God of War Ascension |OT| Gods up, Foes down

FINALLY beat trials of archimedes, holy fucking shit!!!! What an intense fight that, my controller was covered in sweat by the time I was done. Also, beat the game. I dunno about you guys but I am ready for ONE more God of War title for PS4. The last boss was pretty cool.

I like this game better than Bioshock Infinite now, BI gets so lame by the end...

Anyone else surprised this game came from SSM? They dropped a notch in my eyes. 4th console game in the franchise and they completely phoned it in. Don't give a shit about the MP but as far as SP goes it felt like they made it sleep walking which would explain all the technical faults. Seriously they spent 3 years on this? Now only ND remains Sony's top tier and SSM have a lot to prove. A whole damn lot.

I kinda agree, maybe the bled a lot of talent. It seems like the the studio is run by a clueless monkey. They outsource too much (Journey, Starhawk etc) and not focus within. Their next game has a lot to prove IMO.

I don't think it's that bad, but it does lack the polish I had come to expect from them. Even the PSP games felt like they had more thought put into them.

Lack of polish is the one thing that bugs me about this. I've been waiting to replay it until the sound patch and that's still not out. The game itself is quite good but no matter what combat never seems to click for me like it has in every other GoW. They've been helping out with so many projects since GoW3 came out I think it may have hurt this in the long run.

I loved the artwork, puzzles, and level design in it.

Yeah it seems they stretched themselves too thin by co-developing so many games. GOWA definitely doesn't feel like a game that was worked on for 3 years. You'd think Sony would make sure a franchise like GOW that generates a lot of profit would take priority, this could come back and bite them in the ass with the next title in the franchise.

As for MP Im sure people are enjoying it but really was it that necessary? The resoures and time allocated could have made GOW's bread and butter even better. My infinte respect goes out to developers like Irrational that put artistic integrity over sales gamble. Yeah we know the mass audience enjoy MP but that doesn't mean it should be shoehorned to games it doesn't belong in.

The MP is actually really fun and I usually don't like MP. I think Ascension was a big experiment for GoW4. Get a prototype version of MP out there and tweak the series standard combat a bit and use the feedback to shape the next game. It'll reduce the risk with the next numbered game, especially if that one uses a new mythology.

Firstly, I agree that more effort, time, care and resources should have been put into the single player. Too many bugs and lack of polish.

As for the multiplayer, it is great and will keep people playing way way longer than the single player and it's difficulty levels. Plus, people are way more willing to spend money on multuplayer DLC, letting them make more money in the long run. I think the multiplayer works very well and compliments the game, they have done a fantastic job bringing a GoW experience to a multiplayer audience.

GOWA sales don't look like they will be that strong or surpass GOWIII. I hope that shows that MP focus was the wrong thing to do and if anything they actually set themselves back, they should have experimented with the SP because as it stands it's extremely dated. If the next GOW on the PS4 is as linear and derivative then the fanbase will continue to drop off. They need a RE4 type change at this point.

I swear its as if i'm playing a different game than so many of you. The combat is the best in the series, the graphics are the best the PS3 has to offer, the environments are the most varied since GoW2, and I didn't experience any odd technical issues outside of a couple checkpoints I had to restart due to something not triggering, and falling through the level two times. (2 playthroughs)

The multiplayer is pretty great too. A breath of fresh air.

Beat it last night!

Didn't find any part to be particularly challenging. Overall, the game needed a tighter narrative and significantly improved sound work.

Did anyone else feel the sound was occasionally out of sync or simply not happening at times?

Also, the final boss, while nuts, wasn't what I was hoping for. I wasn't creeped out enough and was wanting some more underwater murkiness.

Had this since day one and I'm still waiting to play the single player because of the audio issues I've read about here. Hope that audio patch comes out soon.

My first play through was on Hard as well. To beat the trials, you need to pass three stages. Each stage is broken into two parts, and each stage gets easier as you move forward. The toughest challenge is the second part of the first stage.

To get through both parts of the first stage with enough health to easily beat the final two stages, you'll want to stick mostly with your fire weapon since it builds up your meter the fastest. Start off by releasing your clone, who fights very well independent of you, and also your float bubble. These two tools should be activated as often as they recharge, and hopefully you maxed them to their second tier.

With your clone fighting and an enemy trapped in a bubble, build up Rage meter by attacking with the full [],[] [],[] constantly. The last hit of this string is what spikes up the Rage meter a lot on hit. Interrupt your attacks with dodges and/or blocking as necessary, knowing you can block anything but the Medusa Stone Gaze and the Siren scream.

