Full Unreal Engine 4 Elemental demo video running on PS4

If anything, NVidia will become the biggest whore you have ever seen in the industry in the coming years. Node shrinks are becoming harder, yields are rougher, and GPU's are getting larger by the day. Without AMD doing anything worth while, NVidia will gouge your eyes out.

The 7970 competes with the 680 and often beats it. It costs $400 today. In about a year, the same amount of power will be available in upper-midrange cards costing $300 or even less. I don't know why people think AMD are far behind - they really are not.

Yea but usually in games campaigned with AMD. You look at games campaigned with nvidia then you see nvidia cards beating AMD cards. I am worried about how good BF4 will run on my setup seeing as Dice is being partnered with AMD :(

Why nobody has read my comment on the first page ? PLease see the link. EVEN the PC version looks worse and lacks details from " THE TARGET VIDEO" that everyone is tqking as reference.

It's not a big difference, maybe some aesthetics changed. But I agree, we should compare to the current PC version.

The doors in particular look different.

The PS4 has a really peculiar AA filter. It's something I noticed in the Killzone trailer, too.

Hmm.. so it seems like there have been some upgrade. The wall textures previously looked like granola bars.

In all honesty, this demonstration isn't exactly the best way to judge a machine's performance. We have Killzone Shadow Fall, Deep Down, Luminous, and Knack to go off by for start.

If you read my previous post that on that we completely agree. That said, I'm still not buying "Deep Down" as an in-game (not in-engine though) footage. I do expect games to get there eventually (Uncharted 1 vs Uncharted 3) but I need incontrovertible evidence. That'll only happen once actual gameplay is shown off on the final product.

Its a horrible demo in terms of the art so I don't really mind how much worse it looks.
Just get some fucking art direction in there. Am not doing this gen again if its just the same.

Second Engine to look worse though. Which should be expected.
Unreal Engine hardly excites though.

On top you have a build that costs almost or over one thousand dollars to make.

On the bottom you have a build that will sell for 400 dollars total. Deal with it? Epic cannot afford to make engines and games tailored to the PC market like this.

You shouldn't write off the PS4 just yet though. This looks like one of those scenarios where prototype hardware is old, janked, dated, and unoptimized.

And yet this thread still goes. I would of thought gaf would know this. How are people judging this as PS4's potential, when actually the hardware is not really a PS4 nor is the demo complete, i have no idea.

Because PC GAF has to remind PS4 GAF that inferior hardware = less performance. This bullshit is getting old. I'm more pissed off that UE4 has not lived up to the hype than the PS4 performance. That's the real take away here.

Alexandros, Sethos and KKRT00 would like to have a nice chat with you.

Yikes.

So not only is the lighting significantly different, it has a fraction of the particle effects, downgraded textures, and almost none of what I suspect was bokeh?

That's a pretty big downgrade from what they initially showed.

If Durango is worse... This is gonna look bad.

The idea of an Unreal Engine game looking more gimped on Xbox is historically humorous.

I love how everyone is saying it must be unoptimised, it must be running on old dev hardware etc. with... What reasoning exactly?

Even if that were the case, get used to PS4 not being cream of the crop for very long. At all. It still looks good BTW, I'm referring strictly to how the thread is going so far...

Imagine the rationalisations and mental gymnastics if one or more of Durango's games look better than PS4 demos so far. Maybe they were using a 4GB kit! Will we have people typing through real actual tears?

If the rumoured specs turn out to be true, then why would be it "mental gymnastics"? It is based in logic founded on facts.

Seriously, these kinds of sweeping generalizing put downs are so not helpful.

As for how people are saying that it may be unoptimized, given what we have seen of other demos, this one, at least on the surface does not compare well.

I don't get this. For me it is not simply that it looks poorer than the original demo, it is that the original demo really didn't look that impressive. Sure it may have been doing some impressive things underhood, but it certainly doesn't look better to me or as good as other stuff shown running on PS4. To hold this an absolute metric for performance on the console at this stage seems less than advisible. I do think it looks good, just not that impressive. The Infiltrator demo blows it into the abyss for me. I am not really worried though.

