Microsoft cancels post-E3 media roundtable

This would suggest they probably won't have answers regarding the key questions (DRM, used games) by next week. Which means it's probably still up in the air with third party publishers.

All they have to say is "We're still having ongoing discussions with our partners to ensure we come to a satisfactory conclusion for our customers", or something along those lines. Instead of just saying "We are listening", but not actually responding.

They don´t want to answer difficult questions, like if clocks are downgraded, the OS of the conference being or not faked...

"What's actually in the box?" is a question I'm sure they're trying to avoid along with "So what is your plan regarding used games?"

They're not willing to answer the former and not ready to answer the latter.

More seriously though, maybe they decided to replace this with something else?

Maybe one-on-one interviews with journalists? Perhaps of a pre-screened, Polygon-al nature?

(OK, I guess I'm still not being entirely serious... but I do wonder if it's not just because they're doing something else)

Hmmmmmm. Bad news incoming? Don't want to answer hard questions before Sony conference?
Not bad news incoming. Just probably avoiding having to answer questions about the already wishywashy bad news we've gotten from them so far. They want to limit negative media exposure.

Basically - they have no confidence that they can sell this system being straight with people.

After the disaster that was the handling of the press and their questions after the Xbone reveal, not surprised.

My guess is that they don't say anything DRM related in the conference and just leaves the press addressing their questions to Sony instead, hoping Sony will get their share of the trouble.

Probably done in an attempt to keep the DRM stuff out of the news. It almost certainly would have come up during this.

So what, they just go on not mentioning it? They can't really risk having random figureheads like Harrison talking shit they don't want people to know about. That's why the roundtable would have been ideal to clear up those details.

My guess? They probably continue saying "We are still discussing possible plans and alternatives" or "Our used game policy is not concrete at this time."

I wouldn't be surprised if they did that song and dance up until September, honestly. I think they had a plan in place, what they were saying was met with bad reaction so they're trying to just sidestep it as long as they can.

They might have already made some promises to publishers, so maybe it isn't something they can go back on. Who knows. But there is no way they talk about a used game fee at their conference. No way. They're going to be very very vague, if they even bring it up.

This roundtable would have meant saying conclusively what the deal is. They obviously don't want to talk about it right now. So either they know it will be met with an extremely bad reaction that could "lose" them E3 in the eyes of the press and gaming community OR they're not sure how to proceed.

Funnily enough Nintendo is actually holding more events where press can talk with the devs and other people from the company.

True. But they still changed the rules to avoid having their press conference be compared with the other two. That's significant because it was the one area they were going to look really bad in. MS had to be impressed how Nintendo decided to control the message better. This is how MS is controlling their weak point. Refusing to acknowledge it.

No need for damage control and negative backlash over another event they'll probably fumble their way through. Way to build that confidence Microsoft!

All this is going to do is hurt them more if they dodge questions...it may come back to bite them later on :/

It seems they aren't prepared for the slew of questions they will have to answer.