You can not block immediately after dodging too much, so try to get in parry deflections as well (hold block, tap X before you are hit). If successful, this causes an AOE effect that stuns enemies around your parried target - a very useful technique.

When ever you need to get some room, switch to your soul weapon and activate your Hades magic. It is really good because if its damage combined with the wide range of attack. Switch back to fire weapon for more Rage build up.

If possible, get your Rage built up to the full max for two levels of it. If you have to activate it early, go ahead but do so with Hades Rage. This works the best because it sends a ton of soul demons flying around to distract/hurt enemies while you and your clone continue to attack. Swith back to your fire blades.

If you use Rage and you still have 50% left, you can spam [] for a longer, more powerful attack string which continues to build rage quickly. Use your bubble floats on Sirens when they appear so they are easier to take out. Once you finish both parts, the first stage ends.

The second stage is easier. Just activate your items like before and spam throws against the flying demons. Parry the amazons, and attack while dodging backwards since they spear attack at mid range. The Mace beast is slow. Use your tolls to float him and clone attack him, spam your attacks from max distance, and roll past him once he walks you to a wall to start all over again.

The last stage is easiest. The mini boss can be killed with QTEs, and you can dodge his attacks with ease as you peck at him. The scythe spirits can not do anything if you wait until they go underground where you can then easily grab them with R1 for a combo starter.

After you get in a rhythm, the Trials are manageable. It was tough for me in my first play through, but it was because I played too defensively. You need to be on offense or parrying most times, using your magic and tools and Rage as generously as you can in the scone half of the first stage. In my second play through, I beat the Trials on my first attempt.

Yep, love the MP but they shouldn't let the SP suffer polish wise.

Dang. Just finished the game and i think i can safely conclude this iteration has the bet graphics on any console game period. WOW! The lighting was just amazing. Scenes like the one with the first mortal imprisoned by the furies and also the snake thing going through the transparent ice caves just blew me away. Amazing that 6 year old machine still catches me off guard. Maybe it's the art but man! Amazing game.

I'm really glad that they included multiplayer in this game. I've probably played the multiplayer alone for like 20+ hours, so it is my most played God of War game so far. I especially like the co-op mode. I hope that the upcoming DLC will include new co-op maps.

Have the developers given any reason why there is no host migration in the multiplayer by the way? Usually it have worked pretty well without it so far after my experience, but today i played a match online (Team Favor Of the Gods) and the host quit when my team was like 20 points away from victory and it was very close between the scores as well. We had like 7980 points and the other team had like 7800 points or so (the match ends when the first team reaches 8000 points). I assume that one guy on the other team were rage quitting because of this, but it is of course possible that it was just a random disconnect that happened instead.

It was really annoying, mostly because i had picked up a few Treasures Of The Gods. All stats and XP are only counted when the match officially ended, so if the host quit one second before the match ends, you wont get any xp or stats for that round.

Generally speaking, i wish that there were more intensives to stop rage quitting from happening. I've rage quitted a few time myself, so i know the feeling all too well, but if i knew there were some more "serious" consequences for quitting, for example getting banned from the multiplayer servers for an hour or so, then i think more people would think twice about quitting. This would only apply to manual quit through the menu though, because i know that random disconnects can happen (and i know it would be easy to get around this by just turning off the console or taking out the ethernet cable, but at least it would take a bit more work than just go to the menu and choose 'quit' :)).

Just finished this today.

The last boss is probably the most impressive thing I've ever seen in a game when it comes to graphics. I was overwhelmed by the scale and setting. Santa Monica are gods.

I really liked the game.

I decided to play through GOW and GOW 2 on the HD collection. Revisiting these games really made me appreciate the revamped combat system. Yes, that includes the weapons and new rage meter. Here's why.

No matter what the new weapon is that you earn in GOW 1 and 2, they are always inferior to the Blades of Chaos. Ascension's decision to make all the new weapons an element of the Blades was a great way for a player to experiment and enjoy using them. Seriously, how many times have we said, "Wow, a new weapon. Cool, it's a massive hammer. And it slow as hell!" In the end we still use the Blades for a majority of the games.

The new rage meter hid the over powered combos that can make the combat in GOW 1 and 2 boring. I love the square X 5, triangle combo. It looks great and kills every enemy in few hits. But by hiding this combo behind the new rage meter, they player is asked to use their skills to earn it, and when it is unlocked, the reward is satisfying.

Also, what the hell is wrong with the audio in GOW 1 on the HD collection. Everything sounds over modulated. GOW 2 sounds fine.

