Speaking of which, what is with the eternities spent installing? Its like 40 minutes to an hour for each of the games I've installed recently. And these are digital downloads.

I'm pretty sure you're downloading compressed archives which must be decompressed to install. The larger the archive, the longer spent decompressing. I've read people say tha the 360 and iOS do the same thing, only they disguise the decompression as part of the download. Have no idea how true that is, but hey, at least we know the PS4 aims to fix this.

Installing the 1.7GB Dragon's Dogma demo took me close to two hours, and another hour to delete it afterwards. That certainly was... an experience. #PlayStationMemories

Several people have sworn to me that this process is considerably slower if things are downloading at the same time.

Alas, I have never had the patience to actually test this out, by downloading and installing something twice, funnily enough.

But people swear it is true.

Definitely true from my experience.

Will PSN+ do these installs during its patch/update window? If not automatically, is there a way to configure it to do so?

I wouldn't mind it nearly as much except that you can't do a single thing while an install is going on. Sucks to get messages from friends that you can't even respond to. You're just completely dead in the water until the long running process finishes.

But hey, if I can just leave it to the PSN+ maintenance window that works for me.

The one thing I do not like about PlayStation Plus is that all those games take up so much space. :p And that the download speed usually is only 1 MB/s, maybe 2 MB/s.

PS+ will download and install patches automatically. You can use the web store to set it to download a game as well.

You would remember. I have spend over 200 hours getting them on two platforms. Greatest challenge of my video game life.

No joking. With friends it is epic. Give it a shot. If you need a buddy then feel free to add me.

Sounds good. I'll come searching for you after I make a couple more dents in this embarrassing backlog.

But will it install the games themselves? Downloading can at least be done in the background and doesn't turn your PS3 into one big progress bar. Installs do though.

Forgive the basic questions - I'm new to PSN+ and its been a while since I spent quality time on the PS3. :)

Anyone know why it won't let me download Battlefield 3 (11.6 gb) when I have 27 gb free on the system? Keeps giving me a not enough space error.

Because you'll need double the space on your HDD initially. So space for the download and space for the install. Then it'll delete the download file after install.

Edit: beaten.

Also, has the EU PS+ IGC been updated?

At 29 gb free, still a no go. This is getting really lame.

Edit: 33gb is still not enough. WTF is going on. Has anyone actually been able to get this game on their hard drive?

Look, if the download file is 24gb, you'll need ANOTHER 24gb. Think about it this way, when you download an install for your PC, you'll need enough space for the install exe and enough space to install it. So to have BOTH the exe and installed app on your hdd. Afterwards you can delete the install file.

Jesus.

Thank goodness i set my PS3 to download Uncharted 3 before i left to go to work. It was on the final 5 GB of the F2P multi, which i guess stands for the base game at this point.

They really should have broken out the download at the start. I deleted way more than i had to to make room for this stuff because i didnt know the 3d cutscenes and spanish language pack where separate which saved me like 13 GB. i would have been stuck downloading them had i not had to go back to my download list and see them separated. Now an hour and a half into installing everything.

If this is the next gen digital future now that blu rays are standard, I maybe out of it, except for a few key stuff i never want to switch discs for. I can handle it on my 3DS because the sizes are reasonable, but this...next gen playstation plus will be brutal for my HD and connection.

I think the Plus games and sales have been great. BF3 isn't really a game I'd buy, because I'm by no means some competitive FPS player, but sometimes I get the desire to play a few rounds and this will be perfect for that. Same with Mortal Kombat. I'm not very good at fighters, but sometimes I like to break from action/RPG/adventure type stuff and play something more "intense."

I get that people don't like online to be behind a paywall and I can respect that but damn... the service is so good that I just personally don't care. If Plus got worse and started to slack off into something not as exciting, I'd be a little more apprehensive. So hopefully they keep this up as long as the service lasts and well into the PS4 generation.

The download size is 12gb, settle down and read sailor.

While I appreciate the attempt to help, the game is listed as being 11.6 gb, not 24.

It is absolutely insane that you need over 30 gb to download this file.

Should I buy Mortal Kombat to backlog or wait for possible PS+ freebie? Haha, it's so cheap but damn I don't know if I'll get around to it right now.

That really is weird. It isnt part of some bigger package like Uncharted is it and the 12 GB is for just one part?

Anyway, have you tried re starting your system after all those deletions?

Yea, tried restarting, didn't matter.

What I think is happening is that store is actually forcing you to download two copies of the game. Once I got up to 42gb free, it finally went through but put two different BF3's in my download que, each at 12gb.

I did some quick checking and I don't seem to be the only person this happened too, but I'm curious if anyone else here had it work that way. Anyway, I removed one of them from the queue and finally have this game downloading. Took one hell of a purge to get to this point though.

Edit: I should add that I don't think it's an Uncharted situation, since both BF3's in the queue were listed exactly the same, and the store just lists it as just 12gb. Either way it's pretty weird.

They might still be separate parts. Ni No Kuni does this too.

I think it is a store bug right now with the 2 downloads of the same file because it did it with me for BatmanAA and Battlefield 3, two of the exact same files where downloading had to cancel the extra ones. It didn't do it for Prince of Persia: FS download though.

I'm starting to feel like I should get a Vita considering all these free Vita games I'm getting. (and in preparation for PS4 I guess.)

I did a quick check online and I see a used WiFi one for 150€, is that a decent deal?

That's a great deal. I bought my Vita for 239€ and haven't regretted it even once.

Yes it will sir

I never DL big games, just set it and DL a bit
Then turn off PS3 let PS+ do it overnight,
Wake up with new game installed

How does it work though?

When i go to settings to do the auto stuff it only gives me options for set times eg. 1400-1600. So if i set my PS3 to start downloading t 3AM in the morning will it keep downloading and then install till its finished or will it start at 3AM and only go for 2hrs then stop and shut itself off again?

That you even need a gigantic hard drive to not have to juggle games just highlights how terrible the current gen consoles deal with downloaded games. Whereas with Steam or Origin, you simply have a list of all the games you own and can click on them at any time to install them. No need to keep games you want to play in the future installed right now. I probably keep my steam folder under 20GB at all times and I have way more games there than on PSN/XBL. On the consoles, it's scan your way through a giant list of unorganized content, download, and install. And because it's so unorganized and annoying to find your content, you just want to leave it downloaded, which takes up way more space than necessary.

You know what's dumb? Downloading and installing a game to be told you have to download and install a patch when you fire it up for the first time. Get it together Sony.
