Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

It might not be up to Sony. The publishers may mandate it.

Even if they'll accommodate the big pubs that want it with some PS3-like method (small pubs may opt out if given the choice or if Sony does it PS3 DRM-style, I think, just like the small ones stayed away from online passes etc.), unless it was an online game (like an MMO or the online portion of a game), wouldn't it have to be a more roundabout DRM method rather than this since Sony's got a lot more markets with very limited internet, hence their already making sure to get the word out that internet is not a PS4 requirement?

Alright. Let's do this. Time to get personal.

I own 4 PS3s. I share games with my family. They have shit loads of account. I have friends with PS3s. We share games all the time. I don't share my PSN account nor are my friends in my PSN friends list (I like playing with anonymous people. Sue me).

This is completely against my play style. Sorry to say but I'm out. This is not about being a fanboy or a hater as I own a 360 and Wii as well and I love them all equally. This is about the ability to play without any interruption.

I stopped buying games that have 24 hour locks because me and my brother play in various accounts and console usually, and at times in the same day. I have a very fast internet connection so the always online doesn't bother me. Everything else does.

Sorry Microsoft. You just lost a customer forever. I hope Sony doesn't follow the same path or I'm done with console gaming.

I don't care how many games they have or how many exclusives they have. I will not support these anti-consumer policies. Thanks for clearing the air MS.

I hope the Xbone flops like a flaccid penis.

Well, that's one down. I'm not going through a bunch of hoops to play a game that the publishers don't feel I truly own if I've bought in on disc.

Daily check-in, all of these shackles placed on my purchase and I can't even loan or rent anymore? What has become of our beloved and formerly easy going hobby? Unacceptable on any level, if you have common sense.

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies

I can't believe they put this sentence in there. Are they trolling?

This is something fucked up, DAMN you Microsoft.

you didn't take into consideration that Gamestop, Ebay, Amazon may not be present in some countries.

Why can't I lend/borrow games from my friends.

This seems like a very very VERY deep hole.

Umm, this sounds pretty amazing to me.

This right here is how I will let people borrow my games, only it sounds to me like I'll also be able to play my own games at the same exact time as up to 10 of my friends and family are. This is fucking amazing, if true. Microsoft needs to be asked about this for clarification pronto!!!

My biggest concern about used games (which I don't buy) was being able to let friends or family borrow and play my games, and it sounds like that's completely addressed with this system. I'm a happy camper. There is only a restriction if you plan on giving someone your physical game disc. They have to be on your friends list for at least 30 days, and each game disc can only be given once. Microsoft also needs to be asked about this specific part here. Are they saying that they original giver of the game disc can not receive the game disc back from the friend they gave it to? Or are they saying that the original owner can only ever give their physical game disc to one person ever, but that the original giver of the game disc should also be able to receive that game disc back and have it work with no issues?

I, for one, am shocked that you're in favor of this.

SHOCKED.

So whats the guarantee that majority of publishers won't restrict me from letting my friend borrow it? Or letting me sell the game if I found it boring/don't like it?

None. This system is designed to allow them to do just that if they so desire.

This is stupid and just as bad as we thought. Can't believe people are OK with it just because it's worded differently.

I'm okay with it because it can let me do some great things now. For example, I can now give my friend in a different country a game I have, without having to mail it to him.

It's also great that everyone's games library is shared with everyone in the home group, and if I recall correctly, in the Reveal interviews, they said a single Gold subscription is also shared with that home group.

For me, the used games and internet connection requirement are not a problem. My internet is fast and stable (it went out for about 3 hours once over the course of 4 years I've had it), and the only times I've bought a used games is when my disc broke (poor LA Noire :( ). Considering the discs aren't even needed anymore, I'm not planning to buy/sell any used games. I'm a game hoarder who loves to get everything on Day 1.

Hey guys remember all those people yelling in everyone's ear against the torrent of anti-Xbox One posts about how we were all just commenting on speculation that meant nothing and wait until E3?

Good times, good times.

