North American Wii U sales came in between 110,000 and 125,000 units in January, the console's second full month of availability in the territory, analysts have estimated.

Weighing in with sales predictions ahead of the NPD Group's release of official market data this Thursday, both Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter and fellow analyst firm EEDAR said Xbox 360 remained the best-selling games platform in North America last month, followed by 3DS, PS3 and Wii U.
On the software front, Pachter said he expects sales to be led by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Just Dance 4.

Wedbush / EEDAR January 2012 hardware sales estimates (change year-on-year):

360 - 180,000 (-33%) / 260,000 (-4%)
3DS - 160,000 (-7%) / 120,000 (-30%)
PS3 - 145,000 (-24%) / 120,000 (-37%)
Wii U - 125,000 (n/a) / 110,000 (n/a)
DS - 60,000 (-21%) / 31,000 (-59%)
Wii - 52,200 (-66%) / 39,000 (-74%)
Vita - 45,000 (n/a) / 35,000 (n/a)
PSP - 7,500 (-63%) / (n/a)
PS2 - 300 (-96%) / (n/a)
Total - 775,000 (-13%) / 715,000 (-20%)

On the subject of Wii U's performance to date, Pachter said: "Nintendo must improve sell-through of its Wii U if it hopes to maintain significant market share in the next generation.

"The console received a tepid response from consumers, for a variety of reasons: first, we think that the console was misunderstood by many as a peripheral for the Wii; second, the price point for the Wii U is relatively high, and the launch was into a weak economy; and third, firstparty software support was thin, and third-party software was not sufficiently differentiated to convince many that they needed a Wii U as a replacement for their Xbox 360 or PS3.

"If the Wii U is to thrive, we think that Nintendo must market it more effectively, must speed up the pace of first-party development, and must convince third parties that they must support the Wii U or they will lose market share."

Didnt Pachter say last month the Wii U did 600k in Dec and was wrong.

Numbers aside, I think he's parroting the obvious on the Wii U front. It needs more games. It needs better marketing. There really isn't a whole lot else to point out.

I was expecting there was a shot at missing 100K.
Although that WILL happen when Nintendo runs into a 4-week reporting period (i.e. February). January being 5 weeks is a boon there.

The estimate for standalone Wii hardware sales seems a tad low, IMO.

I see February under 100,000. But Nintendo will ease the damage by saying THE WII U HAS SOLD OVER 1 MILLION IN NORTH AMERICA oh yeah!

Wii did 436k its first January, severely supply constrained. There will be no revenue spin or "not doomed, look at Wii" comparison this time around.

Uh oh, the "weak economy" has been mentioned. I wonder how much of an effect it'll have this coming holiday season when all three are out there and their last generation consoles are out at half the price?

Better than I expected, still kind of sluggish. If true. How did PS3/360/Wii/etc. do their first January?

360 still had production problems, so there's not a great comparison.

360 (Jan 2006) 250,000
Wii (Jan 2007) 436,000
PS3 (Jan 2007) 244,000

Lowest months of first 3 years:
360 - 161,000 (first February), 155,000 (second May)
PS3 - 82,000 (first April), 82,000 (first May)
Wii - 259,000 (first March), 274,000 (second January)

Impressive that a console like Wii U sells 100k+ and no AAA games in sight. =)

I seems it sells itself.

below the DS and Wii.

How long is the DS going to continue to eat sales that should belong to the 3DS in North America?
Not much longer I imagine. Last Jan the DS did 76k vs the 3DS 170k. Looks like the DS will sell even less this time (albeit possibility the 3DS as well).

Because A) They're much cheaper, and B) they've amassed a HUGE library of games and games like COD and AC3 constantly sell new systems to a new generation.
PS3 is only $30 cheaper and Wii U has CoD/AC3 too (no one bought them)

Any way you spin it, these Wii U sales are bad.

Pachter's estimates are usually not bad. He did quite well against the rest of GAF last year.

Not saying he isn't an idiot, but his monthly predictions aren't usually too far off.
Pachter trolls so he stays relevant. Staying relevant means he keeps making bank. Cant hate the dude for working the media.

If it is selling worse than the $599 PS3 did after the initial holiday release, than they have some problems. The window to fix this is going to keep shrinking if neither Microsoft or Sony go crazy with the pricing of their new systems. This will be a very interesting E3.

First January in USA:

PS2: 248k
Xbox: 127k
Gamecube: 59k (after a much stronger start than Wii U, too)
GBA: 171k (8th month)
DS: 152k
PSP: 179k (11th month)
360: 249k
PS3: 244k
Wii: 435k
3DS: 171k (11th month)

I can see it going under 100k in February. They need a price cut badly.