Not looking good. The armor textures on the knight still have that awful UE3 metal look about them. I expected this to look a lot better considering PS4's specs since nothing seems too taxing in terms of processing power compared to other things we've seen.

is this fully optimized for PS4? Isn't Sony's meeting already over a month ago, and running on older dev kits?

Really, it clearer looks cleaner in the PC demo, but just saying, this talk feels premature a bit.

BattleField 4 so far has outclassed most of what I saw, but that doesn't mean those graphics are unattainable for PS4/720.

I seriously don't remember consoles ever being so inferior to PC that it visually blows them out of the water. Chillz pills fellas...Each company will go to work on there favorite platform.

I also watched the two videos side by side and it seems like the PC demo had a higher DoF, so the background clarity is less and character detail is slightly more. In the below gif, look at the lava/rock in the background.

That's besides the lighting differences and also there seems to different textures (not missing). For example in the second gif, the first pillar on the left at the bottom has 3 spokes in the PS4 demo but only 2 in the PC.

The level of detail and dynamic range took noticeable hits.

That lighting change really makes a difference.

I do hope developers end up releasing PC versions that look "as intended" rather than doing straight console ports.

Have you seen other PS4 demos? There's your answer.

EDIT- It was even mentioned at the conference that it was running on prototype hardware, not PS4. There's your second answer.

Oh it's not just PC gaf thats enjoying this moment.

Common sense is nowhere to be found in this thread.

Like Far Cry 3?

It really sucks how the lowest common denominator (Either PS4 or Durango) could potentially hold PC progress back for more years.

There is no standard PC spec though, and it is not economically sound to tailor games exclusively to high end PC hardware. Epic is building their tech to cater to consoles as much as PCs...Anyway PC games industry holds itself back...if every one bought the highest end GPU then devs would create games aimed specifically at that.

I understand that tailoring games to high-end PCs isn't optimal in terms of cost, but I'm just hoping they start on PC and port down rather than port up from consoles.

Assuming the Xbox rumors are true and it only has a 1.2TF GPU, it seems more likely that they'll start on PC and cut games down rather than start on Xbox and add resolution and AA for the PS4 and PC versions. Epic already has their engine built, and it shouldn't cost much money to keep their assets intact rather than downgrading them.

I think it will be similar to this gen to be honest...they will try and squeeze the most out of consoles specs and add stuff for the PC. Considering what sort of visuals we can expect next gen though, I dont really see this as much of a problem... Stuff like Agni, Deep Down and the new Epic demo...I am happy with those visuals.

I would be happy with those as well, but from what we're seeing with the elemental demo the PS4 versions won't look like them.

I just want to play something that resembles the Infiltrator™ demo within a few years. My fear is that PS4 won't be able to handle it and, as a result, the PC version will look like the PS4 version rather than the demo we're seeing now.

Double the RAM that targeted the 4GB PS4. They might have 8GB in the kit but it's not enough to target the 8GB in the final hardware.

Couldn't Kaz just ring up the devs and say '' hey guys you saw the feb announcement, so now you an use that whole 8gb ram in the devkit for whatever you want, chow''

but yeah your probably right and da devs only have 4gb to play with, poor poor devs, Mwuhahaha

I honestly don't understand this thinking. Say we follow your line of thinking. This demo is extracting every last ounce of juice from the PS4 according to Epics capabilities. This what we are going to get (it still pretty closely resembles the PC demo, despite some of the over theatrics here). But look elsewhere, say at the Agni Philosophy demo. That seemed to run almost 1:1 on PS4 for all intents and purposes. Would you be unhappy with those visuals? I actually prefer what was shown there to even the intruder demo.

Personally, I think KZ looks much more impressive than the PS4 demo, so I don't think there is reason for concern yet. Unless, one only considers this comparison and thinks there is no possible optimization that can be done to improve it... Just my 2 pence..

That super optimized UE4 engine running on final PS4 devkit. You really showed everyone, Epic. I have a feeling the software Sony shows at E3 from first parties will take a massive shit on this.