Now that we know it doesn't matter jackshit what games Xbox One gets at E3 thanks to it being the worst console of all time, it really does free up my time to pay attention to Wii U, 3DS, Vita and PS4 more closely.

THE FUCK OUTTA HERE JEBAILEY!

Also what qualifies as friend vs family? If I just have my friends listed as family... they can just enjoy those games for free can't they?

"Any one" of your family. No way they'd allow 10 at once.

Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

How is "family" defined and technically detected?

Could this mean that you can share your game's in your local WAN, similar to iTunes Home Sharing?

And like i said, if a company like EA follows suit, you bet your bum sony will. It's an unfortunate demonstration of corporate entities trying to maximize profits.

I'm sorry, but I buy used games and this isn't going to work. There are tons of games that I don't play until months after release and I can pick up for $10. I bought Demon's Souls a few years ago for $7. With this going on, it looks like that will not happen again.

Why not? If its a public market and we can set the prices ( think eBay ) then it could be alot better than going to game stop.

Hell you wouldn't have to go anywhere .. Get a scratch free digital used game at anytime of the day or night.

Sound awesome to me.

There is no guarantee I don't think; I believe the default is no borrowing actually so you'd be out of luck. No lending games, and no giving them away unless you know the borrower and it's a one-time thing (they can't give away). As for game sale, I'd assume that you'd be restricted from trading in for the first 60 days by most publishers, as that's the window where used games really hurt them.

This sounds awesome!

but Microsoft is being too nice. I can already see the exploits. I can already see Little Jimmy adding his friends Kyle and Kenny to his "family" on Xbox, now instead of all 3 of them buying Forza Motorsport 5 to play together, Little Jimmy, Kyle, and Kenny just split it up, pay $20 each and all play the game using one copy at the same time, thanks to the "family" system.

Horrible. Hope Microsoft has a system in place like "Family" can't play games at the same, unless everyone owns a license. That was Turn 10 isn't screwed out of 2 more potential sales, or worst case scenario, 9 sales.

Q for all gaf members!: Would you support a system licensed by microsoft that lets you RENT GAMES digitally from their servers for 10$ a week.

Just like blockbuster or rogers.

SO you can buy the games you love, and rent the games you wanna try out?.

I think it would be brilliant.

The fact that there was even 1 positive reaction to this is kind of depressing.

As I've said before, blind brand loyalty to a corporation who could care less about you as an individual is the epitome of stupidity.

So, I got GameStop, Microsoft and Activision's permission to trade Call of Duty: Ghosts. Now, the final test.... ma and pa.

Wish me luck.

I wonder how this is going to work in household without permanent internet connection. I bet those geniuses at MS and EA never thought that far.

Astonished by the number of people in the "it's not that bad" camp. How could it be much worse?!

You are kindly permitted to give your game away to one person, knowing that you can never have it back. Wow, thanks Microsoft. I know I should be grateful, but not half as grateful that people in my living room can play on my console too! Woop woop! :/

Thread's amazingly fast.

So if I understand the "family" thing right, you + ONE person on a list can be playing, and up to 10 people can be on that list. Interesting, although I still don't get the "family" designation.

For those who are saying not as bad as expected, I REALLY wonder what you were expecting. This seems to be consistent with everything we've learned so far, within a workable framework.

I'm amazed at the people who think they'll be able to designate their friends as "family". I bet that the other person will have to have the same billing address or maybe the same last name in order to qualify as a family.

From what I can tell the things that have improved:

1) No disc required to play your games regardless of purchase method.
2) If part of a family plan (which cost $$$), people can play your games.

Everything else is worse than currently, and far outweighs the good side of 1) and 2).

On a second read this sounds worse than before.

Whereas before it sounded like resale would be permitted universally, albeit through Microsoft's drm-ed up system, it now sounds like there are two possibilities: not allowed at all, or through that same system. Depending on the publisher.

MS not taking a cut on trades is a concession, but there'll still be a fee to be paid by retail, to publishers. Business terms are between pub and retail.

Well how about that. Microsoft finally addressed the issues in clear and concise fashion.

Now I'm definitely not buying the Xbone.
