PS4 controller: touchpad + share button + dualshock

Getting back to getting rid of stuff on the controller, I'd really like to see Sony get rid of the right analog stick. If you use a touch pad in its place, then you'd have the precision of a mouse on a controller, and players really wouldn't (or, at least, shouldn't) miss the right analog stick. If they want to play PlayStation 3 games on PlayStation 4, then let them purchase new versions that replace the right analog stick functionality with touch pad functionality.

I really hope Sony does more than just reverse the positions of the d-pad and left analog stick. The right stick in your mock-up looks like it'd make the touch pad really awkward to use. Honestly, assuming that Sony isn't making PlayStation 3 backwards-compatibility a priority with PlayStation 4, I'd like to see Sony completely rethink its controller design. I like the idea of Sony decreasing the number of buttons on the controller, but I don't feel that a touch pad in the center of the controller is the answer.

That said, I do feel that getting rid of the Select (or Back, on Xbox 360) and Start buttons make sense, because both of those buttons tend to do things other than select or start things. I'd like to see buttons with LED's that allowed the buttons to be labeled with their functions on a software level.

nope

My predictions on the Share button:

Click once for instant screenshot. Doesn't interfere with game.

Click and hold for video recording. You can record up to 15 minutes. Long sessions will automatically be split into increments of 15 minutes plus the remaining time that is less than 15.

Live streaming can be initiated and terminated from the main menu or in game XMB.

it sounds like the video is always on... and then if you want to share it; you click share. and then you can go in and chose to share a pic or video from the last 15 minutes.

How do you play games where the primary controls are the left stick and the face buttons? Your thumbs being asymmetrical doesn't prevent you from playing I assume?

Your thumbs should fall naturally on the primary controls when you pick the controller up. The Dualshock is still the same design as the old Dual Analog controller, which was a PS1 controller with analogue sticks tacked on to it. Back in those days, most games used the D-pad as the primary controls still, so it was OK. People who have only played on Playstations are used to it out of tradition, but that doesn't make it a good design.

Either the 360 pad or the Wii-U Pro pad are the best designs in terms of stick/button layouts.

I remember a lot of games analog as the primary controller too, after owning both controllers for a while both feel natural.

Everyone is different of course, but I always find the discussion of how the dualshock is uncomfortable pretty interesting. I have fairly large hands myself and yet i still think the dualshock to be the most comfy to hold for extended periods, but that could be because its been my go to controller since the original. I prefer the stick placement, and d pad of the dualshock to the 360 pad quite abit.

Im just glad Sony did not go the nintendo route with that massive monstrosity, so being screenless is not important to me. The best news about this for me so far is that they seem to be keeping the base design of the dualshock, and adding OS level screenshot/video capture options which i have wantex forever in a console.

For those of you who hate the dualshock, im really curious how the hell your holding it for it to be that uncomfortable, the one thing i think could use some work is the triggers.

With the touch pad, i don't think we'll see gesture based control. It's probably going to be like the vita where tapping an area in the left or right area is like pressing start or select. And if it clicks down, then we have our share/ ps button.

Share is seperate but probably doubles as the PS button. If they reserve clicking the pad for start/select, they can leave the unclicked pad for random gestures depending on game. It still means you'd have to touch the pad and potentially intefere with the game controls just to pause it, which seems a bit weird.

same size? eurgh. Sony, you made a great controller once. The Dual Analogue. Remember that? Longer grips? Concave stick grips?

As if using the Dual Shock 3 wasn't bad enough, it feels even worse after experiencing the comfort of the Wii U's Pro Controllor. It doesn't just look like a refined 360 controller, it feels like one too.

I'll never forget the day I heard they'd dropped the boomerang controller. I was really happy until I realized what they were going with in its place. Put the analogue sticks in the primary positions. Both of them! Fix your ergonomics. No convex triggers. Further travel on them too, please.

Then stick on whatever crazy other features you want.

I wont mind symmetrical sticks, as long as both are moved little more to the sides and up. Even 360 controllers right stick is too low and too much on the left, feels like i have to stretch my thumb to reach it, where as my left thumb just naturally falls on the higher left stick

Capture hardware made obsolete?

Yes.

"A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet."

YES! So many awesome moments I've had, especially in multiplayer games, I'd love to share.

But what the hell, I want my Start and Select buttons! I do not want those to be touch based. Same size? They should have made it bigger/redesigned and found a way to fit the touchpad below the analog sticks... Something like this:

That is a damn good idea.. The textpad on the 360 controller fits great there.

Interesting new controller ideas. But isn't Sony screwing themselves? Everyone knows third parties don't port games to non-standard controllers.

It looks like to be a standard controller with the share button and touchpad replacing Start Select, ect. Nothing like WiiU.

There is a possibility of me going PS4 only next gen, but if they go with the ancient dual shock design again it is pretty much a deal breaker.

For the love of God, please use the dpad from the Vita. It is so damn good.

Also, please make the controller bigger.

Do you guys mean the design of the vita d-pad or the size of it?

I think it is too small. A bigger version of that would be cool.

ANd yea, they should make the DS4 bigger too I think.

The standard does evolve with time. Biometric controllers are going to become the standard with both Valve and Sony going for it.

They should make the move 2 controller and ds4 controller all one thing. Add a microphone port on it. And bundle it. That way devs can take use of every feature.

Ugh i will never dressed the offset sticks argument, it's so old and annoying. I use both controllers, they are fine, the offset one looks a bit weird but that's about all.

I wonder how many folks typing "touch pads are useless and gimmicky" actually used a touchpad on their laptops to navigate the mouse to the "post reply" button...

Person X says, that asymetrical layout is better.

Person Y says, that symetrical layout is better.

Who is right? No idea, but I know one thing - meltdowns are going to be amazing. Either way.

Its annoying how resistance to new things always comes from the enthusiast crowd. Fucking hell people

Great things I'm hearing about ps4 but I am slighly worried that the touchpads on the DS4 will make it look retarded.

I think many are misreading the use of the touch pad. It may only be useful in a creation/editing software or game. For example resizing objects in a LBP game or cropping a photo in the photo editor. Also may find a use in the os in some fashion and act as a mouse pad for the browser. Think more outside of gaming for its use.

The share button sounds awesome and is probably the front touch pad when clicked.

The constant recording of 15 of gameplay sounds amazing. There has been many times where something awesome happens while playing a game but since I dont record while I play I loose it and cant recreate the moments all the time.
