Just odd how I didn't have it before but other people did. Like I said, though, it sounded like they were rolling it out per user. A weird thing to roll out, as it seems a client based thing not server.
Hey guys, I'm going on a long driving roadtrip soon and am looking advice on what to do with maps/gps for the iphone 5.
I was going to use apple maps/google maps, but I don't have an unlimited data plan and if I understand correctly, using apple/google maps for navigation will eat away at my cellular data, correct? Is there any way I can use offline-only on apple or google maps?
And if not, are there any apps that you would recommend that has offline maps? I really don't want to risk going over my data cap on a long drive.
Any input would be appreciated, thanks ^_^

Yeah, you're correct, both Google and Apple maps will eat data. Not a HUGE amount, but they will use some. There's no offline mode for either that I know of either.

Now I know that iOS has remained the same for some time now ("stagnating" to some), and that's fine. I l ow android has many more customisation features and of course more open allowing you to do many more things. That's fine.
A lot of people think they're stuck in apple's ecosystem, but they're really not. They don't use many of apple's strengths and features so there's really not much keeping them here.
But what I don't get is people just deriding on the iPhone and apple system when there are reasons to stick around. It's hard to explain, akin to why I prefer mac, but a large reason is that the entire ecosystem is something I'm actually heavily invested in. I use iCal, notes, iCloud syncing, iMessage iPhoto, photostream etc. I love integration and not having to wander from built in services.
I know most people don't really use an ecosystem to even close to its full potential, and that's fine - it's easier to move around like that. But for me, I do use a wide range of the apple technologies so that's a big part of why I stick around. It's just annoying when people don't get that.

So ive had my iPhone 5 for about a month now after switching from a 4 (easily my favorite phone ever which includes owning previously a droidx, droid, samsung whatever, blackberrys etc) and holy shit I had no idea my iphone 4 was so slow. I remember when I got the 4 a few years back the thing was lightning fast but after having the 5 I was blown away at the speed of apps and during browsing. Its also insanely lighter which I thought I wouldnt care for but its actually nice if you're holding it up for a while. I also bought my father a 4 since he wanted a 'free' phone with the upgrade and looking at it now it seems like a brick, albeit a really good phone.

If I wanted to make a wallpaper for my 5 what's the size? I just need to make the image that size correct? Nothing weird I have to do to get it to work on iphone 5?
1136x640 is the resolution, anything that or above should scale down just fine.

I currently own an iPhone 5, Galaxy SIII and Nexus 4. The iPhone is my 'go-to' device for day-to-day stuff (the others are used for more specific purposes), because it simply works best for me. Not only is there a synergy across the board that I cannot have to the same extent with Android, but I just find its general implementation of features suits me down to the ground.
Don't get me wrong, Android is great now. There are just a lot of people for whom iOS remains the better solution, and I happen to be one.
I'm looking forward to iOS 7's redesign immensely, though!

I'm pretty used to Android (I'm using Jellybean on other devices), so the interface and settings are all fairly intuitive, but I'm looking for a couple suggestions and betting GAF has all the answers. Apologies in advance for the deluge of questions here, I didn't read through the whole thread so some of this might be redundant.
1) Can I display sent files in by inbox (unified inbox)? Inbox seems to show them when I send from Outlook, but I have to navigate to "Sent Items" to see any emails sent from the iPhone.
2) Anyone have a keyboard app suggestion? Default is ok, but remember I was a physical keyboard neophyte... make it easy on me. I really like the BB10 keyboard, but I don't know if something like that is available for iOS.
3) Is there a good app for browsing GAF outside Safari?

1. No idea, sorry.
2. I also came from a Blackberry, and trust me. You will get used to a virtual keyboard very quickly. The keys are in the same basic spots as the Blackberry Bold I came from, and it took me a couple weeks to get proficient. About a month or so into it, I was nearly as fast as I was on a physical keyboard. Apple's autocorrect is very, very good.
3. Not sure why you would want or need such a thing. Go to m.neogaf.com, then hit the little pop out button (to the immediate right of the back/forward buttons), select add to home screen, and boom. Neogaf icon. Safari will save your login info as well.
4. This is another thing I stopped missing after the first month. Just have it buzz. The settings have all kinds of notification options. I think there's an option to have the camera flash for notifications, but I've never used it and am not sure where it is.
5. Don't go hog wild and buy tons of stupid apps you'll never use. If you have specific wants or interests, post here and you'll hopefully be led down the right path.
Also, start using iCloud for backups. Photo Stream is also very neat.

Really all I want is out of GAF is autopaging... I love not having to click "next page". Good advice on the apps. Outside of the usual (email, calendar, nav) I use apps pretty infrequently. I receive/send 100-200 emails a day, after 5 minutes the buzzing got OLD

If the phone is jailbroken you can enable autopaging.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? My phone will die overnight, and when I charge it in the morning and open Settings->Usage, Usage time and Standby time will be matching. What causes this to happen? I've since begun manually closing all apps, thinking there is a possible rogue battery drainer.

