Well, decided to give my Minette from yesterday a companion piece... So much of Eliza's fanart seems to concentrate on BOOBS Blood "Goddess" stuff, but one of the more interesting things about her, to me, is her dual life. A secret, subtley hinted at, but kept in the shadows..

To be in the public eye so strongly, and for so long, yet to keep such a large secret hidden? She's gotta be pretty good at this. I hope this works into her in-play personality, and she's not just trying to sell "Ohh, I'm evil, EEEEEVIL!" all the time.

And the Minette too, since they're suppose to be companion pieces:

Indeed. It will be the best next week.

-nod!- She might have to swim through some Salty Waters, but I'm sure she can manage!

Since the winner seems to be a lock, I think I'm going to keep the same schedule and try to get some cool announcement art from the artists for the actual reveal, instead.

Seriously though, I hope the art in question ends up looking like some kind of poster homage like Peacock's "Murder-go-Round" and the others from the intro:

* Eliza: cabaret night show poster format

* Annie: TV show/toy commercial ad format

* Minette: restaurant ad/"try our specials"/"service with a smile" leaflet

* Aeon: religious art theme

Or, you know, just have every other character depicted chasing the winner carrying torches and pitchforks, with the exception of someone using a chair instead, and a huge umbrella filled with eyeballs further in the back.

Man the wait till sunday is gonna drive me insane. If it's Aeon or Annie, I'll be happy. If it's Minette or Eliza... well there's always character 2

And if the other is character 2, well at least I have Big Band and Squigly to look forward to :p

Don't worry, Minette will be happy to help you for all your Round 2 desires!

So, SG-GAF.

I think this was touched on a bit earlier with people saying the original 8 wouldn't make it out of a voting setup like this. So I'm curious--let's say the entire current roster was determined by fan-vote, excluding Robo-Fortune(to be precise, not counting half a character).

I mean that the cast is 8 now, and in a little over a year it will be 12. Who would be your ideal 12 from the full roster?

Mine would look something like this:

  • Filia
  • Cerebella
  • Feng
  • Talesin
  • Parasoul
  • Panzerfaust
  • Peacock
  • Painwheel
  • Valentine
  • Annie
  • Beowulf
  • Marie

It's a cast that touches on the Cirque da Cartes(?), Black Egrets, Anti-SG Labs, and Trinity factions, but doesn't explore any faction or their sub/parent faction(s) too deeply, while including 4 wild cards that are/can be involved with multiple sides (Filia, Beowulf, Annie, Valentine). The Little Innsmouth crew is absent, but I think that--for example--if a sequel had a heavy Medici Mafia focus, they'd go hand-in-hand with that.

It also covers a pretty robust variety of playstyles, and 3 Skulldudes.

Who would you want the game to launch with, assuming 12 characters from the start?

Hey, I explained my motivations. There are actually people I'd like to see in over that cast that I'd rather see in sequels, TBH.

I am too meta to *just* go for who I want. ;)

EDIT: Just for fun, if I only just picked who I wanted:

  • Minette
  • Feng
  • Molly
  • Issac
  • Panzerfaust
  • Adam
  • Painwheel
  • Eliza
  • Annie
  • Beowulf
  • Brain Drain

And I might swap Black Dahlia in over Molly.

That's too much work. :p

They kind of already ran a poll asking us who our favorite of the original 8 are, and if I recall correctly the top 3 were Peacock, Ms. Fortune and Parasoul. So those are the three I would expect to get somewhat far in a vote. I think Peacock would have the best luck out of those 3 if we're talking mainstream popularity.

Nah, you're good. I'd actually only take Double out of the current roster, because her implementation would be best left for when all the other characters are in.

So, adding another five in

Marie
Stanley
Andy
Beowulf
Panzerfaust

Gotta get rid of that unplayable boss. I think the four guys I picked bring a visual diversity to the cast that it needs.

Might just as well have the character sorter in the official SG site with the default characters included, plus Squigly and Big Band, I guess.

Ideally there's a balance between what the devs like, since they have to spend hours on it, what makes sense for the story/setting, what can get the interest of less invested players and what tickles the tasts of the more invested fandom... yet I bet it was tricky enough for Mike and Alex to reach an agreement when the project first started, let alone now that the public has paid to express its preferences.
Just remembering about how vehemently Mike's been campaigning against one of the characters makes me think they're still not quite on the same page (otherwise the character in question simply wouldn't have been up for voting, or at least not without a more solid gameplay plan), so tackling the peculiar whims of the public must be doing interesting things to that team dynamic...

Seriously, I don't care about Aeon, but isn't her thing the fact that her eyes are always shut and what she does see when she opens them is the canonical reality or something?

If that's the case, couldn't her playable moveset be restricted by spending meter to have her open her eyes to pick the moment she gets to "save" and "import" to a later moment of a fight, while a computer-controlled version wouldn't have such a restriction, having the whole fight to pick from or something?...

