Battlefield 4 Stream

The PC version that my buddy was playing at E3 he said it was skipping anywhere from ~30-45fps @ 1080p. If a "beefy" PC can't do it, and yet somehow consoles can, that means there have been cuts made on consoles somewhere along the line in order to do that, especially with 64 players.

The game is in a pre-alpha state, though.

Yeah I should've added that. And I wanted to - was going to also add, and I'm sure it will not be indicative of it's final build quality.

Not to mention they were apparently loading it through command prompt (DOS).

Bit disappointed in this.

Love Battlefield but this just feels like an expansion, with Commander mode (something that should already exist). Where's the evolution of the franchise? It's just more of the same with little tweaks.

I hope they fix the tracers before launch. From first person it looks like you're shooting lazer rifle. I know it's an effect to make the game look cool, but (in real life) the shooter cant see the tracer as it leaves the barrel, or much at all for that matter.

It does look like an expansion from Battlefield 3, but separately it looks like a great game independently.

If Battlefield 3 is the 'cost' needed to get a true, large-scale Battlefield game, then fair enough.

Is there a video that shows the tracers? Also, I'm not sure it's accurate that the shooter can't see tracers--part of the purpose of tracers is so the shooter can adjust his/her shots based on the trail.

Finally someone who talks real facts.

As much as I'd like it to include some drastic changes or brand new game-changing modes, I think BF is kinda at the beginning of the path CoD has gone down: incremental refinement that slowly pushes the game towards a specific vision, without changing that vision.

I still think it's way too early to judge, though. I still think the Commander functionality (that is, playing without being "in-game") is fucking awesome, and I hope they implementation "levolution" (lol) seriously in all their maps.

What would you guys like to see added that would make it more of an evolution?

It's always going to be BF 3.5 to people, realistically (except for better destruction and a new era), what else could they add to convince people it's a step up? Nothing much.

BFBC2 type of destruction where we can level down the entire map.

In that case, it's way too early to tell. I liked being able to level the earth in Port Valdez, but BF4 feels like a different scale even compared to BF3.

EDIT: Next stream announced:

Live, unscripted, 64-player multiplayer from the E3 showroom floor!

The action starts today at 12 PM PDT.

So you say the same to the mario kart, marios and 50% of the sequels that are released also?

I can definitely see this opinion coming from PC players but for those of us who played BF3 on consoles and are buying the next gen versions of BF4 it's a massive update. 1080/60fps/64 players is a huge deal compared to sub-720, 30 with drops, and 24 players.

This is going to sound awful, but I'm hoping that the 24-player versions of the maps get the short end of the stick when it comes to balance and design. It was clear that 64 player versions of the vanilla BF3 maps were half-assed; since next gen is the "lead" platform, I hope there will be more consistency in the design and balance.

Exactly. This is going to be incredible.

I can't help but feel a little disappointed too. I was expecting just a little more this E3. Commander mode looks interesting but that was already done in BF2. I don't know what else can be done to the franchise at this point to freshen it up. Maybe a change in setting? I would love to go back to the WWII era.

Big improvement over the console games, minor improvement on PC. Was this game confirmed to be 1080p60? I know it's 60fps but 1080p?

The only way I see them actually "revolutionizing" Battlefield is expanding the scope and meta-game. Don't think that's going to happen anytime soon, though.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but since battlelog is going multiplatform.. Has there been any word if they are moving it into the game for the PC version? I never really liked the webbrowser solution that BF3 had.

MOH: Warfighter had in-game and in-browser options, FWIW.

I don't say anything about those games because I don't care about those franchises.

I'm talking in the context of the Battlefield franchise, this is the first time when I've thought that a new game could justifiably be an expansion. In fact I think a lot of the changes in this were tried and tested in previous expansions. The combat on top of the Shanghai skyscraper looks very similar to Close Quarters, for example.

The general combat loop looks identical to Battlefield 3. Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 2 played completely differently to Battlefield 3. Hence why this time around it feels exceptionally incremental.

I would've loved to see them debut a new mode that's as ambitious as, say, Titan mode, but instead they just showed 64 player conquest. We've had 64 player conquest forever.

Even the UI and menus look too familiar.

So cut out the defensive 'would you apply that criticism to other sequels' nonsense like I'm unfairly judging the Battlefield franchise. I love Battlefield, and for the first time I feel like DICE are being lazy.

Kind of hard not to laugh at all the "meh, looks like BF3.5" comments. I'd rather see them play it relatively safe and not stray too far from their core formula versus changing a bunch of stuff for the sake of change alone and winding up with a situation like we have with Halo 4.