Nah I have no interest in jailbreaking my phone. If there are no Swype-like apps for iOS I'll survive, I was just wondering. It seems like it takes me much longer to type out messages now than it did on Android.
iirc Apple made an acquisition of a company that does something similar. Maybe expect it for iOS7.

I would try rebooting your phone if you haven't in a while. You're right that it's a sign that something is running in the background, whether it's a 3rd party app or a rogue system process.
Boo. It's a work phone so jailbreaking it isn't really an option...
By the way, is there any way to open single email? Every time I click a message it opens the full chain of emails, not just the one I click. It would be nice to open a single email with a single click, rather than have to click twice.

Turn off "Organize by threads" in the mail settings. Then each email will be shown separately in your email folders and not be bundled up by subject.

Then why do you even need notifications? You already know you've got new email every time you unlock your phone, lol. Personally I turn off all audible and pop up notifications, and I feel better about my device, not feeling like everything is an emergency.
I'm looking forward to ios7 and the redesign, but I'm disappointed that the Verge is implying there won't be widget/live tile functionality for apps. The home screen could use some liveliness outside of the notification center.

Gmail Push is not available for new iOS devices any longer, unless you have a paid Google Apps account (e.g. Google Apps for Business - and it's $5 per user per month or $50/user/yearly).
There are however some work-arounds one could use.
- Use the native "Gmail" app to solely push notifications but also set up your Gmail in the native iOS Mail client and use it to handle your emails (this would require you to have the Gmail app installed, not ideal).
The below method however is what I use on my iPad:
- Set-up auto-forwarding from your Gmail to another Email that supports push (e.g. your iCloud email). This will push all your emails seamlessly to your device. If you set up your Gmail in the native iOS Mail client in addition you can utilize your gmail.com address while using the iCloud account to reply to emails.
- Go to Gmail web interface, then to Settings -> Forward Account and add your iCloud email to forward all your emails to. I also chose to mark emails forwarded to read, since I don't use the web interface much.
- Setup Gmail on your iPhone like you normally would (skip if it's already on there). But under Settings, do not have it sync emails.
- Setup your iCloud account to send using your Gmail address.
- Setting -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar -> iCloud -> Account -> Advanced Mail -> outgoing mail server -> TURN iCloud SMTP server OFF and turn other SMTP servers on, choosing your smtp.gmail.com settings associated to the appropriate gmail account. HIT DONE.
A few things about this setup... When you go to reply to a message, it will show as if it's sending from your iCloud account, it does not. It is just using the settings you just set that are associated with the iCloud account.
This only works if you don't really use your iCloud account and you only need to reply via one Gmail account. I had several Gmail accounts, but only respond from one, so this is not a big issue for myself.
This tactic shouldn't be limited to using an iCloud account however and should be possible with other types like Outlook.com as well.

The new Mailbox app pushes gmails to me instantly, with the native app it would take a while.
I've also found that Mailbox is properly updating it's 'email count' badge in the background. If you archive an email in the gmail webapp the badge will appropriately decrease by 1 without you needing to open the app.
Only thing left to do to make it perfect is to clear the lock screen notifications if it gets read elsewhere, but I believe they're limited here by Apple's API.

Yeah, google were dicks and decided to cut out push for all non-android devices. You can be grandfathered in if you had it before, but as soon as you get a new device, the end. :/ Hadn't thought about using an icloud account that way, that should work quite well!
It's seamless, except if you are German, as push for iCloud is disabled there.
Hmm, went through that and sent myself some emails from my gmail account to myself (same gmail) on my laptop and haven't seen them pushed to the mail icon yet on my phone. I'm pretty sure I set everything up correctly. True push should come through right away, right? I sent them ~5 min ago.

I have an unlocked A1428 and it worked great in China (on China Unicom). I believe that both models should be fine though -- LTE isn't deployed yet in China, so really all you need is support for UMTS frequency 2100 , which will give you 3G speeds on China Unicom.

I don't know how you could get anything but anecdotal answers, but my relatively recent iPhone 5 has been fine. Some mild chip-away on the edges like every other phone but it has been absolutely flawless otherwise.

So I'm having trouble understanding the concept of phones locked to a carrier. Let's say I go to Apple and buy an unlocked iPhone for its full unsubsidized price. My understanding is that if I put a Rogers/AT&T sim card in there, the phone becomes locked to Rogers/AT&T and I wouldn't be able to use Bell/Verizon on the phone, or if I travel abroad, I can't find a local carrier and use a SIM card from there. Unless, of course, I pay the original carrier to unlock the phone for $50 (I know Rogers charges this).
Is this how it works? Or is it that if I buy an unlocked phone from Apple, it will always be unlocked and only the phones bought subsidized from a carrier will be the phones that are locked?

If you buy an unlocked phone from Apple it will always be unlocked. You could use it on any GSM carrier.
You could not use it on Verizon, though. Verizon only allows phones on their network that they have the IMEI for in their system (this is how CDMA carriers work, it sucks). Even if the unlocked phones have the CDMA chip in them (which I think they do) they will not work on Verizon.
On the other hand, Verizon iPhone 5s are GSM unlocked from the factory. So if you started with a Verizon iPhone 5 you would always be able to use it on Verizon or any other GSM carrier.
