Is Gamestop warring with Microsoft?

So I was under the impression GS and MS had some kind of agreement going for the used games thing but it might not be as cozy as it comes off. I went to my local spot today to try and find a copy of PGR4, only to see on the TV (which usually markets various upcoming games) a bunch of footage from Sony's E3 conference. The footage however continued to put emphasis on the lack of DRM and selling used games over and over rather than the games. The employee also has hand outs explaining all the Xbox one rules and restrictions to every consumer that ask about the console.

Anyone else see anything like this? Would be an interesting situation if it's a wide scale thing. I think the more pressure on them the better, but I wonder if I just have a lone fan going postal or if GS is going to remove focus on the system.

they're the ones who will have to deal with the returns from ill-informed customers, so they're trying to get ahead of things.

Funny, The guy at my gamestop didn't attempt to sway me to the PS4 at all.
Processed my X1 preorder pretty quick.
We actually ended up talking for a while about E3 and the different games.

The other employee of the two was super stoked on a certain PS4 game, but neither mentioned a single thing about DRM or trades.

Could be that other gaffer earlier was right and its just a matter of the clerks in the stores I go to in Ireland being woefully misinformed, which can Happen with the idiots that call themselves gamers over here. Apparantly if you play a facebook game you can be called a gamer over here. Fucking ridiculous

Can't believe that many people are pre-ordering the XO lol.

I'm getting it because I want to play Dead Rising 3. Halo, Forza, and Titan. I will purchase all my third party stuff on PS4. I always have internet and have never been without it. If My internet ever goes out I will just play offline and when its time to check in turn on my hotspot check in and get another 24 hours or I can play My PS4. As far as used games go I really dont care since I buy digital whenever possible.

How do they restock a console that has no physical units made yet? It's probably still available due to cancellations.

I think that's how preorders work; Gamestop "orders" a set number of units, consumers preorder that set amount. If Microsoft still has more stock after gamestops numbers have been taken, gamestop can "order" more to sell.

I think you guys are over estimating the power of gamestop. This isnt 2005 anymore. Many people will preorder online and even through the 360 dashboard.

This is a delaying tatic for gamespot. Nothing more or less. There will still sustaintial X1s sold this year.

The real battleground is next year when the launch adopters dry up.

By then the WOM will be pretty widespread. (in an ideal world)

The only thing they did to me at gamestop was to try and get me to pre order a extra controller for each system. I know they always try to push stuff on us, but this had a extra weird vibe to it. He was like "You need to get another controller we are only going to have like 20" "Are you sure you dont want one its best to at least pre order it"

Well, you have to remember there are 36 million X360s sold in the USA vs about 25 million PS3s.

Just goes to show how badly MS has screwed up with Xbone.

One thing I don't understand is why MS is going to completely give up on Europe. All the inroads they made with 360 are about to get obliterated.

MS has to see this coming, they cannot launch under these circumstances. The XBone is not the PS3, things wont get better for it. If it bombs at launch, there is no potential for a resurrection especially considering the PS4 will going all in at the same time. They have to hit the ground running and somehow manage to carry the momentum, if they tank now Xbox is in real danger, once mindshare has changed just doing good enough wont be enough to pull you out of a hole, they would have to go back to hoping Sony fucks up again.

They have from now to November to sort this shit out or they are in deep shit

This reminds me so much of 3-D TV. The companies tried and tried to push this as something we had to have. Problem is no one wanted it or asked for it and it has been a massive failure.

Now MS promises infinite cloud power and a fancy cable box. Nice ideas but ideas few have demanded. On top of adding things people have not asked for they have stripped the system of things many find important.

This entire process is a complete failure for MS, but the lines have been drawn and the money spent. This time next year MS will have some very pissed off investors and they deserve all the hell they are getting.

Even if they reversed course tommorow they are a company I can no longer trust and won't be for quite a while. I can't see myself EVER buying an X1 now.

The real test for Microsoft is not North America, where it still can succeed. The real test will be Euroe. I feel that Sony has a chance to dominate them over there...
Nothing is set in stone of course, as the formidable Microsoft marketing machine could always break many wills. We shall see...

