did! shit's heartbreaking; in the day, my friend's dad was huge on that genre and i'd play the shit out of that and some thunder force.
always kinda weird to me that this system was such a home to the genre's classics, yet somehow R-type got left out, despite being on the master system.

The 13 Mega CD games I bought for 1,500 yen (shipped) showed up today! All of the CDs are in superb condition (not a scratch on them!) and they all include the spine cards, very nice. (not sure why the MK one is stuck onto the cd case with some adhesive...)

Anyway, some of them don't look very good, but the 3 games I wanted from this lot; Cosmic Fantasy Stories, Lunar: SS, and Urusei Yatsura (also made by Game Arts!), are nice and the others were just a nice bonus I can try out.

I'd like to get Thunder Force IV I'm still debating on whether or not to pick up TFIV on the Mega Drive. I have the Thunder Force Gold Pack 1 for the Saturn, which has TFII MD and TFIII. The MD TFIV game would be cheaper, but if I went for the TF Gold Pack 2 on the Saturn I would get TFIV and TF AC.

The Saturn RGB cable and the Selecty21 that I ordered also arrived today!

I just bought a PAL Sega Megadrive Model 1 High Definition Graphics with switchless region mod, 4 controllers and a RGB cable for less than €50 from Marktplaats (kinda like a Dutch version of Craigslist). I never owned a Sega MD, any suggestions on what games I should get? Games can be from any region and has to be affordable. I'm definitely going to pick up Sonic 1/2/3/&Knuckles and Alien Soldier at some point (Alien Soldier will most likely be a repro because I cannot afford the ridiculous prices of a legitimate cart).

Don't bother looking for a modded Sega Saturn. Instead just pick up an Action Replay Plus cartridge which has region switching, 1-4MB RAM expansion for some of the Capcom fighters and other games that use the extra RAM, and it also has game save storage too.

You could buy one here:

OR find one on Ebay.

They are definitely a good investment.

ah, nice! thanks man, that'll prolly be my next project.
some of the cult classics are stupid-expensive, though. considering how few of them ever got ported, i seriously don't judge anyone playing backups of them at this point...i wish more games past Guardian Heroes & NiGHTS saw re-releases, but i guess that's for another thread.

Oh the same game! Is it good? I've never heard of it before. I should try it out sometime. I just tried out a few games and they worked great. It's weird playing Lunar SS though as I'm so used to the Saturn version(s).
Oh, My pack also had 2 copies of Thunderstorm FX, but I only showed one in the picture for obvious reasons.

If you are just looking to play imported games, then that Action Replay 4M Plus shown above is great for that. I've had mine since 1997/1998, I forgot exactly when, but yeah it still works fine. I don't use it much anymore as my current Saturn is a JP model (I used it a lot with my old US Saturn), but it's good for backing up save data.

Wow... I had no idea that M.U.S.H.A had appreciated in value so much. I got mine for like $9.99 years ago. It's complete, so looks like a minimum of $200 today. Insanity.

I really need to value my entire games collection sometime...

Have you not posted on any retro forums in, like, five years? LOL. I mean, seriously, it's been the talk of the town for a while. :)

I do not like that CD games are region protected. I've got a copy of JPN Fatal Fury Special that I cannot play.

Well, seeing as you actually own it, surely there's a way of making a backup ROM image, tweaking the region encoding, and burning a copy that'd work in a US Sega CD or EU Mega CD? I know this is possible for the Saturn (at least, a Saturn that can read backups, either via modding or the swap trick). Since you'd be the one providing the source material, the one doing all the backups and modifications, and the only one intended to get the end product, I don't think this violates any laws.

Exactly the same story for me, but I thought I saw some on ebay for $50 not too long ago.

Actually... I probably haven't. :)

I used to be on Neo-Geo.com regularly, but when it got locked down at work I just kind of lost touch.

NeoGAF has become my home for game discussion.

Also, I have noticed that when I start talking about retro games on retro forums, the stores that carry them near me suddenly don't have what I'm pining for anymore. I hate to be secretive about that kind of thing, but for whatever reason where I live there are a lot of people who read videogame forums and go buy the shit I want when I post about it!

M.U.S.H.A is one of my all time favorite shooters. I bought it from Electronics Boutique back in 1991 or so and still have it.

I may need to shove it on eBay. Crazy.

Yeah, I did a bit of reading on the matter, but I'm too lazy to do that kind of thing. I just want it to work, like the Turbo Duo. =)

Was there any commotion over it back in the day? It's such a big thing now, were people talking about it at all in 1991, was it super obscure, etc?

Isn't Musha Aleste available on Wii VC, anyway? If so, it's crazy that a game could be so readily available and still command such prices.

It always had great reviews in the day and as a fan of the genre (And the Genesis had a lot of shooters), I snatched it up. I do recall it being a display copy and last in stock however. I think I paid $19.99 for it at the time.

As with all my Genesis carts (Outside some preowns from Funcoland), I have the box, cart and manual.

It was known as a very good shooter and the print run was small because it was one shooter among many on Genesis at the time. The Genesis was overwhelmed with shooters at that time, to the point that some got left in Japan only because there were so many available already.

I bought mine after reading about it in Gamefan. Got it used.

One game I haven't heard mention of yet is Taz-Mania. It's not the greatest game - the hit detection is pretty spotty - but I remember being pretty impressed at the graphics and animation. I was a big fan of the Taz character when I was younger so this was a must-get.

It really hasn't aged well!

Still, you're right, it was one of those games that younger me played to the end just because of the character.

