Whatever happened to Ignition Entertainment?

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
We know IE is (in)famous for their bland and subpar localization on Oboromuramasa and Arc Rise Fantasia but after they released El Shaddai (from what we know had a surprisingly good localization), they just.. Disappeared. Did they close down?

Their parent company was purchased by Disney. Disney has shut down pretty much every single one of their video game studios, and Ignition wasn't particularly successful in this realm either. What do you think happened.

Last I remember hearing of them, they made a fuckton of lofty promises with Dragon's Crown (you only pay a cost of $30 for the game for both PS3 and Vita) and then couldn't shepherd development of the game along, so Atlus got the publishing rights to the project from them.

If they were in that much financial trouble, it's probably not surprising we have not heard much of them since.

They should do rewrites of all classic novels.

"Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee."

Ignition: I hate you whale.

You sound mad.

Last I remember, their CEO(s?) were nowhere to be found, the company was doing poorly, they were shutting down all their development studios, and then Shane left the company, Atlus acquired Dragon's Crown and proceeded to throw them under the bus by saying all the announcements they made were empty promises and nonsense, and then I never heard about them again.

Is this what happened to Oboromuramasa? Lol.

The game is fully voiced, so they were had to stick with one text box for every voice clip, but they only used like half the space in the box, so you could clearly hear characters speaking multiple sentences, but the text was only 10-12 words. End result: everyone talks exactly the same and the script has no flavor. Not helping was the game's tendency to fade in from black to the characters talking about an exciting action scene that just happened offscreen.

As a bonus, they translated a haiku so literally at one point that it actually lost the haiku structure.

Such a fun game but easily the WORST localisation effort I've ever played:

Now I want to read more about the Muramasa botch job. I did not know the translation was considered to be so bad. Is there a video or article detailing some of its failings with examples?

They also did a hack job on Arc Rise Fantasia as well. The translation was dry and the voicework sounds like they just got people off the street to read the script. No soul whatsoever.

One of the few games I simply couldn't finish because of how god awful the acting was.

No real article that sums up every little mistakes, but if you even know some Japanese, you can very obviously tell entire sentences are completely left out. The language is also less poetic, as they cut out almost any dialogue that doesn't directly move the plot along. Everything is very bland which does not reflect the good voice acting at all. I think there was also some things that were flat out wrong, like item descriptions and an alert that said "you cannot carry anymore items" when it should have meant "you cannot carry anymore of THIS item."

The game is completely awesome though so I'm glad it got over here at all.

shane left ignition? What's happened to him?

I miss his opinions on podcasts. Did he move onto sony? That was it wasn't it?

I *think* I remember the guys at 8-4 mentioned on the podcast that Shane couldn't come on their show anymore precisely because of his new position.

Most recently they were to publish Order Up, Planet Crashers, and Fractured Soul on retail for 3DS, but all ended up on the eShop instead.

But yeah, dead silence since. They'd be a good pick-up for ZOO Keeper 3D if they did one last retail game; they brought over the DS game.

It sounds like they are in need of a remix. Fortunately for them, the freakin weekend has not yet ended. Still time to have some fun.

I just remembered, was it true that GAF was happy that Ignition Entertainment was localizing ARF and they laughed at Xseed for not getting the rights to ARF? :p