Of course GS would be pushing the PS4 over the Xbone. One is threatening the very lifeblood of their business, the other isn't. Pretty damn simple.

Patriotism is one hell of a drug.

Or maybe Xbox catered to western/US gamers and by doing that built up loyalty in that market. But I'm sure you'd rather believe people buy them stick them in their living rooms and chant "MERICA!" Sony made great pieces of hardware and have some great software development teams that made some great games. But MS brought service oriented applications to this industry. Sony was able to copy, catch up, and in some areas even improve upon them. But to act like the only reason that people in the US would by the system is blind patriotism, is just fucking stupid.

Gamestop and other electronics retailers fighting for life at this point. Gamers making a stand in defense of their consumer rights. Yet, a digital future is inevitable.

Gamestop will realize a similar fate to Blockbuster. Best Buy to Circuit City and Comp USA.

The transition may be slowed momentarily but, it will not be stopped. Archaic business models and unrealistic expectations. Nothing more, nothing less.

Everyone knows this. We are under no delusions that digital isn't the future. But when a company tries to jump-start it like MS is doing and fucking over consumers in the process, you bet your ass there's going to be a backlash, so don't trot out that aloof smugness thinking you've said anything important.

Keeping that fanboyism flame alive one post at a time.

Fanoboyism? go look through my post history if you want to throw words around. People who supported MS this gen are getting burned hard. If you can't see where my anger and the anger of others are coming from then i guess you must be on of those drm supporters. I have a 360 that i purchased early on in this gen's cycle and the majority of my 3rd party games are on it. Bought a PS3 when Demon's Souls was released and have a great amount of exclusives. I suppose you're right that i do come off as one but MS policies caused that and i'm not trying to hide it.

From all I've seen and read and talked to, from around 200 people ONE (how fitting) has said to buy the Xbox one (and only because he buys both).

It's DOA in europe. Hell it's DOA anywhere but in america.

Hang on a second, I didn't make anything up White Knight Mgee and yeah Master Chief Avatar who cares, you have a dog in a suit drinking a martini Big whoop wanna fight about it?

First, it's a cat in a tuxedo drinking a martini.

Second, yes. I want to fight about it. I want to have a no-holds barred streetfight with you over games systems. On the internet. You have insulted my honor, sir.

This is a joke, BTW.

Now the next thing you say is that I am saying Microsoft isn't to blame, thats not what I said, I said they're not entirely to blame. Yes Microsoft went to the Publishers about it, but what stopped the Publishers saying no? Microsoft can't put forward a console without games.

So Microsoft "isn't entirely to blame" even though they came up with the scheme in the first place, because the publishers didn't say "no?"

Wow...you. Wow.

The only way I see the check in system being a problem is for people with no internet connection for whom yes I feel sorry for, but still it doesn't affect me, so it doesn't bother me that much

You're a great representative of the modern Xbox One apologist.

Personally I like the cloud, the way Microsoft are implementing it isn't the right way in my opinion, but its still a good idea.

Meaningless.

As for Kinect, I never even mentioned that and don't care either way, first thing I'll be doing is covering the mic and camera anyways so I don't have to use the bloody thing.

If you do that, enjoy the screen telling you there's something wrong, and asking you to re-calibrate your Kinect. Because that's all you're going to get for applications that require it if you try that.

Now for all the effort you put into saying I made things up and twisting what I said so I looked like a moronic fanboy it could've been put to better use offering a less patronizing response.

I really don't have to twist anything you've said. Nor did I. You're doing fine on your own.

I'm not a fanboy, I simply like the system itself. I don't care about the DRM because I have an internet connection, I agree its a horribly implemented system that simply will kill the Xbox One until they take it away months after the system launches (hopefully) but still, it won't affect me, so I'm not going to take to the internet to blindly put the console down when aside from the DRM issues it looks like a pretty slick console.

And yeah I do doubt it, Publishers have been shoving bullshit DRM features down our throats for years on both PS3 and on X360, this next gen isn't going to be any different no matter what Sony says, they only way they've got it better is their lack of the proprietry bullshit microsoft have on the Xbox one.

I'm buying both consoles by the way, before you play the fanboy card, I'm a fan of both systems, but there are flaws with both.

