I had a good laugh at the whole Tamura segment.

No, that's Haibane Renmei.

Personally, aside from a couple of episodic stories in the first half, I didn't find much meaningful out of Casshern Sins' aimless melancholy.

Haibane Renmei is good but I don't think it deals with religious philosophy as overtly as Casshern Sins does. To each his own I guess

As a general question to the thread, does anyone have any recommendations for really obscure anime? I mean anime that is obscure even for the regulars here, not like Mushishi or Serial Experiments Lain or whatever

So, if I liked Date A Live should I definitely watch Infinite Stratos?

Infinite Stratos suffers because its MC isn't endearing or entertaining as he's a dense motherfucker, and most of the main harem aren't cute or memorable at all. You should only watch it to realize that Date A Live does these things much better.

Attack on Titan 11

Dat pacing. At least ep 10 had badass talking of all things. This doesn't really have anything other than the last minute, which should prevent people from dropping the show at least.

K-On!!

Good show. Not Hyouka good, but still damn good. First season is a more expensive Azumanga Daioh with less jokes. But with the second season there is a subtle shift away from the yonkoma gag humor to a proper slice-of-life format, in that everything is no longer teleologically oriented towards the gag in each scene. The humor is still there, but it evolves naturally from the girls' circumstances. There's less artificial set-up for one-off jokes and more straight up chilling. I think K-On depicts how someone fondly reminiscing about the past would see things, with no struggles or negative experiences standing out. The expiration date that the second season places on the nostalgia in the form of their graduation adds a good deal of emotional weight as well. Marathoning this was like a nostalgia bender.

People harp on the fact that the music component of the show is constantly in the periphery but, while true, I thought that the few times the show fixates on the music were exceptionally well done. I liked when the characters were aimlessly playing their instruments without a particular song in mind. It conveyed the exploratory dimension of music well imo, better than most anime at least. KyoAni good qual animation (esp. in capturing the nuances of body language) plus god tier incidental music equals a good show. It's a good show.

I don't think I'd agree with you on how the first season is more gag comic like, but I'll say the second season does take a more laid back "slice of life" approach. The second season is much more slowly paced when you consider that the first season goes through two years in 14 episodes while season 2 goes through just one year in 27 episodes. That said I agree that I like season two more.
Did you watch the movie as well?

Fucked up characters ARE fun!
Maybe Im just weird.

They are fun depending on how they're presented. I love them all, whether over the top or not.

Still, Hunter x Hunter's oppressive atmosphere makes the villains more creepy than fun imo. I don't really know if you would like it, especially if you're basing your interest off of a character that doesn't appear until 80 episodes in. No shortage of fucked up characters before that, though.

Yeah, I've heard Infinite Stratos is god awful. From the sounds of it, I'm not missing anything.

Gag comedy is an exaggeration. First season wasn't bad, but there was definitely a step up in quality going into the second season.

And yeah the movie was great even though the retconning was a bit weird at first. Kyoto Animation Domination

Went through mine too at his mention and thought to myself most anything decent wouldn't be so obscure in here. That said, the old Sanrio stuff doesn't get enough love.

Haibane Renmei had a more thoughtful exploration of sin, guilt, and the unknown beyond than Casshern Sins did.

I don't know how obscure you're looking for, but here's some ideas:

Ani*Kuri15
Anne of Green Gables
Aoi Bungaku
Barefoot Gen
Chie the Brat (film)
Fireball/Fireball Charming
Horus: Prince of the Sun
Iria: Zeiram the Animation
Jewelpet KiraDeco!
Master Keaton
Twilight Q
Yurumates 3D

Android Announcer Maico 2010 is really adorable. So is Goldfish Warning. hito would agree.
Also Mahoraba Heartful days is a romantic comedy of sorts about an adorable schizo girl with 5 personalities. Penguin Musume is hilarious parody cuteness. Nobody talks about Iria: Zeiram the animation so Ill throw that one in there too. Oh and look up Studio 4C stuff. They are amazing.

Yeah, I've heard Infinite Stratos is god awful. From the sounds of it, I'm not missing anything.

Well you'd be missing out on Charles. shes worth seeing.
But I could just link you to her best scenes and theme song which would negate having to watch the show.

