More Halo 3 PC Rumors - Microsoft/Frankie denying still

I saw the thread, but it could mean absolutely anything. Including what you just said. But you look at the comments in here and its as if its coming out next month.

And considering how they treated the pc version of halo2, lets just say im not getting too excited.

Fair enough, but your original post was accusing people in this thread of 'pulling rumours out of their ass', when there is a lot of proof that Halo 3 was considered to be on PC at one point. The other thread doesn't mean 'anything', it means that Halo 3 was considered to be released on Steam at one point by Microsoft.
The question now is whether or not they're still considering it.

never left the stone age
And there never was a PC version of Fable 2, right?

Nor were there any driver notes referring to fable2.exe :p. Eh all signs point to Microsoft at the very least testing it out on PC, though why there would be lines referring to Halo 3 in public drivers makes no sense, not like they couldn't get some super special drivers in secret.

Or is the whole AMD driver thing out the window? I haven't been keeping track of this.

He didn't just say no, he gave us the standard PR speak.

"Also Steam thing is bunk as far as the Halo stuff is concerned anyway. on't know what Dyad is or what that was all about."

That's about as much of an outright denial as you'll ever get. I mean, you can say you don't believe him for a variety of reasons but to suggest that he didn't "really" deny it is getting to insane teamcg levels at this point

The "pulling out of the ass" part is for these multiple "ah new rumors, more proof" threads. If if they use halo2 pc as a basis for whether they're still considering it or not, it might be a while.

Ya but even there, why steam. Why not the windows 8 store instead? You know itll have achievements and will need some sort of Live attached to it. Itll be halo2 pc all over again. And halo2 pc is no where to be found on steam.

Wonder if that one is mentioned on it.

I seriously hope Microsoft aren't THAT stupid to let that shit happen twice. It's another reason why they could release these games on PC. Halo 2 especially deserves a second chance after MS sent it to die.

Honestly, if they really were still considering it for Steam, then why not just put a working halo2 PC version on steam and see how that fairs first? The game only needs a bit of tweaking and the way people talk about it in here, its the second coming of Christ. That to me would be a much more likely scenario. And do we know if halo2 is mentioned on steam?

Why is it stupid to try to leverage your biggest franchise to push your service?

Yes Halo 2 Vista was a terrible port and it did nothing for GFWL but it still makes way more "business" sense to use your big guns to push your own services, it just needs to be done right.

it doesn't make sense for them because their service sucks and they're never going to have a good one

New news = new thread. The 'rumour' in the OP is from a recent AMD driver, it's worthy of a new thread. I'm pretty sure there's only 2 Halo 3 PC threads anyway.

For all we know, that might actually be the plan.

Windows 8 sure is a big gun, huh. :p

How does it suck? Steam does essentially everything Live does now on consoles (minus the apps which steam doesnt do).

GFWL is clunky and many games that have used it have had many patching and game save bugs. GFWL games require separate account and friends list for a tiny subset of games. Many reports of people completely unable to get GFWL games running on their machine.

oops I thought you were talking about GFWL

Honestly, it would not have been bad had they delivered what they promised. They showed you logging into windows vista and having your friends list right on your desktop, double click, message them, get invitations, what they first showed was really sweet.

Its actually starting to show now on windows 8. Just a tad late. If they did what they actually showed, it would have been a lot more impressive.

edit: no i mean Live. Live doesn't suck at all. All they needed to do was copy paste that option onto windows like they said they would. They never did that. But Live as a service doesnt suck at all. The pc team who designed live for halo2 pc is what sucks.

The Windows Store is not capable of housing a big game like Halo 3. There would be no multiplayer functionality and yes, as far as I can tell, MS requires the games to be able to run on Surface. Thus the touch controls. It's a different market.

Whether or not it does come out (I'm leaning towards it will), it has obviously been worked on. Why waste people's time porting it if you're not going to sell it?

Ive worked in companies that didn't sell finished games cause the bosses nephew didn't enjoy it.

Could be they realized it would be a more challenging port than they had assumed. Not having direct access to the team that made a first generation game on a new hardware could make things difficult.

No. There are no plans to do either at this time.

