PS4 controller: touchpad + share button + dualshock

Symmetric analog for life. I'm not re-learning shit. I've been used to it since PS1 and anything else just does not feel right in my hands. Sony would be stupid to go assymetric after all this time and it would piss off a good ton of people. Let third party controllers take care of that market. Don't do it Sony. ~_~

It looks like to be a standard controller with the share button and touchpad replacing Start Select, ect. Nothing like WiiU.

The Game Pad is literally nothing but a Dual Shock with a touchscreen in the middle, and yet we've already heard, "Ya' know, we would but the controller offers so many possibilities that we'd want to fully explore," several times.

Share button seems really gimmicky. Kind of remind me of the "Internet" button on my old Ericsson T65. The actual share functionality is potentially awesome though.

I was fucking right!!!!!

I think I'm the only one who finds the one on the left absolutely abysmal. Lol, It looks so dumb and heavy/uncomfortable. Like the orginal xbox controller.

What the hell are they thinking especially after the vita? Touchscreens are good because you can intuitively touch whatever is on the screen. Touch pads on a controller separate from the screen will almost always be implemented as a shittier but more expensive button or stick.

...

It takes two minutes to adjust. And this is coming from someone who has used all of sony's controllers and decided to get a 360 controller to play PES on PC back in 2007.

I hope it at least has the Vita d-pad, but bigger, that thing is probably one of the best I've used.

Same here, PlayStations have always been my console of preference but I don't have a problem using the 360 controllers analog sticks, the only things I really dislike is the ass d-pad and the plasticy feel of the buttons, otherwise the only actual problem is when I forget what buttons are what on the 360 pad when something like "X" comes up on the screen, lol.

I hope it is not true. The DS needs a complete over haul IMO. It needs the left stick where the 360 has it. If there is no increase in size the touch pad be worthless for games since have to change hand position to use it to avoid the sticks. Even making it a bit wider to make the sticks further appart would be a big improvement. I am getting a PS4 day 1 if possible but the controller sounds blah.

Sixaxis was a gimmick that was under-utilized because it just wasn't practical in that context.
Seems like the same with this touchpad.

I wish they would realize that they don't need these gimmicks just to be different.

Reverse the d pad with the analog stick and you're done. I'd be happy with that.

That split second it took to "learn" asymmetric sticks was a real doozy.

So how big will the meltdowns be if SCE changes the analog stick placement to be asymmetric like on the 360?

Personally, I'd be willing to start a crusade.

An internet crusade

I just want concave triggers and stick grips. The convex junk is the only major thing I can't stand about the DS3.

If they don't fix the trigger buttons I might pass on the system. I find them unbearable with games that require you to use them in a regularly.

Fuck concave triggers. Gas pedal my friend it should be gas pedal.

I think people especially on GAF should focus on this:

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

Finally as standard capture hardware in place. Free brag videos for us. Free marketing for Sony. WIN-WIN situation and ton of gifs.

touchpad wouldnt be (just) for games... it will be much easier to surf the web with it for instance.

I think the top one will be close; with a touchpad+share button and non of that hot/cold filament nonsense or oled (LOL)

People really think the dualshock is small? Color me surprised, I have a big hand and it fits just fine in the controller honestly. I have no problems with either of the controlers tbh, so if they go for a 360 style I will be ok too, but yeah at this point this is the last thing Im really anxious to know about, the rest is way more important, just to know that they arent going for something simlar to that monstruosity of a controler that is the WiiU tablet is good news already.

Reading opinions on the DualShock 3 here on GAF always makes me sad. I like the d-pad and left analog where they are, and I do not at all want concave tops on the analog sticks.

Don't make the PlayStation controller the Xbox controller! We have two choices out there, and that's nice!

Who cares if the sticks are symmetrical or asymmetrical. Both ways are GREAT.

It is not the natural position for your left thumb on the DS is where the Dpad is. The left stick needs to be in that natural position. I am much less effective in many games with the DS vs the 360 control pad.

Well if they don't do something new with the controller, people would just use their PS3 controllers. Controller sales are big money.

wassup with all these designs? its going to look like this basically I would think. Although I do like that black design one.

My mockup ended up being pretty close to what's described in the article. I think the touchpad should work out great for OS navigation stuff.

Am i the only one who thinks that the touch pads purpose is more for the share/ OS functions then it is for gameplay. I really dont see an issue with replacing the start, and select buttons as the select button is basically worthless anyway, its almost exclusively used to access menus which can easily be handled by the start button which also is used for....menus.

So touch the pad to pause, hold to go into the menus during gameplay. Then when in the ps4 OS you can then use the pad to swipe menus, navigate your browser, edit pictures or screenshots. The touch pad would have much more functionality, and use then start and select currently do.

Then the right stick is not in the natural position either. Any way you put them, SOMETHING is not going to be in the natural position. I can't believe anybody has a problem either way, but I guess that's just me.