Got it at launch but it took Gamestop 4 weeks to mail it to me so I just started playing it. Audio is pretty bad and non-existent in some spots. Gameplay is fun but it's a bit difficult because I'm playing Ninja Gaiden 3 right now. It's hard to go from Ryu to Kratos as far as how slow Kratos is compared to Ryu. GOW is far superior though (obviously) and so far I'm really enjoying the game. Don't like the fact that I have to build up the combo meter to do standard combos but whatever. Would have been much better if the moves were unlocked through upgrades and the combo/rage meter just added damage when filled up.

This game is just so terrible. Im up to chapter 10 and its an absolute chore to play through. The same repetitive BS non stop. The stupid QTEs, mini battles ad nauseum.

It's like there is zero thought put into this at all. Im struggling to keep going just so i can finish it and shelve it again.

I'm at the part where you
move the big snakes around
. I have to admit... it's pretty fucking terrible. Not hard just not fun. It would be nice if I didn't have to fill that meter on the side to do basic combos that are in every other GOW. Kratos is too slow for a proper implementation of this kind of combat system.

Well to be fair a hack and slash game is based on repetition and recycled enemies. However, when the combat mechanics of a well established franchise is so drastically changed then I start to dislike playing it.

Edit: Wow! I fucking HATE the combat in this game. It's sooooo slow now.

It gets a lot better after that area. I wasn't feeling it either at that point.

I heard it gets better it's just a shame it's in the second half of the game.

I really want to get this still- I held off, hoping for a price drop.

I'm a huge fan of the series; I'm wondering if there is more backstory here regarding Kratos and his family? I really would love to see that.

The changes in combat could be a deal breaker for some, but for me I've always just enjoyed the adventure of each game- without really mastering a lot of the combat mechanics. Playing on Normal, and just seeing it through. I loved both PSP titles also, yet I seemed to have waited to play this.

omg up to chapter 24 and so far I've never used any of the special items/magic just spammed square and triangle, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING, combat is now so good.

It got a price drop on Amazon.com. $45. Get it. MP is a great addition. This one has the best sense of adventure and puzzles since GOW1. In fact the game does feel more like GOW1 than GOW2 & GOW3 did, but still has the big set piece battles. The story does offer some additional background on Kratos, but there was a lot more potential for it, and I feel like this was their major misstep with the game.

HAHAHAHA, wow. Square and triangle through the whole thing, I don't think i would of made it that far before getting bored.

Except they are the exact same as the old useless weapons of yore, they have little impact on combat. You do have a point that ditching new weapons all together and just boosting your blades was a good idea but the execution is bad. Aside from having different magic tied to the elements, I just used ice or fire through the whole thing, the game says Ice pierces armour but I never noticed a difference when I switched to them, enemies still ate my combos for breakfast then hit me. They're most effective obviously when you have your meter up but since you have to aim away from them then hit them with the end of your combo just to even get the damn thing filled, they should have made the elements more noticeable in terms of damage or style of play.

Also pretty sad to see there still is no patch, I've actually forgot that I was waiting to replay the game till the patch its been so long.

Oh yeah, finally got my profile working here, didn't take but 3 months!

Now first thing I wanted to do here in GAF was to praise newest God of War! I know there has been a lot of talk about sound issues, campaign being boring and combat system thrashed, but I have never understood these complaints. Okay sound problems during campaign did occur to me too, but it was pretty rare and lasts like one second.

Campaign was good, better than third one I think and combined with the MP this game reaches the best GoW title in my books. As for the multiplayer, it is the best MP I have ever played. I had my suspicions, but it totally blew me away, I just love it. Anyone else who likes the MP and would like to help SSM to make it even better here is link to the newest survey they've made about GOWA multiplayer. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/J998GVP

Anyway, it's good to be here on NeoGAF. Finally.

Ok, it's certainly getting much better. The way the combat works (filling up that rage meter to do longer combos) really sucks but the game is definitely much better. Could have done without the first 2-3 hours though.

When I booted up the game today, the game downloaded some files and apparently got updated (not patch v1.04).

Anyone have any idea what this update is about? There's no mention of it on the official homepage/blog.

Edit: nvm, it was an update that finally lets us acquire the pieces for the Barbarian Hammer and the Spear of Destiny in multiplayer.

Beat it on Normal and the game is great. I would give it an 8.5. The Audio is a real issue but i'm sure it'll be fixed VERY SOON ha. Since GOW 1 I wished for the ability to interrupt my combo and evade an attack that I know is incoming. I'm sorely disappointed again. Great game and a story worth telling. I'm definitely glad I bought it. Time for my second playthrough with cheats :p
