I realise I shouldn't expect anything more but sometimes the MAL review comparisons make me laugh.

Goddamn, Admiral von Reuental is a badass. Schenkopp comes in swinging with a battle-axe and he avoids it twice, then shoots the blade off.
The Rosen Ritter are probably the most competent fighting unit in the whole Alliance, storming a flagship like that.
Unfortunate we didn't really get to see a fleet battle between Yang Wenli and von Reuental.
The Rosen Ritter are fucking HAX.

Anime, causing so many rifts in the community. It's almost worse than SportsGAF threads!

I hope our resident BroCure comes back eventually.

Was unexpectedly surprised by this anime. I thought it would have been something else entirely and certainly didnt expect to be laughing and happy for like 80% of the episode. All around funny and love Maou and Ashiya/Alciel too. Maou is easily more funny but I still laugh at Ashiya and that undying dedication for his master, if only he could hold a job. MgRonalds stuff was fun and that whole potato moment with chiho? Definitely will look forward to this every friday, good pick up funimation.

Bah the hero showed up, dont know how this will affect things and his rise to making money in the job ladder

So yeah anyway. Flowers of Evel Knievel 1 (of 13)

A show that shatters weeaboo dreams and presents Japan for what it is, a place with ugly run down buildings and ugly people. No wonder people like Mr. Mongo started crying over it. Rather refreshing really.

I suppose knowing what to expect visually meant it wasn't so jarring for me. Also I had no expectations of the show to begin with since my knowledge of the original material is zilch. I may actually give it two more episodes before making up my mind.

Forgot to mention. Celebrate the Year of Yulario!

God I love the jazz sessions in this. And the ragtime background to the bullying altercation was so good as well. This show makes me want to get the ol' piano retuned....

Yeah, this show really is a pleasant surprise. Also, first White Fox show I've seen with competent animations.

NTV have announced a new Gatchaman TV series!

Due to air from July, GATCHAMAN Crowds is, as always, produced by Tatsunoko Pro.

Depending on your age you may know Gatchaman better as Battle of the Planets or Eagle Riders (or even know the original from Tatsunoko vs Capcom or whatever it was called).

I wonder what the Crowds subtitle is supposed to mean. Maybe the new Gatchaman team are funded by Kickstarter...

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team 04
Damn, this was a great episode. From the greater focus on the Zion forces, to the internal drama in the 08th MS Team to the fight in the end, all was good and the pacing was very very well done too. Hopefully it says at least this good to the end.
Obligatory :chet

I'd say the pacing goes south after eps 6

Plenty that disagree with me, but everything after that felt disjointed.

I think I like Maou-sama more than the other first episodes because it sets up its simple premise well. I feel like the other shows don't do that as well, which is why I'm not as excited about them.

In Maou-sama, you know a basic background about the characters so far (even the heroine), you know what they want to do, and you know where the initial tension in the show will come from. Everything's very clearly explained for me.

All of this is accompanied by funny gags, although I admit that I'm a sucker for sudden stops in music during punchlines and jokes where serious situations are built up only for a joke to appear. For example, when Ashiya trying to use magic, nothing happens the first time and a taxi stops a second time. During the montage where Maou integrates themselves into society, the first two scenes are relatively serious and the Maou is smooth regarding his explanation. The last scene (rule of three!), of course, subverts this and I found it hilarious.

Unfortunately, I don't think Oregairu, MJP, and DS2 were as successful. Oregairu especially fared the worst of the four to me. By the end, I had no idea what the show wanted to do, and the characters suffered for it. I get that the show is going to be about the group helping each other through their problems, but it doesn't really do a good job of showing you that. Hachiman might be one who will go through the most change, but his relationship with Yukino doesn't change and he even helps Yui out. Yukino is obviously the main heroine, but I have no idea how she's going to get through to Hachiman and, as a character, she feels shallow because everything about her is told to you (this is probably because they're in clubroom basically all the time).

I'm easily amused and find a lot of mediocre jokes hilarious, but most of the talking in Oregairu isn't very interesting. The jokes that worked for me actually had a punchline. I thought Hachiman's flashbacks were funny because they build up to something. Yukino's insults and their conversations in general aren't really funny because it feels like the jokes are just sprinkled in their conversations for seasoning. I dunno. Everything in the show just feels really unfocused, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were due to a lazy transition from a light novel format to an anime format. Oregairu reminds me of the reasoning KyoAni had for introducing new characters: Having only two or three characters talking in a scene may work for a light novel, but it feels incredibly empty in an anime.

