I've always liked Jack Tretton, both as a person and speaker. He's 2nd on my list right behind mr. Iwata.

To pick an absolute favorite Sony series is difficult, since many of the series that have appeared on Playstation have also appeared on Nintendo or Microsoft systems. But, if I'm choosing one that has been largely Sony exclusive for much of its life, my choice would be the Klonoa series. It's the closest Sony has had to Mario and Kirby. I really hope against all odds he will return for an all new PS4 or Vita adventure, I thought Klonoa 2 was especially creative and loved most of the music in that game.

Close behind would be Parappa, another series I'd like to see return, either PS4 or Vita. I especially liked "Final Party", the last song in Parappa 2 where the DJ and Parappa sing. Whoever voiced the DJ did an outstanding job.

For the first year in several, I'm actually off work the days of the Sony and Nintendo stuff. I can catch Sony's presser live here at home, but my home connection is getting more uncooperative, so ill catch it late Monday night when ill have access to a fios connection which will have no problem with it. If pre-orders for PS4 open on Tuesday though ill do that on that day regardless!

Klonoa was definitely another awesome game I loved. Man, I love sidescrollers. Hopefully with the emergence of the PS4 Japanese devs will get to releasing more awesome games again, since it is much easier to program for than the PS3. I'm sure will see some cool indie stuff from Japanese studios anyway since they are basically letting them do it free.

Holy crap. I'm really interested in Dying Light after watching that. The trailer does a good job of selling the cost of existence in that scenario. Good stuff.

It has a damn good feel for it, right? Just hope it doesn't turn out to be a Dead Island scenario with the trailer. But certainly nudging me into pre ordering the console.

I honestly think that's more than enough for a great launch, don't forget all the 3rd party titles too. Sony needs to save some strong 1st party for Q1 2014 when release lists tend to dry up for new systems. The last thing they need is a Wii U situation with a post-launch drought.

Interesting, good point. I do think it's a great launch of first party titles, but was just wondering if there would be anything else.

Guess we'll have to wait and see! Looks like there will be a LOT to play on PS4 come this holiday.

No. Because nobody wants a wiiU, they'll just get a PS3 or XBOX360 and pretend the wiiU doesn't exist.

I doubt that will be the case after their E3 Nintendo Direct. Unless you have no desire to play any of their franchises, a Wii U will look like a pretty good complimentary system to go with the PS4/Xbone once Nintendo gives us games they know we'd want.

A Wii U by itself, now...that's another discussion for another thread, sure.

  • Return of Japanese games/genres in places other than Japan.
  • Expansion of Sony 1st party studios
  • Artsy games get more exposure
  • Free online play becomes standard
  • bar raised on whats offered behind paywalls
  • MS shareholders pressure MS to focus on area other than games
  • Increased probability that Nintendo becomes the 2nd console
  • Sony has a hard time being dethroned again

You know, a Sony-controlled market doesn't sound too bad... at least for this generation.

Who knows what kind of crazy bullshit they might try next gen though.

PS1 = Gran Turismo
PS2 = Gran Turismo
PS3 = Uncharted

Overall favorite = Gran Turismo. I haven't played The Last of Us yet, and looking at the reviews, it looks like the kind of game that might disrupt my favorites list.

Well, it is Valve we're talking about. They seem to have sort of power to keep everything on lockdown these days. Pretty much went full Xanadu since Half-Life 2's code leaked.

Yea, Valve + Sony though. If the partnership doesn't involve publishers, then I could see it staying hidden.

You might be onto something. It could be a big Steam partnership between Sony and Valve for PSN.

It depends on what the relationship they have have, not to mention what they have planned.

Hell, with all this talk of DRM/used-games stuff, we haven't really heard anything official yet be it through leaks or usual insiders. We hear loose terms about them likely doing something or thinking about doing it.

Sony has done an admirable job keeping things pretty locked down.

These have been my thoughts recently as well and why it is rather disappointing that MS dropped the ball in terms of the policies on the system. If Sony doesn't screw it up, then they are poised to dominate, but that might also mean a potential lack of competition which is arguably why the PS4 is looking so good right now in what Sony is doing with it.

Just like Sony, a meaningful loss of marketshare, can bring about course correction. If it doesn't outright kill it, they'll come back hungry as well. These companies don't learn the lesson until they feel the pain. Its an opportunity for them to learn, grow, and reevaluate.

The final question:

What is your favorite PlayStation game or IP?

You can only pick one.

Hm, currently either LittleBigPlanet or Demon's Souls.

Last gen it was Shadow of the Colossus.

Wait, do you mean SCE IP or PlayStation in general? If it's PlayStation in general, then throw Metal Gear Solid into the ring (though I've kinda tired of the series after the emotional high that was MGS4 - never beat Peace Walker).

Just 48 hours left...!

All I wonder is how the market will look if PS4 has 70-80% market share...

Like the PS2 era. Believe!!

I know this will never happen, but if ND came out with a HD Crash Bandicoot by wrestling the rights back I have no idea what I would do.

Crash has to be my vote.

Damn. The first game was an underrated classic on the Genesis. Such a shame we'll never see another one in the series.

God I sucked at that game...Get 3 or 4 fights in, lose and go back. Only chance we had of seeing the finishers was when the CPU did it to us lol. Larcen.

It does have a good feel for it. When he was on the ladder, the girl died and there was both that moment of regret but the awareness that all he could do was keep going, I actually felt for them. When everyone was dying along the way, it was such a gong show (in a good way) and it was neat to see how the rest of them just put the blinders on and kept running.

Dead Island came to my mind as well right after watching the trailer but, we can hope when Dying Light is released, it's not so great of a disconnect from it's trailer like Dead Island was.