Tomodachi wa Mahou
the last of us -

Solid writing, beautiful art and sound design. Stumbles early on and is hobbled by its insistence on forcing up the bodycount to comical levels. But there's a point in the latter half of the game where everything just comes together--a perfect confluence of great level design and narrative stakes--where it hits true greatness. Never hits that high again, but that's fine. Druckmann-sama won.

Just finished it myself. Glad to see your apology post!

Gotta keep up the hipster cred eh? Off the top of my head the most obscure things I can think of are Here is Greenwood and maybe to a lesser extent Haunted Junction. I can't say I really recommend either, sometimes things are just obscure because of how middle of the road they are.

And yeah the movie was great even though the retconning was a bit weird at first. Kyoto Animation Domination

Wait what? Retconning? I only watched the first season and never ventured into the second but what could they possibly have felt the need to retcon? I just...I didn't think you could do that with SoL moeblobs.

Yeah, Haunted Junction really wasn't memorable or worthwhile.

Well I think it depends what "religion" we're talking about here. Haibane Renmei seems more modern and protestant influenced, whereas Casshern Sins draws from Catholic/Counter-Reformation styles of art. The effectiveness is debatable but the philosophizing in CS is way more discursive than in Haibane.

Also I'll be sure to check out your list, only seen Twilight Q out of all of those.

Thus ends Actiongun. Not quite as packed as the last episode, but that hilarious midpoint in the battle was worth it. Some good cuts again.

I really hope they can wrap up this arc in the next two or three episodes, but gut feeling and what I remember of the manga tells me that it's going to go on for at least four or five more. Meaning two things:

a. They're not getting to the festival arc, which makes me wonder just why they introduced Misaki in the first or second episode, and

b. The rest of the second cours will be entirely cute girls doing cute things.

Bleh.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack Part the Second

I can't decide if Quess' character exists to mock Char fangirls in general, or if she's a pastiche of self-insert Mary-Suetypes. Also, "Newtype? More like Mary-Suetype, amirite?" But seriously, Quess is horrible. Also, I really, really miss Judau and Kamille. So much so, in fact, that I feel like I never realized until now that I really sort of have fallen in love with UC Gundam. Zeta felt like such a burn, and I can't just forget the terrible pacing and overused plotlines, but at the same time, I think I need to rewatch it without watching the awful dub, and more to the point, even knowing Zeta's faults, I don't know. I know that before I started watching this, I was prepared to rank it lowest of the 3 (MSG, Z, ZZ), but now? I dunno. I just feel like even at its worst it left a good, memorable mark. ZZ the show was still better than Z, even if the Z Gundam was the better mech.

Eh, it kind of is a bad thing for a boy to be in a battlefield, Amuro. Remember how much you hated it as a kid? Remember how it
didn't cost Katz his life. What cost him his life was being a stupid moron.

"I do hate violence" says the guy who started a war. Uuuuuuuuuugh. Queeeeesssss. How are you managing to be worse than Rekkua, Fa, and Beltachika combined in a fraction of their screen time? Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuughh. Quuuuuueeeessssssss.

"It feels like people are coming into me!" Waahahahahahaha. I'm sorry, but Quess isn't even attractive. Why would you consider betraying Char for that ugly brat? Kay. So. Char x Nanai is definitely a thing. But people say he's into young girls? Sounds more like a dirty rumor spread by jilted lovers who couldn't get over the fact that Char can't get over Lalah.

Hot damn Char flat out manipulates the girl, then comes to have a stern word with his not-Glemy Toto. Who you callin' an Earthnoid, Quess? THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME IN SPACE YOU STUPID DOUCHEBAG. Hoooooooooooooooooraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Suddenly Chan is become the best love interest Amuro has had since Sayla Mass, and she pulled it all off by
killing goddamn Quess.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand then Bright Noa's son is possessed by the demonic spirit of Katz. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

If the rest of the movie is just this amazing final duel between Char and Amuro, I will be quite happy. Preeeetty sure that dropping an asteroid with the intent to trigger a nuclear winter is the definition of "planning to change the world," Char. LOL CHAR'S "SABER" IS WEAKER THAN AMURO'S. Honestly I wouldn't have made this joke but Char had just stabbed the Nu Gundam's crotch, soooooo . . .

