Saw this billboard on the way to school today. The EMP Museum here in Seattle is having an exhibition called The Art of Video Games, and this is one of its promotional billboards.

I am so giddy over this! I never imagined that Gunstar Heroes would get this kind of larger-than-life public exposure, especially 20 years after its release. So awesome!

haha I was going to post this earlier too. these billboards are everywhere.

Anyone here ever try their hand at make custom cover art for those universal game cases? I know you can make requests at thecoverproject.net, but I never thought about asking on GAF.

There are the occasional 16-bit covers in the custom cover thread. If you make a request in there, there's a fair shot someone will do it.

By the way, whats the best solution to cleaning dirty Genesis labels? I'm not sure if its that the games are sun damaged or that they just have a layer of dirt on the labels, but they seem a little darker in tint than the normally should be.

Re: Custom cases

Amazon sells some third-party Genesis/Master System style cases but the plastic they use is really soft and the tabs that hold the carts in place tends to break. The film that holds the artwork in place is also glossy instead of matte like real Genesis cases. At $6 for a three-pack I don't think it's worth it.

What I do instead is this: Anytime I see a cheap boxed genesis game for a dollar or less (typically sports) I'll buy it anyway and use it as a donor box. Then I print custom or replacement artwork for my cart-only games that need cases. It's cheaper than the aftermarket clamshells on amazon, and blends in with my collection better since they're matte.

I never bothered with UGC because I'm not a fan of the clear plastic. Black is beautiful.

I thought they redid the soundtrack too. Was that Japan-only?

The Master System didn't have the FM Synth in the US. However, it did in Japan. Phantasy Star is one of the games that uses the FM Synth for music (in Japan).

Since the Genesis "re-release" of Phantasy Star only happened in Japan, it uses the Japanese Rom, which uses the FM Synth of the Master System.

So, technically, the Japanese-only Mega-Drive re-release of Phantasy Star sounds better than the US Release of Phantasy Star on the Master System. However, it sounds the same as the Japanese Master System Version.

Personally, I think the FM-Synthesizer actually sounds worse.

Here's a video with both versions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDPvSoiCAWg

The darkening I'm assuming you are talking about on the cart label can't really be helped. It looks like years of sweaty palm grease have seeped into the label... Maybe it's some other thing that causes it.

man, there's a guy in buy/sell with a cheap copy of Revenge of Shinobi, and im trying to figure out which version he has, he doesn't wanna find out for me - cmon guy, it's an awesome game, and you only need to get to like level 3!

also, the custom covers on this page are fantastic, great work you guys. gonna try printing those out tonight.

I thought Super Fantasy Zone never came out in america, or are you just looking for a Japanese cart?

yeah, looking for an EU one, they're about $25-30 on ebay and before hardcore gaming 101's awesome sega book i didn't even know it existed, clearly looks like the definitive fantasy zone!

ps just got back in town & got your Streets of Rage 3, so awesome! and thanks so much for the extra manuals, totally gonna leave you good feedback in buy/sell later man

yeah, looking at the 3 i got..you're right. i might use these for California Games type shit but not for stuff i really like. ive decided ill just be patient & use your method as well, there are indeed a lotta cheap sports/etc titles going about so it shouldn't take too long, hopefully

ps again though, UGC are great for NES/SNES and at least they're uniform for those purposes, they look good on shelves when not mixed with classic genesis/master system shells, i think

I just bought a copy of Shadow of Vermillion in box but the game has one of those rental stickers that split apart and leave VOID on the cartridge. anybody know how to get rid of that stuff?

Glad to hear, i just had some extras for some un-common stuff, and figured for the whole radio silence issue before we exchanged, i'd give ya a little something extra.

I've got the Japanese Megadrive Phantasy Star, it does not support FM synth because it needed extra hardware on the Master System in order to play it. It sounds the same just as any US Master System game does when played with the Power base Convertor.

Went to the game store yesterday and came back with a couple more Genny games amongst the pile. I grabbed Cool Spot and (on GAF's recommendation) Super Monaco GP.

Yeah, I've got the JP Mega Drive version of PS1, too. Normal sound, no FM.

FYI: If you boot said game on a JP Mega Drive (or a US Genesis switched to JP mode), the game will display a Mark III splash screen upon boot. If you run it on a normal US system, no such screen will show. AFAIK the game runs exactly the same other than that.

Go check the exhibit. It's not like walking into an arcade...they give it the museum treatment with a little style. And there are games on display to play on massive screens. I caught the exhibit when it was in DC, and it was well worth it.

Also, grab a mug and a fridge magnet. You'll be glad you did.

Thunder Force III? Heh... That was another goodwill find for me. It was complete and I ended up trading it in the B/S/T thread. I'm not into shmups myself.

Ecco the Dolphin is still remarkable to look at even today for me. The environment and the character art was so well done, but that's most likely me being nostalgic I didn't really have a vast Genesis collection growing up.

I believe this would be the right place to ask: is there a stand-alone solution for recording video (mainly composite) from old machines like the Genesis. Of course it should not introduce much lag.

I think any $10 Easy Cap USB off Amazon should be fine for composite video purposes.

In light of the fan made Unleashed mod hitting Generations today, I figured i'd ask if there were any worthwhile Sonic fan games made via repro carts? I have no idea what happened with Megamix or if they saw the project all the way through.

I think I prefer the FM synth, honestly. Like, despite growing up with a Game Gear, I've recently come to dislike how the PSG can only really put out one kind of square wave, compared to the NES's 3/4 types; it tends to make all the games sound kinda samey, which is rather disappointing.

Megamix is a Sega CD game now. Just grab a CD-R.

Ah cool, makes it even easier. Second question...is it even worth it to buy a Sega Master System at any point, or would just be better off getting a power base?

Even if the only MS game I can think i'd want to play would be Phantasy Star 1...

Same here. I loathe most of the Master System music, majority of it makes me want to stick toothpicks in my ear drums. I don't know much at all about the Japanese Master System, but if it had better sound capabilities, then I don't understand why the US version didn't have the same capabilities.

what's megamix?

caught an auction today for boxed copies of sword of vermillion, shining in the darkness & valis for about $10 each, that was pretty cool. still waiting on CIB copy of Dick Tracy (even brought the genesis poster, for $4!), i gotta pay some of this off so it's a good thing the list is winding down. the top ones left for me right now are still Super Fantasy Zone & Rolling Thunder 3, keeping an eye on both.

got another craigslist trade coming up this weekend, and a childhood friend is letting me raid his old box of genesis & SNES carts soon too! man i gotta find more boxes/shells, heh

Yes. Started as a Sonic [1] hack for the Genesis, but moved to Sega CD at some point, which makes it much, much easier to play on actual hardware.

Kind of a legally dubious area, considering it is based on Sonic [1] (in fact, the game has a mode where you can play Sonic [1] itself, which most likely isn't legal, even with the gameplay changes included), but actually playing it on a Sega CD is pretty cool, even though the load times are pretty long (and I've had graphics glitch up on me slightly, at least once, and at least one load time that never ended - might've just been a bad burn, not sure).

I've decided I need Alien Soldier in my life.. But one trip to eBay killed that idea real quick.

I've gotten spoiled by real Genesis hardware + XRGB mini... But how is the Wii VC at capturing that real Genesis feel? Is it close enough?