I guess I'm just worried about the day when Aeon and Venus do become bosses and Mike's attitude toward the whole thing is make a fighting game version of I Wanna Be The (Skull)Guy/Girl, only with even less concern about making the battles beatable, since he gives off the impression that only Versus mode counts as the "real" game and the rest doesn't matter, so the rules of the game can go out the window there.
Hopefully the results from the early poll help to discourage that attitude, if it's still lingering...

So, SG-GAF.

*full-stop* Oy. I wonder what we'd have ended up with. Probably with whatever had the best mechanics video, and that's about it. I have no confidence in the FG community ever voting in the weird old man, non-sexually-charged older women, animal-races, or generally off-kilter ideas that make fighters such an interesting character pool...

Looking at the story, I can't say I'd take anyone out. Even "Boss Marie" is a better solution than "posessed shadowlady version of Filia for the Skullgirl", or something like that.

However, bringing up "factions" gets my attention. I'd have loved to see the races and factions put into groups, and then have each group, 1 at a time, get a character. Example:

Circus Group: Regina, Feng, Hubrecht
Dagonians: Stanley, Minette, Yu Wan
Egrets: Roxie, Panzerfaust, Molly
Outsiders: Issac, Beowulf, Scythana
Unfinished Business: Annie, B. Dalhia, Eliza
ASG Labs: Brain Drain, Hive, Illeum

Etc.

It would have been great to have more to-the-point, limited voting pools, so that some of the characters that have almost NO chance of winning "popularity contenst" style votes in a 30+ man system, could have had a greater chance VS others of their group.

Too much fan control (Go ahead, pick the whole roster!) would probably just make a mess, but dev controled fan input (For the first quater, choose your the next B. Egrets member to join the cast!) could be great.

Please let it be Annie that comes out on top. This waiting is gonna kill me.

And holy shit at that Josuke Beatrix art. So legit.

*grumble, grumble*

The third round really was a killer.

Stanley, Beowulf, Feng, Mrs. Victoria
Stanley, Beowulf, Feng
Stanley, Beowulf
Minette

I really hope one of my picks makes it to the end next time. Or at least someone I like over the current Final Four, like Isaac, or Panzerfaust, or Black Dahlia, or even Umbrella.

Edit: To be clear, I do like Minette more than the other three in the final round, but there are a number of characters I would have preferred over her.

See you in SG2, Beatrix.

Nice Beatrix art!

I still don't understand the process behind the "sprites" after a year, but it sounded mighty impressive when a few gaffers and Peter had a discussion about it and they sure are amazing to look at.

If I remember right they're not really sprites, but actually textures, right? How they make them act like sprites though is a mystery to me.

who won? i didn't get an email update.

Noone has clearly won yet, to us. Ravi has mentioned that the votes are pretty much overwhelmingly 1-sided, though, and that a winner is known by him, but we won't know until the emails go out.

I like the pics of her that give her those Megaman / Astro-boy style non-ankles, just because the style fits her look so well.

And it's kinda funny how similiar much of her design is to Eliza... Same upside-down triangle central bang, both have pearls in their hair, both her long cloths draped before mini-skirt-ish designs...

Question: what's an "eff gee sea"?

Seriously, there's pretty much nothing over here. I'm not sure there's even a regular Street Fighter 4 meet in my city.

There probably is, but you have to find it. I didn't think there was a scene in Boston until Boston had it's first regional. Then I found out all the Marvel and Street Fighter players were playing at a Bar on Tuesdays.

Really nice palette work there, Mista Koo!

i hope Minette won. that's the only character i care about.

She's pretty much the only character of these 4 that I'd think would have a chance of NEVER appearing in the game /sequel, if she doesn't make it now. We basically have 2 boss characters and a near-necessairy plot point character as her opponents.

I don't see how anyone could doubt Eliza, Anne, or Aeon eventually making it in to a SG release, at this point, unless Lab 0 gets sucked into an alt timeline or something...

I'm no programmer, but I would say that since the PSone era most 2D games actually puts sprites on polygon textures, since it's just much more efficient to use the hardware acceleration than write specific sprite-handling stuff.

The thing we did that others haven't done much of was actually use that for shaders, lighting, etc.

Thanks. We should thank the guy who made the vector :p

Did you ever post the pic of the original palette with the shoulder correction?
Not ye..

Yes I did :3

(The original artist - I assume - was the one who said he will post it.)

For some reason I didn't like these aesthetically (the hitsparks and the like).

Thanks Vectorman! (...)

Not even the fact that the sparks actually effected the lighting, and accurately shade/highlight the model, as if it's a 3D object in 3D space? Because that stuff is a great trick:)

Watching the Argus Agony lasers fly over & swiftly highlight the bodied of fallen Skull-gals never gets old... (come to think of it, Big Band is going to be a stupidly-big reciever of corpse-lighting.)

Extracted this Andy from an official(?) artwork:

Hopefully that gains him at least one vote next round :(

That's the thing I don't like :p It is technically impressive but I don't like the way it looks.
Although to be fair I've yet to actually play the game, but I've seen enough videos to judge.

Indeed. So far, few NeoGAF predictions have actually come to pass, so I'm kinda holding my breath until we see the reveal. Pretty much no one here (including myself) thought this would be the final four. Yet here we are.