I didn't use the word fanboy once. I may have called you an apologist, which is based onn nothing but the contents of your post, which is an accurate assessment. I personally have no problems with people who admit they are pulling for one system or another. I find honesty admirable.

When I said people might give you shit for the Master Chief avatar along with the contents of your post, I was joking around. I think you protest too much.

All I did was disagree with your strange assertion that Microsoft wasn't entirely to blame FOR THEIR OWN POLICIES which they created, and which they presented to publishers. I also found it curious that you have come up with a prediction that you "seriously doubt sony will be able to deliver everything they said about lack of DRM," which is completely baseless and only seems to exist to tick every box on the "Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt" checklist.

I can't believe MS is just letting Sony keep their territories like this. Do they not see that Sony is going to push hard in the US this gen. this could all change later though. But the terrible DRM and supported country list make me doubt it.

Gamestop sees the writing on the wall, so they are doing their best to stay alive for as long as possible. All digital is the future, and good luck with their business plan in a world with no trade ins. People may as well resign themselves to that fact now.

Can we not do this? Dude has been perfectly civil and unlike someone else in this thread, is far from a shill. What happened with his sister is bang out of order regradless and we shouldnt let our dislike of the X1 make us lose perspective.

I personally would be looking to curse someone out if that happened to someone i was close to as well. Even if they wanted a X1.

If Gamestop is fighting a war with the Xbox One, they're doing a bad job. They didn't even send out an "PRE-ORDER THE PS4" email yet they sent out a "PRE-ORDER THE XBOX ONE EMAIL." They advertise the Xbox One more, and they don't have a "Why we're excited for PS4" section.

Gamestop is just informing consumer of what the system does, so they are informed and are in the known, because legally they have too. Don't want a family with no Internet buying the Xbox One, or misleading consumers that might be upset and return the system.

Literally all my Xbox 360 friends are switching to PS4. This is going to be much bigger than Sony's shitty PS3 launch back in 2006. At least back then Sony had the advantage of saying "we are more expensive but we have blu ray" What is Xbone's selling point other than "we are 100bucks more expensive and here is DRM up your ass"

MS apologists are the best though. Keep the dream alive guys!

Do they? Lol I just checked the page once to see. Huh. Didn't know that. Either way, still doesn't explain why they have no "Why we're excited for the Xbox One!" page but not a "Why we're excited for the Playstation 4!" page.

Also why they sent emails out for the Xbox One but not for Playstation 4 telling you to pre-order. Unless it's just me that didn't get a Playstation 4 email.

Really doesn't seem to me like Gamestop is having a war with Microsoft, just they're informing customers so they don't get screwed over because they didn't know they need Internet for the system, or something.

Hell the fuck no. Digital is the future, but it is a future in the distance and the phasing out will be gradual. Any attempt to force it now will be and IS being met with fierce opposition. Until ISPs get their shit together DD-only is not feasible.

GS's pressing of the PS4 is not going to be official. It's going to be exactly as everyone has reported so far: at the employee level, word of mouth. That is a far more effective way to push the PS4 than paid adverts on a web, and there's nothing MS can do about it really.

They need to do more and bring this online too. No lies nor propaganda, just a list of facts about the requirements and restrictions this system imposes which gamers will not be used to nor would they expect. There has never been a single console that requires internet connection to function, nor that blocked free sale of usd games.

2 PS4 related ads, You missed infamous Second Son

The thing is the day 1 launch PS4 is sold out here so it cant sell anymore to fill that first place roll. Secondly, look at the top selling games. The multiplats are PS4 versions.

Oof, the PS camera is outselling Forza? Yikes.

The last time a console launched and everyone was only buying the console and no games, it was called the PS3. Because only flippers and scalpers were trying to buy one to sell on eBay, and they didn't need any games for that.

The fact that people are putting in a lot of PS4 game preorders in addition to PS4 preorders means they are buying their PS4s to play them, not flip them. The fact that people are only preordering the Xboned and not the Xboned games means they are buying the Xboneds to flip them, not play them.

This should be just a tiny bit concerning to MS. The last thing they want is selling out the launch shipment and seeing them all appear on eBay and then when they don't sell there, the scalpers just return the consoles unopened less than a month later.