I kinda feel like I don't know where MJP is going as well, except less so. I actually thought the reactions were kinda funny until the last joke. As I said, I'm easily amused, lol. They were actually set up as jokes, which Oregairu didn't do. I can see why people might have been turned off by them though, since they repeat the same joke at least three times without any real variation. I also feel like they didn't do a great job setting up the show. The setting is a war between humans and aliens. The characters were awful in school, didn't have really interesting goals when asked, and did a great job in the field defying everyone's expectations in the field. That's great. With that in mind, does it really matter to me what happens after? I'm not really interested a show where I should expect the main characters to fail every time, only for them to succeed because they're actually not bad. Should I expect them to succeed every time only for them to fail at a critical moment? I don't know what the conflict in the show is.

DS2 does a good job telling me what I should expect from the show. It's just kinda boring, lol. The main characters are really plain so far. It's unfortunate too because, to me, this kind of plot kinda needs you to care about the futures of the characters, but I don't have reasons to. I really like Nitta though, and her Digimon is BLANKA. I'll probably watch it for her, lol.

Well, I shouldn't be too down on DS2, or any of the other shows so far, because I enjoyed watching them. DS2 first episode worked well enough to set things up, and I can't be too greedy with first episodes. Same with MJP. I'm sure the characterization in DS2 and the plot in MJP will come with time. I'm not as confident about Oregairu. Hopefully, it gives me reasons to continue with the show, lol.

so cute

so cute

I always thought its strange to at least compare first episode of a one season series to at least a two season one and I guess theres a game adaptation in the mix too...

Desu2 at least leaves a bit more there that needs to be explained, but then that seems unfair based on genre to compare everything to this comedy fantasy Maou that I figure doesnt have as deep and sprawling of a plot as the huge universe that spans thousands of years in MJP and the various characters in Desu2.

It's not strange or unfair to me. It doesn't matter if a show is 20 episodes or 200 episodes. If the first episode is boring, the first episode is boring. A show with a more complex plot requires a lot more finesse, I'd imagine, but that doesn't mean it's okay for it to be boring. It just means it's more understandable.

I thought you were gauging them on how well they present their premise not on the level of boringness of an episode?

Just tell me how the fuck some man 200 years ago predicted GODDAMN ALIENS.

What's that? No fucking explanation? Because this show is fucking bullshit and the writers make this shit up as they go and don't remember things from one episode to the next?

To be fair, many people were speculating that Aeolia's plan involved uniting humanity to prepare them for contact with aliens since the final episodes of season 1, so there was some foreshadowing. The fact that season 2 didn't really do anything but go, "Yes, it was about aliens" was kind of stupid though.

Many were speculating that some kind of alien intelligence had contacted him in the first place, or that he was an alien himself, which could explain why Celestial Being had a tech advantage over the rest of the world and also of his plans. But, in the end, nothing. Everything, from the technology, to predicting and enhancing human evolution to expecting contact with aliens, was just because he was a genius.

Also...

So, I've finally noticed that for whatever stupid reason, this show does NOT match up. As in, last episode Tieria goes "Lemme tell you bout Aeolia's plan, bro" and then credits roll. Now Suddenly Setsuna is in his Gundam fighting Ribbons. This has happened MULTIPLE TIMES. Fucking hell this show is poorly written shit.

Every episode from 00s2 had post-credit scenes, like the one in the final episode of season 1. If you stopped watching at the credits, you missed parts of every single episode.

Feelin' bored.

Saved several of these made by others.

And all look better than the original!

Maou-sama is simple but well-made and directed. That's good and sadly more than you can say about the most anime each season.

I don't know too much about direction, but it definitely feels this way. The reason I lumped four anime into one post is because I feel that Oregairu and Maou-sama are the simple anime, DS2 and MJP are the more complex anime, and one in each category does a better job telling me what the show is about than the other. The weird compare-and-contrast between the four in various ways is why I felt bothered to make a post in the first place, lol.

Also, I keep using the word boring, which is my bad. I didn't think any of them were boring. I'm just kinda defaulting to that word by accident. :(

Great way to end the story.
Let's go Part 3. That was great how they ended with Joseph in airport, Dio being discovered and Jotaro in the cell. I think we get this in the Fall or Winter
