Should Naughty Dog buy themselves back from Sony?

Seeing as how TLOU managed to sell over 3 million in 3 weeks on just one system I think it goes to show that they have the name power that very few developers hold. They could potentially sell twice as much going multiplatform. I know Sony gives them plenty of funding and resources but just look at Bungie. Activision seem to be doing all they can to put Destiny on the map. I'm sure a major 3rd party publisher would do just as much for ND as Sony can.

I never thought it could be possible until Bungie managed to do so. Why don't we see more 1st party developers leaving exclusivity? Course only the cream of the crop will survive in such a dog eat dog environment but come on, ND? Yeah they would be huge!

Absolutely not. They seem content with their Sony partnership, especially going into PS4.

They really don't need to and wouldn't gain anything (IMO) by doing so.

Absolutely if it makes business sense to them. If not then I am sure they will stay where they are. Pretty simple economics.

Yeah if Acitivsion got their hand on them we can finally get a Crash Bandicoot game. That would be worth the departure from Sony alone.

It just depends on whether or not they have enough freedom and resources to do what they want.

So probably they're fine right now.

But this thread is going to fill up rather quickly with annoyed answers like "are you crazy" and such.

Sony's not evil.

They have a lot of liberties with Sony something Bungie lacked with MS, I'm pretty sure Uncharted or TLoU would have been totally different games if EA or Activision published them.

Bungie bought themselves back because they were not allowed to make anything other than Halo. Do you really see EA or Activision funding Last of Us with as much money Sony pored into it?

Happy sure but is Sony holding them back from an even bigger market? That's the question.

Are Naughty dog ( and there games) console seller games that would be a big part of the Playstation experience?

Yes, yes it is.

Naughty Dog is very important to SONY.
Sometimes being selfish is what has to be done.

IMO, I wish there were no exclusives and just 1 big powerful console with SONY/ MS together, but that will never happen and maybe for good reasons, since competition is needed. ( or release all console exclusives on the PC too :p)

And about Bungie and Destiny, sure it has a large budget and support, but it is still a relatively save game.

MMO FPS with similarities to games like HALO and does what the typical gamer is into now a days.

TLOU on the other hand is a lot more of a risk ( as well as uncharted)

If they wanted to make a shit ton more money, they should, and anyone here who denies that is crazy. But, I guess they really are just content with where they are now.

Sort of TLoU spoiler, but no other publisher
would've green-lit the ending to The Last of Us.
So no.

Also, why would Sony sell? If ND were unhappy, management would've left and poached talent a while ago.

I can understand the OP's reasons for wanting to be "your own man" again. The founders or whoever would probably have to come up with the funds themselves for the offer to Sony. I'm not sure how Bungie did it.

I would have loved a PC version of TLoU, and would have paid 60 dollars for it.

They are talented enough to spread their wings and get on more platforms.

If the developers wanted to leave and start their own company there is nothing stopping them. I would imagine any contract they had to stay with the company expired long ago.

Why...why would they do that?

They clearly have the freedom to do whatever the fuck they want and they are good at it. They could go multiplat and sell more copies, but also not have what I'm sure is crazy backing from Sony if things don't go well for some reason.

Theres really no other publisher out there that would give them the creative freedom they get at sony.

and theres no way in hell sony would give them up either. they've become one of the best studios in the industry.

Honestly, I think naughty dogs style of game would only work well on Sony consoles simply as any other publisher would try and have more of a hand in what they make next.

I honestly think as a independent dev, they would be making uncharted 4 for Sony and generic shooter X for multiplatform development. A game like TLOU only comes from a carefully cultivated relationship between developer and publisher that goes beyond "your last game sold X units here is your budget for game Y"

Yoshida isn't stupid like MS. He's not going to force ND to do projects they don't want. Given the status and cash cow ND has brought to SCE WWS, Yoshida is doing the smart thing and is giving them a lot of creative leeway.

What so they can get into a more restrictive publishing arrangement where execs are watering down their ideas and they end up with a generic trash product like Fuse, and are up shit creek without a paddle?

Being exclusive allows ND to make the game perfect for one system. Sony lets them do what they want. They wouldn't get that form a 3rd party. Do you think Activision/EA/Ubisoft would ever have green list TLOU instead of U4?

Why? To make more money so they can make big budget games? There doesn't seem to be any serious limiting factors at the current stage.

Why don't we see more 1st party developers leaving exclusivity?

Because to do that, the owner would have to be willing and somebody else would have to have enough money. Unless Sony was getting out of the video game business, I don't see them willing to do that.

Talent could always leave, though, and they have before.

ND can finally unleash their skill without worrying about tech holding them back.

If cloud gaming hits the mainstream, they'll be able to do that with Sony.
