Destructoid: PS4 controller prototype & devkit photo, [Up: New Photo/Info In OP]

It's super fug but it's a mock-up so it's ok. I'm also glad the move orb/light thing worked its way into the controller and glad to see the dual cameras on console itself. (I hate motion shovelware, but part of me still wants to believe that developers will eventually utilize the feature in compelling ways for core games.)

I'm somewhat concerned about the touch-pad thing though. Its placement looks kinda shoehorned in, and seems awkward to use. I'm gonna stay optimistic and give it the benefit of the doubt till we get more solid stuff though.

Didnt make the gif btw.

Oh god this is perfect. I could almost hear the cop-car siren coming outta the speaker on the controller.

Hmmm, about what I expected. Very good!

I don't know why people are complaining about the looks lol. As if aesthetics was ever a factor in determining whether a controller is good or not.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the working theory is that they're screw covers and not buttons.

swifty 'confirmed' that those are buttons.

it's entirely possible considering there's no branding on the controller, ie: no printing done to the surface, meaning no labels under the buttons.

all i know is that what we see there is missing 2 buttons. either options/share or start/select. those things look like buttons, soo....

The PS2 and PS3 buttons are digital. Each had 8-bit values so they have 0-255 as a range of input. It's not "analog" analog requires a potentiometer. DS2 and 3 used a "digital potentiometer" which isn't a "real" one but it mimics analog.

Thank you for the clarification. I guess I was confused on what analog actually is.

It's a pre-production Wii devkit (Remember, the Original Wii had Gamecube ports).

Pretty sure it's just a regular Wii kit. The GC ports have little to do with BC in this case; some hardware debug / setting functions are routed through the GameCube controller (really annoying when you realize there isn't a spare GC controller for most kits). Not sure if they changed it in later kits but through 2010 that was how it worked...

Proof? Sorry, I'm not doubting but I just want to see it.

Please dont include touch commands on games.

Please dont include touch commands on games.

Menus are fine.

Seeing as how there isn't a screen - it would be impossible to do proper "touch".

Swiping, however, is different. You can pull down from the top for a system notification bar, like Android. Swipe left/right for, let's say, spinning 180 quickly. Turning a crank in a game with a circular motion, etc.

No "touch" - but swipe gestures I'm sure will make it in games. Look at Killzone M - some swipe gestures for melee combat.

Ultimately what I am seeing is OK from a design perspective since you will always have your main method of control - but there will be a minor addition of swipe gestures.

It is a good balance that does not break the end-user from their TV screen while playing, it allows for a little bit more peripheral control without taking over the controller and over-complicating what works.

They are keeping it simplified and I think that is fine - despite me not caring for the addition at all. I'm fine with just a controller. I like the new curves since I would like more meat on my DS3 so I'm fine with this - but the touchscreen/LED - I don't care if it is or isn't.

I don't see it as intrusive, tho.

I keep looking at that picture and I really hope the final controller isn't as bulky as this one appears to be.

Oh they will for the first couple of big exclusives.

You got to take in consideration CrossPlay games with Vita, what if some Vita game mostly utilized the touchpad on the Vita? (ie: Touch gestures were the main method of play)

Then you got the same game on the PS4. It might be weird to totally switch from gestures to tactile analog sticks etc.

I am assuming that's where this touchpad will come in handy, along with web and OS navigation that has been mentioned already numerous times.

i don't know how to look up people and their post history, but a handful of pages back i saw someone quote an earlier post from swifty. he said that since the cat was out of the bag he would go ahead and say that start and select are the buttons to the left and right of the touch pad. the person quoted him was asking why everyone completely missed swifty's post.

the only things i see to the left and right are those little squares that look really out of place even for screw covers. i don't know why there would even be screws going through the front of the controller to begin with.

i also could have sworn i saw a tweet from someone in the industry sound off on it too. but it'sbeen a rough day and i browse gaf on my phone with spotty signal throughout the day. if someone wants to go back through and clarify what i may or may not have seen about the buttons or swifty's post go for it. it seems like our usual leaks sources are keeping their lips sealed all of the sudden. even vgleaks appears to just be reposting stories from other sites now.

Fucking screw covers. I can't believe that theory got any traction.

The sticks aren't analog either if that's how you're going to be.

That article still has me in stitches. The horrible renders. The Playstation "DUEL EYE." The strained and ultimately hilarious attempts at sounding official. So good.

you are not qualified enough to be using that notation

I have certification in Advanced Greentext Protocols, sir.

Oh okay, I saw that post. I just don't remember anyone's name on here so : /. Thank you.

Looks good to me, but that doesn't matter with controllers. It can be an ugly pig, but if it feels right in my hands and the buttons are quality, then I'll be the one squealing.

imo, touch/swipe commands on playstation games are just for show. It should be optional.

Hated those in Vita. (Uncharted GA).

On OS menus or UI related, its a nice addition.

Actually that stuff with the memory inside the controller and storing stuff relevant to the sharing feature is something I've heard before.

I also heard you would basically log in and out of PSN using the controller and it would store your profile information on it.

All absolute hearsay though.

We'll see on the 20th.

Those analog sticks look horrible. Too sharp edge, I mean they will bruise my thumbs in no time. Just keep them how they have been for years.

did you see the mockup on gaf with the white symbols on black buttons? looked amazing. i think sony thinks they have to have those colors associated with the symbols for some reason though. give us some credit guys!

Where's the pic?

Vita doesn't have colored buttons...actually, the finish of the Vita is really nice. Would like to see a same sort of classy look for the new DualShock controller.

The more I think about it, the more I think the touchpad would be better placed below the sticks instead of above them. The analog sticks are seriously going to get in the way.

Pick up a DS3 controller and rub your thumb across the "Sony" logo. The sticks aren't going to get in the way.