I remember it being pretty difficult. The best part of it though was just how awesome the stages and characters looked. If there were any fighting game franchise I'd want to see revived, it's that one.

We need GopherD or Kagari to inject hype into this thread for the last day. Tease us anything.

Yeah, and ask him if that Steam comment was a joke or not.

Honestly Sony would have to colossally fuck up for me to not get a PS4 at launch right now. If their DRM policy is anything better than the current X1 policy, I am in.

I worry that if Sony goes through with DRM that the DRM stuff on Xbox One will get worse over time. It's all software at the end of the day, so they could always tighten the DRM as time goes on. I honestly think that the cloud stuff they keep talking about is a way to get people used to always on for all games, SP or MP. If they push hard enough on this point they can eventually say "you need the cloud to run this game at all", kinda like Sim City's always-online DRM.

One of the main reasons why I disagree with those who make comparisons to Steam. MS is not Valve. Those discounts, the level of control, monitoring, is not the same. Every company isn't made equal.

The reality is that for Sony doing what MS did would be an even bigger mistake than $599. $599 was when Sony was attempting to target more than just gamers. Go back and read some of the early quotes about that console. It's very clear that they didn't think that price would be a hurdle because they were no longer simply targeting gamers.

If there's any truth at all about their repeated statement on the PS4 being a console for gamers, then it can't resemble the MS strategy. MS is going with that because much like with Sony and the PS3, they're no longer targeting just the gamer. They're thinking that they can expand the market by making a console that does a lot more than just play games. Sony doesn't have that luxury. Sony doesn't have anything to fall back on if gamers turn their back on the PS4. Not that it can't do more than just play games, but that's not what they're marketing it as. They're marketing it as a console for gamers. It's completely obvious how gamers in general feel about this. It's not something that you can talk your way out of (which is probably why MS cancelled so many interviews at E3), and it's not something that you can get out of by showing some nice games. And that's because doing this screws gamers as a whole. It's not something done to make a platform better for gamers, it's something purely done for money and for publishers. And the gamers are simply the people that suffer as a result.

Uncharted.

If you're the type of gamer who never cares about diving deep into understanding how much the system offers, then it won't ever make a difference; you'll probably still enjoy it as a generic action game. All you need to see are these:

I never delved into the DMC combo systems at anywhere near that level (total scrub here), but the DmC systems didn't seem too bad to me in comparison either. A quick youtube search turned up these vids which seem to be OK and still well beyond my abilities:

Cross buy between Steam and PSN would be something so awesome it clearly cant happen. Sony and Valve would lose profits, developers would lose out on double dippers.

Still could you imagine.....

Pay $15/month and access PS4 content through Remote Play/Gaikai to your PC and Vice Versa with Steam content streamed on to your PS4. Titanfall comes out for PC in Spring 14, remote play from Steam to PS4. But that's almost too good to be true.

joshcryer

it's ok, you're all right now
Here's what I'm thinking. The Steam -> PS4 thing is that if a dev makes a game for PS4 the APIs will already be compatible with PC, so Sony will have a PS4toSteamAPI.dll type thing that allows the game to be instantly ported to PC (if it doesn't use PS4-centric assembly level optimizations obviously; which most indy devs won't use or need for that matter).

This will enable indy developers to instantly port a game that they got on PSN to Steam and the partnership would be even better if Steam agreed to allow any PSN title to go to Steam, and not have to pass Steam's rigorous process of "what is good enough." Basically the PSN label would be enough for Steam to accept a game.

edit: to expound further, most Steam games would work on PS4, if they were *nix based. Since Steam recently adopted *nix you could, in theory, have the opposite way to port games, but I think it'd be easier to go PS4 -> PC than the other way around, especially if you're not doing low level optimizations.

That's a lovely dream.

Very good points, though I doubt that Sony will try anything stupid like that again, especially when they had such a hard time getting the PS brand back on it's feet with the PS3 earlier.

But if they even try to do something like Microsoft did with blocking used games/DRM, etc., then most people will reject the PS4 & Sony will be forced to close down their gaming division as a result. They don't even have any backups to offset whatever losses that they make this time around because they already spent up just about every profit that they made from both PS1 & PS2 just to keep PS3 afloat, & most of their other divisions are bleeding red ink as it is, so PS4 can't afford to be another Vita in sales. Otherwise, they're fucked.

So for their sake, they better be for the gamers like they promised that they will be, & not be for the corporations/big named 3rd party publishers.

All I wonder is how the market will look if PS4 has 70-80% market share...

I think the more interesting question is if Nintendo and Microsoft, and Sony too for that matter, all flounder, will that leave the market open for a another new console manufacture?
SEGA... :)

Personally though I think if the major console companies collapse that the arcade market will make a revival with systems like Oculus Rift.

Wait so what is our course of action if NeoGAF
goes down most of the day?
Is there somewhere we can go?

Twitter and IRC I guess.

AFter all the the punishment...i'd probably still pick it up...Street Fighter 2: Championship Edition, Killer Instinct, and Eternal Champions...good ol' days.

We have an open "wifi" at work. If I could buy a vita and connect back to my PS4 during my lunch breaks that would be fucking incredible. I'd insta-buy a Vita.

Depends on how the firewall is though. :/

Worth repeating in all these threads, the déjà vu is strong when you compare the attitudes like that. Sony really didn't think the price of the PS3 was bad because they only saw the value of the other stuff and knew how expensive the tech in the box was. But gamers couldn't see any tangible benefit to the CELL say so to the consumer it was simply an overpriced game console that could play blurays (which few ppl had or cared about until Planet Earth).