Next-gen console players are getting feature parity with PC players. That's a big step forward in and of itself.

I get what you're saying, and yeah, I am hoping for some big new additions. However, I think comparing the combat to BF2 and the Bad Company series is misguided. Infantry combat in BF2 was godawful, and Bad Company was inferior to BF3.

With BF3, they actually have a really solid model for gunplay and combat. They don't need to change it, because it's already great.

Keep in mind we still haven't really been shown anything related to sea combat and how that impacts the game. Still crossing my fingers for some big changes, but given that next gen consoles are the focus of this year's E3 and 64-player battles is brand-new in that regard, it doesn't surprise me that they went the "safe" route.

Don't give a crap, it looks like they are fixing what was wrong with BF3 and that's just fine with me.

They tried new modes and such with each DLC pack, but whenever they stray too much from the original formula, people get up in arms. BF3 suffered from being held pack and finally it at least looks like a return to what people wanted. Bad Company games had incredibad gunplay and BF3 was a huge improvement, once they get to a sweet spot, they should leave it as is and work on different aspects.

We still have sea combat stuff to see which is going to be something we haven't had really since original BF.

Absolutely. It took DICE a long, long time but they finally nailed gunplay in BF3. The vehicle gameplay has consistently been ace but 1942's and BF2's infantry gunplay was pretty terrible. 2142 showed some improvement, BC1 went back to trash and BC2 started to turn it around. BF3 however is the pinnacle. I dont even think it could get much better outside of some tweaks to suppression. I love how it still retains the hardcore recoil management and bullet drop.

One thing to take note is Rush, Conquest, and now Capture the Flag variants will probably be in EVERY BF4 map from launch - as opposed to CTF only being in the final BF3 expansion's 4 maps. This will add tons and tons of replay. Im confident BF4's Rush will add some new tricks and maybe even have some 64 player Rush variants. I wouldn't rule out some brand new modes either - DICE is known for being tight lipped on new stuff when its early. Having 64 players on all platforms is a big deal.

I was watching a replay of yesterday's live stream. I'll see if I can get you a video. That's true... for larger weapons, 249, 240B, .50, etc. Not really for Rifles unless you're shooting at night. Either way, the shooter can't see them leave the weapon, they see a light downrange, which I know is tough to portray. When you see it in game, it's basically a line coming straight out of the barrel, and it doesn't look like that in real life. When you shoot full auto it almost looks like a Star Wars weapon.

I'm nitpicking a bit, and think the game looks great overall. I love Battlefield. If the hit detection gets touched up, I'll buy it regardless.

Wait, people are disappointed? As somebody who was disappointed in BF3, I can't believe how much stuff DICE has done for BF4. It's held back by being a cross gen title, but there are so many new great things. Really enhanced destruction (that parking garage, damn), Commander, Spectator mode, 5 man squads, suppression fix, a smart way of dealing with vehicle disabling, no ammo pool (reloading a half fired magazine makes you lose all of that ammo), and not to mention a much better sense of scale (not boring/flat urban environments), more support for swimming/sea combat, and most of all, 60fps and 64 players on next gen.

It's clear that they realized what they fucked up on in BF3, and have really listened to the community on a lot of hot button issues for BF fans. They are aiming to please, and it's working.

DICE did way more than what I thought they would. Can't wait for it.

Thanks--it would be good if you could get that feedback to them. Zh1nt0 on twitter used to be the DICE dev to go to, but I'm not sure if he is involved with BF4 as much as he was with BF3.

Lemme know if you can find the vid, curious to see what it looks like!

I kinda hope they scrap the whole squad assists = kill thing. I know, squadmates can steal your kills but it feels a little strange to get a kill without killing anyone... You still get squad assists points.

By the way, the stream is back on 35 minutes.

It's definitely strange and I'm not sure that I like it, but getting those 99 or 100 point kill "assists" was pretty annoying, too.

I'm really curious about the netcode/hit detection. Has anyone heard if it's improved? Not that E3 is the best place to gauge that sort of thing...

someone should bring up the changelog list compared to BF3. It is long and does not just look like an expansion to me.

I am too lazy to list everything that has changed.

Two scopes at the same time will add more dynamic play.

They also mentioned in an interview you can use your side arm while swimming, so you aren't a sitting duck now when in water.

Here's a decent Vid of real life, you can see how the tracer becomes more visible as it goes. It's not a mile long line, like a laser.

It only happens in the multiplayer portion, so it may be something they are trying out, or something else. They definitely look cool, just not very real. I've also seen them leave smoke trails. Some guns do it more than others. It's pre-alpha, so maybe it's no big deal.
