Just thought this would be relevant to some of the discussion in this thread.

Time and again, Bowser kidnaps Peach. Why do Mario and Peach still race go-karts and play tennis with him?

SM: If you're familiar with things like Popeye and some of the old comic characters, you would oftentimes see this cast of characters that takes on different roles depending on the comic or cartoon. They might be businessman in one [cartoon] or a pirate in another. Depending on the story that was being told, they would change roles. So, to a certain degree, I look at our characters in a similar way and feel that they can take on different roles in different games. It's more like they're one big family, or maybe a troupe of actors.

Now all we need is for the original troll Chad Warden to return and smack talk.

I love Nintendo games, but that is absolutely brilliant advertising. The more mudslinging the better (especially for GAF).

I like how people are posting "lol Sony game sequel" yet post 3 completely different titles, yet Mario is still just the ONE character recycled again and again and again.
Yep, the last 10 Killzone, Resistance and Uncharted games on the playstation consoles give a completely different set of experiences compared to the last 10 NSMB, Mario Kart, Tennis, Smash, Party etc etc on the Ninty ones.

As for characters, ten of those games have a plumber in overalls taking part in a variety of genres as a mascot, the other ten have a white male with cropped brown hair and a selection of guns taking part in a variety of shooting bipedal targets in the head.

Video games repeat what is popular, both companies are guilty of that, but at least there is one of each of those Mario games per system, rather than putting out 8 first party shooters on one console with the same faceshooting gameplay in each one.

It's funny because Sony's first-party stuff is terrible. The system sounds like it will win by default in spite of that, especially if the Xbox rumours prove true.

To those people posting lists everywhere:

1. Sony is a much bigger publisher than Nintendo, its natural that they have more IPs (That doesn't excuse Ninty from releasing few this gen though).

2. Mario is a bigger franchise than arguably all of Sony's IPs combined. Of course his face will be seen at least five times a year.

EDIT: Console wars are gold in the beginning of a generation.

NSMB, NSMBWii, NSMB2, NSMBU. I guess the new Luigi DLC if you want to count that? Compared to:

Uncharted 1, 2, 3, Golden Abyss
God of War 1, 2, 3, (soon) Ascension, Chains of Olympus, Ghosts of Sparta
Killzone 1, 2, 3, Liberation, (soon) Mercenary

Not really sure what your point is. The difference is Sony invests in both breath and depth. We haven't seen a creativity beyond their comfort zone from Nintendo's titles in over two generations now.

Speaking of console wars, I have only witnessed Nintendo vs world console wars on GAF. What are Playstation vs Xbox console wars like? "Your console is slightly different from mine, but roughly the same!!!!" ?

I just had a look at that huge Mario picture.

It does feel like Nintendo come up with franchise ideas and then just slap Mario all over it and hope it sells.

It's great that they have a mascot who is so widely recognised and associated with games, but they should at least try and branch out.

That's pretty stupid to be honest.

It was like that argument that Kirby Epic Yarn and Wind Waker should have been new IP's.

What fucking difference does it make? The game would be exactly the same mechanically, and you'd be doing the same shit with a different character. It really doesn't matter that much, and people make it a far bigger deal than it should be.

"Oh, Yay, Another Killzone Game."

"Oh, Yay, Another God of War Game."

"Oh, Yay, Another Uncharted Game."

Works both ways, unfortunately. I want new IP's from everyone, please.

Pretty much.

I'm actually a lot more thrilled about the console war stuff starting up again than I thought I would be, though :p Sometimes it's nice to see people remember they are competitors and actually come out swinging.

I feel like its 1994!

Haha, exactly!

Btw I don't remember any of that smack talking or arrogance or whatever you want to call it in the psx era (shown in the history of playstation docus etc) and have never seen that ff7 thing.

I never ever went on gaming forums or websites in the late 90s though.
Or maybe it just never reached Europe.

The image I got from sony back then is that they were benign and let the games do the talking.
Maybe that is still how it is for the general public and only forum warriors will ever notice any of this.

None of those IPs have had 8 games release in the span of a single year though, unlike a certain mustachioed mascot who got whored out something awful during late-'11 to late-'12.

If all 8 of those games were the same genre then you'd have a leg to stand on. you use the term "mascot" in your post, that's exactly why Mario appears in so much, he is a mascot character capable of appearing in a wide range of genres.

it's happening right now, the arguments are all about the flops.