Yeah, I don't like that either. My Mega Drive and Mega CD are both JP models, so I can play all the games I bought just fine. I can play Genesis games on it as well since the MD has a region mod, but that still won't let me play Sega CD games... -_-

The Sega CD/Mega CD doesn't have any copyright protection, so you can play burned games if the region lock is holding you back. I'd still rather use the real game instead having to rip it/change the region/ burn it to a cdr...
It is definitely a hassle, which is why I haven't bought any Sega CD games. On the other hand, I am planning on picking up a few Genesis games.

I just found this thread, and i dig all the cool atuff people are doing to their consoles. Im a collector now, started last year, and im not doing too shabby. I think the best surprise so far was a little beat em up called Mystical Fighter. Its sort of generic, but my friend and i played it and just had a lot of fun with it.

Bragging on good deal, i got a prisitne, complete 32x copy of Pitfall for 10 bucks, because for some reason, that game is really expensive

Agreed. It's one of those games that I bought because of the cover. I loved the big sprites and the main character of course. It probably wouldn't be considered a good game today, but I played it a lot as a kid.

I recently noticed that it's not with the other games of my collection. I wonder where I put it...

Had nice graphics and animation and some neat concepts. But the level design was kind of disjointed and hurt the gameplay IMO.

There was from the dedicated Sega fan message boards going all the way back to the early 2000's or so. I was a part of some of those message boards way back in the day, and this game would always come up as the "holy grail of Genesis Shmups" in discussions. But the selling price on Ebay back then wasn't insane like it is now.

I'm actually also shocked to see Crusader of Centy command insanely high prices now. Even a few years ago, this game didn't get that much attention from Sega fan groups. But it seems like the popularity of Atlus name has driven the price up pretty high. Earlier in this thread somebody posted an Ebay link to a copy with no case, no instruction book with a torn label for like $50.00. I have a copy of this game that I purchased second hand for like $10.00 way back in 1996 or 1997, and sometimes it makes me wonder if I should put mine up on Ebay.

Snatcher for the Sega CD is another one in my collection that I bought way back in 1996 or so for about $15.00. I purchased it based on a glowing review from Game Fan magazine, not really knowing anything about the game at the time or who made it (other than Konami). Then a few years later Metal Gear Solid gets released and Hideo Kojima starts to become a well known name in gaming circles; and this game goes up in price on Ebay over the other Sega CD titles. Then after the release of Metal Gear Solid 2, 3 and 4, the game really started to command for a lot of money on Ebay. I wouldn't have guessed that it would be a collectors item back then. But then again, that went for a lot of the games I bought.

I haven't read through this obviously glorious thread so I'll go ahead and mention Mystic Defender as one of the best--and most overlooked--action platformers of the 16bit era. It was my first Genesis game and will forever hold a special place in my gaming heart. I was lucky enough to have snagged the uncensored version as well (which reminds me I was also fortunate to have played Revenge Of Shinobi with Spidey/Batman etc.)

Did they actually release a censored version of Mystic Defender? That I didn't know. I wouldn't have thought it sold enough copies to warrant a re-release.

Games like this, platformers absolutely jam-packed with blind jumps... ugh, I hate that stuff. And Taz-Mania is basically endless blind jumps. Other platformers like Global Gladiators also have way too many of them... any game with blind jumps and death pits is NOT something I enjoy playing!

Great thread. I loved me my genesis and it always makes me feel bad that it gets shortchanged, it was right up there with the SNES.

ALso, why has there been no Bloodlines discussion? Amazing soundtrack, amazing graphics, and one hell of a great Castlevania game. Not to mention Michiru Yamane's first CV work. SO GOOD!!!

Anyhow, does anyone know how the X'eye's audio compares to the HDG Genesis? I have (I beleive) the very first US model, though it's in storage right now, and the only thing stopping me from pulling it out is that my Sega CD would overheat after about 40 minutes to 1 hour of play (it's a model 1) I also have an X'eye, and I love the thing to death, but I can't find any info on its audio chip and how it compares. Also, does anyone have any ideas on where I could get a replacement AC adapter for the thing?

I love my Genesis! Sports and RPGs were all I played back then. Every year I have a Super Bowl party and one of the highlights is we having a single elimination random team NHLPA 93 tourney!

Top 5

Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun
Dungeons & Dragons: Eye of the Beholder (Sega CD)
Phantasy Star IV
NHLPA 93
NHL 94 (Sega CD)

man, if any of you MUSHA kids ever feel like letting it go on a fair price & giving it a good home, lemme know! i promise i wont cash it out on ebay, that game is just a classic & i miss playing it.

also, about Taz: it's like Ren & Stimpy for me, as the art style is great & does much to capture what it's going for, but unless you're currently enamored with the franchise, it's just not a good game. Taz had some weak level design as it went along, and the mine cart level is something i might as well call "grad school" cause i habitually quit on it

that's a good question, ive read about the other combo systems but not that one - any takers? a few of you've said nothing matches the model 1 gennys, wondering if this holds up somehow

All this talk of the Altese games just makes me think of how badass Lords Of Thunder is. I still feel its my favorite shooter between the Genesis/Sega CD. The music alone makes it worthwhile. It just has a lot of nice stuff that separated it from other games in the genre.

One of my fave Genesis shmups:

Air_Buster.jpg

Also in the arcade and on HuCard but the Genesis version is what I played... my neighbor owned a copy. I loved the 2P simultaneous play, being a huge fan of Life Force (the game that got me into shmups). The game is pretty easy and not very long (compared to the majority of shooters around that time) but has some great music, fast action and some cool level design (like a fast-paced move through tight corridors similar to parts of Gradius 3).

Just ordered the scart and Scart to YUV adapter for my Model 1 Asian MD. Hoping it works well. Also I can vouch for the simplicity of installing a language switch on a Model 1, it was my first soldering project and its about 6 years strong.. I just need to mount it somewhere if I ever want to get a Mega CD. I also removed the cart lock.