OH MY GOD EAT YOUR HEART OUT HEERO YUY AMURO GONNA DO THIS THANG WITHOUT A GUN. Okay, Quess did what she did because she was a moron. What happened to her was neither Amuro nor Char's fault. But wow at these two going on about Lalah until the bitter end. All this would be well and fine if Zeta Gundam had never happened, but since it did, I'm stuck wondering what caused Char to get so upset again.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA
AMURO SAVES THE DAY THANKS TO THE MAGICAL LETTER T. AHAHAHAHAHA.
WHAT DOES THIS MOVIE EVEN. NOTHING IS RESOLVED. OH GOD NOTHING IS RESOLVED. DO THEY LIVE OR DIE? WHO KNOWS. NO ONE. NO ONE EVER KNOWS. WHERE IS KAMILE? WHERE IS JUDAU? WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH.

The movie is about a trip to London that occurs chronologically before their graduation during the show even though it's never discussed within the show. idk if that counts as retconning

Also thanks for the recommendations everyone. Gotta keep that backlog growing

The London part is not retconning. How they came up with the final song thingy was retconning.

Well they do have the OVA episode that is basically the set up to the movie with the girls getting their passports, but you can't really fault them for not knowing they'd be doing a a movie and that it would take place in London. It's not something that's in the manga anyways.

Yeah, it's not a big deal. Graduation ep was so good I didn't mind seeing a different take on it

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaww yiss. Mothalovin' Anna not only beats Worst Girl Lou, she gives Goh the world's biggest talking to AS she trashes the blade of the guy who bested him. Waifu powah, suckas. Insania virus all over the place, and Mira having a break down because now she's losing to the waifu, even though Shizuru is the Best Girl. And now a bunch of space monsters are getting intelligent, and now things are about to get hella dicy.

Momou appears! Our masochist dog god! and glorious naked Tittyko is our reward at the end.

I forgot what point was where Ichiko basically changed her entire outlook, I don't think it was right after truly befriending Ranmaru (I think I got that right, it's been a while since I've read it). But god damn, picking up a tub and hitting someone with it consecutively. That takes massive skill.

Holy balls of fire, that man's face when Kirito mentioned soy sauce. Oh my gosh. To be fair, after 2 years without familiar American flavors I was pretty ecstatic to get some, too. Hahaha, this old guy takes Kirito down a few hundred pegs right in front of his wife, and basically saw SAO as a way to go fishing while at work. Like the cut of this nutball's jib, I do.

Oh damn, Kirito and Asuna share a bed now. When did this relationship upgrade happen? I can't believe I'm saying this, but Kirito's development from The Lonely Beater into the Wife Beater (HAHAHAHA I DON'T KNOW), er, rather, from a loner to someone who does care about finishing the game and getting people out actually does come off as decently done. And while I'm not a huge fan of remembering that Kirito and Asuna look 14 and 15 at the moment, their pillow talk at least looked natural, the way it was animated.

Lol, this fishing episode is actually pretty light-hearted and funny so far. I'm legitimately enjoying this episode. Someone kill me before I wind up liking this show. Man, as a 13 year old I would have eaten this Asuna explaining why she loves Kirito scene UP. Now I have to ask: when does Kirito return the favor and explain why he loves her?

Cecil tells Rosa to get the fuck off his Lunar Whale, even though she has proven herself capable of defending herself, too. Rosa tells him to shut up.

You know, honestly, Asuna's side of this relationship is pretty good: She's explained why she loves him, that she loves him, she was the one who wanted to run away for awhile, to get hitched, to have sex, and her crying that she wants everything to be for real is honestly not that badly written. The reason this romance isn't working for me is because Kirito isn't reciprocating anything. It's like Asuna fell in love with Plank from Ed Edd n Eddy. Kirito isn't bad at expressing his feelings, he's just not showing any at all.

Which I think, really, gets to the heart of the issue of Kirito's entire character. Where Asuna has been developed, and we've seen her development, and has had a chance to express herself and have some substance, Kirito is still a very empty character. Aside from his shift from selfish asshole to guy who cares about the game, there's not much depth to Kirito. He kinda reminds me of Prince Sneasel, from Code Geass, in that respect. He feels really lacking in anything.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IT'S KLEIN AND KHAN BASILIO!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally, a boss fight. I'll say this for the show: it's environments are always visually interesting.