Never used steam. How would Xbox Live work on it ? Or is it just unlimited new accounts ?

Microsoft has dropped the PC version of Xbox Live, known as GFWL, entirely.

We don't have anything official, but the last 5-6 games Microsoft have published have been Steamworks.

Valve's version of Xbox Live. Includes cloud saves, achievements, a type of modding integration, dedicated server searching tools, join on friends, and Valve does not take a cut of any game sold outside of Steam.

Steam accounts are free. You can make as many as you want and play F2P games like Team Fortress 2 or Dota 2 on those accounts.
There is also no subscription fees.

He is referring to GFWL, but there are some pretty glaring issues with Live on console.

Paying for P2P connection.
Services hidden behind pay wall.
Paying for advertisements.
Impossible to sort through Indie games effectively.

You don't see any of the issues here?

Read the first line and jumped for joy, read the second and was a little downbeat but it is promising nonetheless.

Phil Spencer said that they've been focusing on the Win 8 store for first party games when asked about the state of GFWL on twitter.

While a large amount of the games available on the store are phone ports there are a few recent XBLA ports not available on steam (to my knowledge) like Hydro Thunder.

Its already been discussed earlier in this thread, but it sounds like the Windows 8 Store will not work for mainstream games.

3.5 Your app must fully support touch input, and fully support keyboard and mouse input

Your app must provide visual feedback when users touch interactive elements.
Your app must not use an interaction gesture in a way that is different from how Windows uses the gesture. The Windows 8 touch language is described in Touch interaction design.

3.8 Your app must meet the basic performance criteria on a low-power computer

The app must launch in 5 seconds or less
The app must suspend in 2 seconds or less
Low-power computers are described in How to test your app with the Windows App Certification Kit.

Microsoft defines a 'low-power computer' as an Intel-Atom. Good luck getting many games running on that.

Oh yes I know. But those requirements, just like the store itself, will evolve over time (however slow that may or may not be). I think it's very possible you'll be able to have games that work on touch screen and games that won't.

The potential of cross-buy/interaction between your phone, Xbox and PC has a lot of potential to grab some attention if done right (admittedly a pretty big if).

And impossible between x64/x86, PPC, and ARM.

Might be making an interesting point since PC and the next Xbox will have similar architectures.

I personally think Microsoft has separated casual gaming into the Windows 8 Store, and more dedicated gaming into Steamworks.

That would make Gabe happy, I'm sure.

It's impossible to do something that has already been done?

What's impossible?

They already have this working Skulls of the Shogun has Skulls Anywhere and Galaxy Reign was just released with cross-buy support (Still a work in progress through).

I was referring to more demanding games, but fair point.

I'm sure that game was designed from the ground up with ARM support in mind, won't be possible with many D3D games.

Sure it wasn't running on ARM but Shadowrun and Universe at War had Xbox players playing against PC ones years ago.

Fair point. Those games were designed from the ground up to run on PPC and then ported to x86 with GFWL, which makes the port very simple.

I should have clarified more that I was looking at larger games having conflicting architectures between x86/D3D and ARM.

Would be difficult to do for larger budget titles.

Stinkles, if Halo 3 is confirmed to not be coming to Steam/PC, could you explain why "Halo3" was found the the AMD 13.3 driver code, and why the game was listed in the Steam database?

It is possible that they had a planned PC port, but cancelled it down the line.

Does not explain why both the Steam Database entry and the AMD beta drivers were updated so recently.

Not actually that important
This thing will never have couch multiplayer like each one of HALO PC games -_-
It'd be amazing to play 4p couch co-op with the htpc hooked up to the pj, sigh

This happened with me when I bought arkham city on a steam sale. The game said it needed to update GFWL but the update kept failing (just as it did on my desktop when I tried to install it there after a frustrating fight with my laptop) and it simply would not work.

To make matters worse, when I went back to play arkham asylum on my desktop, all of my save game data was just gone with an empty save game folder too ಠ_ಠ

I ended up having to sail the high seas to find a way to play my game.

No idea about the AMD drivers but maybe the Steam update was when they removed the community page? Would things like that count as an update?
