Many Gaffers here missing business sense.

OF COURSE Last Guardian and GT6 should be on PS3. They are 2 expensive projects (especially Last Guardian) therefore you need a hell of alot more sales than what a newly launched console give you. This is a business guys and what makes sense money wise is to release those 2 games on Ps3, sorry.

TLG threads are like walking into Shenmue III or FFVersusXIII threads. Sad experiences but it always reignites my hope and belief of them coming out. Eventually.

I'm now 99% convinced TLG is a PS3 title, with 50/50 chance of a PS4 port. TLG isn't exactly a system seller though, i doubt it will affect the PS4 launch much.

I certainly think it would help the Hardcore jump on the system that much quicker.

If you look at it another way, Sony is still supporting older consoles - which they've always done. God of War II came out on PS2 months after the PS3 release. Same for Okami and a handful of other really remarkable games.

No trust me Sony's dedication to support their older platforms is something I have always respected of them, but its hard to argue that with all of the stuff coming to PS3 it makes a jump to PS4 alittle difficult to argue in favor of (for now). Its great from a consumer standpoint because it means that Sonys largest audience will still get games, but it could mean their most dedicated fans (early adopters) get shafted for awhile. Its a double edged sword.

I guess we will see where the chips fall in just a few days.

Yeah, so no games for PS4 then..

Please inform Sony about this ingenious business tactic...

What if the game is bad? Sony suddenly blowing the surprise, giving infos to retailers, makes me think this is just another Sly 3 they have to get out of the way with.

Selling a game on a console with a larger installed base seems like a smart business move to me.

Not to mention the costs of restarting development on an entirely new platform. Get real.

Where'd you get your MBA?

I can understand the logic for GT6, but are Sony likely to even come close to recovering 7 years of dev costs with this game? Surely the spotlight of being a launch game will boost the sales of a game like this and boost the status of the host console (assuming the game is good).

Ueda is still the "official" game designer for the game. He's still supervising the team in the same capacity as before. He left Sony to renegotiate his contract and be able to try new things.

With "official" i was meaning just the fact that him never leaved his role as Game Designers of TLG and, so, he never was a "non official" but i agree reading that way my post could mean different so i fixed putting "" on returned :)

That's my thinking as well. Seven years of development costs is likely close to $100 million USD (assuming 150 people full time making an average of $90K USD annually). They have NO chance of making back that kind of money for a title with a niche target audience. They have a better chance with it on the PS4.

So they have a better chance of recovering costs on a system that will start its userbase from zero at the end of this year instead of one with almost 80 million?

Establishing your new console and giving people reasons to buy it also makes business sense. But you are right, on the PS3 the game might have a betetr chance to make a profit.

It will help for sure, but the cost of a PS4 port + revenue from a PS3 release could fund another project that is built from ground up for the PS4.

Like many have said. Can they even recoup any costs on this game? Also when would it realistically release? Holiday this year is booked and the game would be sent out to die.

Spring 2014? If all goes well then the new consoles will be full steam ahead.

Cool, if it's coming out this year, I probably won't have much money for next gen systems, there are quite a few games I want to get on the ps3.

I think this is good news for people who has been waiting for this game, would be weird to skip it just because the game is coming out on a system it was announced on, right?

Establishing your new console and giving people reasons to buy it also makes business sense, you know...

Why should they establish a new console using games that should have been released years ago on the old one?

The new console should get its own games and identity.

Optimally they'd get it out this Fall before the next gen consoles arrive, if it's still a PS3 game. Is that realistic? Ehh...

Well, they won't recover the costs anyway, but most of TLGs buyers will be from the "core gamer" segment anyway, which consoles primarily target early on in their life cycles.

They have other games besides GT6/TLG.
If you are only going by sold consoles, releasing any game on a new console is bad business, and should be avoided.

"that was the joke" (tm)..

And not just to make money directly from sales, but to make the PS4 a more desirable purchase to core gamers, who are more likely to buy a game like this. GTA, MGS, GT6 and LoU all make sense to me for remaining PS3 games. TLG (if it still exists) would not.

More importantly, it was a game announced for the PS3. It should have a PS3 version. The same goes for Versus XII.

Business wise, releasing on both PS3 and PS4 makes even more sense, esp. for teams who release at the glacial pace that these two in particular do. Sorry.

Just noticed, if it releases for the PS3 and is one of its last high profile games then the game's name takes on a whole different meaning.

I think it'll be smarter to release it for the PS4 than the PS3 mostly due to a few reasons.

Namely that TLG has a niche audience judging from SoTC and Ico's sales. They aren't going to make their money back either way due to long development on the PS3. However with TLG being a PS4 exclusive, it serves as a major pillar release to the niche that wants the game as well as being a slowburn title for the PS4.

Rather than being a game forgotten as the PS3 slowly fades away, it remains as one of the most innovative and unique games for the PS4 that people will pick up eventually.

TLG is absolutely a system seller... and for those screaming for PS4 support, Kagari seems to think that both TLG and Versus have been moved to PS4. I expect both platforms to be supported, but if PS4 is the platform it explains why Sony has been keeping so quiet. E3 will answer a LOT of questions

I think he just wants him back at Sony. I agree.

I think it's in his best interest to go back. Sony owns the IP rights to the ICO universe and that's his baby. Would be weird if he wasn't on board for future Ico games.

Sony is also in a situation where they had a mega-star internal developer, and it's in their best interest to get him back. I'm sure Sony knows they can't make any more games in that universe without him. Backlash would be too strong.

I'm not sure this is really news because TLG has been up for pre-order at FNAC with mockup boxes for ages.
Although maybe there's still something to this because of the delay it seemed they eventually put the boxes away, and now they are be back on the shelves. Who knows.. ?

And where else will he get the artistic and financial freedom to do what he wants no matter how long it takes?

Do you have proof that's it's only 50 people? That would put the total development cost around $30-35 million. THAT is within shooting range of breaking even for such a title on the PS3.

The team has been gradually growing since 2005: 30 at the start, 40 in 2009, 50 in 2011. I do not know what happened after 2011 (and after the possible change to PS4 development) but I assume it stayed in that same ballpark figure. The game was in full production by 2011.

Yeah Sony has had the patience of a saint with that guy. Another publisher would have scrapped it years ago.

Oh shit is that some new art? Color me excited...

And then I realize it's going to run at 15fps like Shadow of the Colossus.

I don't understand the hype for this game. Can someone fill me in? The trailers don't really tell us much at all so are people just hyped because of this company's previous games?
