Symmetrical stick placement please and keep the current face buttons.

In fact just make the current DS3 a bit bigger, add a share button, improve the triggers and we're golden.

I hope the shape gets a bit more ergonomic.
It would be nice to get buttons where the tip of the middle fingers rest underneath the controller similar to SCUF modded controllers.
Touch pad in the center probably means the split controller idea is not happening. :(
If the touch pad is multi touch, it might be nice for RTS games.

Sony, if you totally rip off Miiverse but include video sharing, I promise to buy your system because that sounds rad. Bonus points for updating avatars into something not hideous.

Miiverse with Sackboys and Sackgirls please.

They already had a sort of de-evolved version of Mii-verse on the Vita, where every game has activities your friends do in the live area, and you can comment and like posts. So it could happen.

Yeah, LiveAreas are cool but pretty basic on the Vita (which is fine for a handheld). PS4 should make LiveAreas actual interactive places to run around in and meet people to play the games with, and share content (basically, a streamlined and not ugly as sin PS Home).

Then the right stick is not in the natural position either. Any way you put them, SOMETHING is not going to be in the natural position. I can't believe anybody has a problem either way, but I guess that's just me.

Atleast right sicks are in that spot for a good reason for the face buttons that are used in every game. The Dpad is hardly used these days and no reason for it to have the prime time spot on the controller.

They can keep the layout, I just really hope they make the general shape like the 360/pro controller. You know if Nintendo's copying someones design it's pretty good.

I'd like to see concave sticks like this:

I had a chance to play with something like that with the mad catz interchangeable controller and you know what analogs i always ended up using?

The play station analogs. I like the 360 controller but once i was able to try out all of the options out there, i found i like the play station analogs better.

Knowing Sony, that Share button and all those features will probably up to the developer...so of course the developer will ignore it/restrict it, so the Share button will be more or less useless.

/sigh

That is because the buttons are the main source of input on the right side, or at least the input that needs the most thumb dexterity.

So um Duelshock 4 basically. Sigh...I really wish Sony would just truly redesign the damn controller. Oh well I've lived with it for 3 generations now I'm sure a can a forth assuming that's my choice next gen.

I'm only going with one other console next gen to go with my WII U.

Except it seems to work Aok for the Vita... If its built into the OS at launch developers should not have to do anything, though I could see some publishers restricting it, but again that would probably add work for the sake of it.

It's similar in size. It could very much be a different form factor. I'm actually expecting something a bit flatter and tablet-like than the typical handle design since it has a touch pad. Maybe something closer to the Vita than the traditional game controller.

For better or worse, the DualShock design is rather iconic. Changing it too much, shape wise, might not be the best idea for brand recognition purposes. Thus the photoshops that take the DualShock 3 and delete the middle buttons and replace them with a touchpad seem the most likely. Plus hopefully replacing the DS3 d-pad with the Vita's d-pad. Basically this, minus the hot-cold filaments and screen (as multiple others have said):

I think the top one will be close; with a touchpad+share button and non of that hot/cold filament nonsense or oled (LOL)

The only thing from the Vita I want on the DS4 is the Dpad but larger. If it is remotely laid out like the Vita I am out. The vita has about the worst ergonomics of any device I have ever used. I love my Vita but it is a pain to have to use grips to play any game that involves the sticks and top buttons.

Yeah, maybe something easier to hold for extended play time than the Vita. I'm very much okay with them sticking with the classic DualShock design though. It's iconic, I prefer it, and I'm used to it after 3 generations.

I hope they make the DS4 with the ability to swap the left thumbstick and dpad. Make it modular so that those of us who don't want symmetrical thumbsticks don't have to suffer.

I play zero multi-platform games on the PS3 because I prefer the 360 controller.

*Glances at thread title* YAY! I don't care if they are copying Nintendo. (lol) I want a screen for off tv play for PS4!

*Rereads thread title and thread*

oh...its just a touch pad. Thats what I get at glancing at things. :/

Well if this is true, then you can possibly record and share videos as a OS feature then that will be awesome. Hope thats true.

From my experience modular controller have a lot of bugs and just are not worth it.

Hearing that Sony might have a Miiverse like environment is great because hopefully it will push Nintendo to improve theirs.

I'm also glad they aren't going with a touch screen if this rumor is true. Wii U's gamepad is nifty at first, but there isn't much they are doing with it at the moment...

All this sharing stuff is ok, but it just seems like something to distract people from the fact that the game software itself is not getting enough focus on ANY platform.

That's disappointing. I've never experienced one before but it just seems like a potential solution that could please everyone. However, I see how anything additional functionality presents new problems and ability to break.

What are the odds of them releasing different models with different thumbstick orientations?

Hmm I would want the L2/R2 to be more akin to the N64 back trigger; in the back and with 2 triggers of course. I can't help but to think that's the ideal spot for a trigger.

It's not completely without precedent to have region specific controllers.

With the original xbox most of the world got the duke controller while japan got a much smaller controller.

As a vita and ps3 owner.

All this news means if I ever get a ps 4 it will be for a few exclusives only years after launch.

The back touch pad on the vita is awful in terms of concept, ergonomics, and in execution. A totally negative feature of the system.

Also really the awful tiny dual shock with its basically useless triggers and loose fucked up insanely convex sticks? No thanks X a million.

Such bummer news

I use my tablet as a mouse for the PS3 and it works great, if they can make this touchpad work like that it would be a nice addition.

I can't think of any use for games outside of gimmicks though.

They haven't said anything about the triggers. Those are make or break for me at this point. I won't buy a PS4 with the same triggers. I can live with the analog sticks though.

How are you relating sharing software footage to no focus on software support? @_@ But anyway, its still early man, come on. Give them time.

All I ask is that they make the triggers more concave, and make the grips slightly more ergonomic. *Maybe* widen the controller by half an inch so my thumbs are so damn close to each other.

The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

So Sony's "innovation" is adding a physical button to a feature both consoles will have?

Really with the technology and features being so similar between the two why do we need two machines here?

I like the sound of 15 minute recording, but I wonder at what resolution it'll record at. Ideally I'd want at least 720p, but I realise that might be an unrealistic expectation :/

Be prepared for a lot of questionable youtube gaming content next gen.

First party software and online features. Not everyone wants a Kinect-heavy focus and Xbox Live Gold.

Implementations of those functions can be wildly different. Also exclusives.

regarding concave triggers, I wouldn't mind if they just made the DS4 to have similar triggers to the Move controller.

The sticks are a deal breaker for me. Convex sticks are nothing but insane and sticks that loose make every game feel floaty and poorly controlling.

More than once I've played a game on dual shock thought it controlled like shit then been corrected when I play it on pc/360
