Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | July 2013 | Slow Month, Fast Games

More mechanics gets introduced over the course of the game. More persona combination options, the ability to craft weapons, social links etc. more interesting skill cards and all this, but it really depends on how much you like jrpgs. Jrpgs are in their nature, repetitive (like a lot of other genres), so if you think it is getting repetitive in the first few hows already, maybe this genre is not for you. Mind you, P3P may take upwards of 70 to 90 hours to complete.

I can stand JRPGs I love dragon quest and final fantasy (besides XIII), it wasn't really the mechanics of the genre it was the lack of different locations and slow beginning. Is everything in that tarturus building and the one city? It just felt very constrained but then again I only played a few hours. The story and characters seemed great.

Yes, it is mostly just tartarus, but it is split into sections, and the aesthetics of each section is different. There are several other locations but they are mostly shorter diversions.

so basically owning a 2nd Memory card is useless unless I have a deep digital collection?

I was hoping for swapping with someone else to let them play my games and get trophies.

this is pretty much a no-go on digital downloads?

Does tartarus become for all intents and purposes different dungeons? Its 10 bucks it can't be that bad

Buy PS+.
Another reason it's worth it -- it's the only way to back up ONLY your save file.

You can use a work around with Content Manager. where you can cancel the backup operation after it copies the save file to your PC (and you copy it out of the directory) but if you do this, you still need to back up the whole game first to restore it.

True. But if you're interested in cross-buy, odds are, you have a PS3... ;)
I just bought the digital versions of both games so I got the digital Vita versions free.

oh. it is $20 on PSN too?

Just curious if the new FIFA for VITA is actually bringing any meaningful change or is just a roster update. I am not a die hard FIFA fan but only play it occasionally. Would love to have a handheld title that i can play a few matches either online/offline. If FIFA 14 is just a simple roster update for FIFA 13, i don't see the reason to buy the new FIFA 14 instead of getting FIFA 13 for cheap.

Given EA is releasing nothing other than FIFA on Vita (no more Madden) I'd assume it's a roster update,

So I'm atop the challenge tower at floor 300 in Mortal Kombat and am getting my ass kicked!

My Baraka can inflict some good damage but these are tough enemies, any tips or character suggestions? I just want to clear this thing!

Playing Persona 2: IS. I gotta shake this stupid feeling that bugs me that I won't be getting trophies playing it. It's a plague on the mind, I tell ya!

Not really, it just looks different. All the dungeons are randomly generated. And it isn't bad. I'd dare say it is my favorite rpg in the last 7 years or so. But I haven't played P4 mind you.

So Dragon's Crown is out in Japan already.

http://gematsu.com/2013/07/dragons-crown-vanillawares-most-expensive-project

An interesting note from the articles is that Kamitani said that this is Vanillaware's most expensive game so far at a cost of about $1 million. So $1 million to develop this game for both PS3 and Vita. Seems insanely low for me, perhaps because I'm used to those huge dev costs of other games everywhere.

Anyway. I can't wait to get my hands on this one in a couple of weeks.

Japanese developers and their frugality isn't an unknown. It's why they shyed from making HD consiole games this gen beca use hiring the workforce required to make an HD game on a similar timeframe to western developers would greatly inflate budgets with no gurantee of increased sales that corresponds to the budget increase.

Interesting, but I wouldn't call it frugality. I suppose the budget is part of the reason they shied from HD gaming for so long, but I don't think it is the main one.

I know that this "reasonable earnings" policy extends not just to gaming, but even the top guys on the biggest companies in Japan earn very down-to-earth salaries. What happens is that when compared to the dozens of millions of dollars that western CEOs earn, Japanese salaries/expenses might seem frugal when they are just "reasonable" ( which in turn contributes greatly to minimize their companies' expenses).

So should I wait for a local Dragon's Crown release in Aus, or import one? It will probably have an online pass right? Bah. Why does localization take so long :(

Not sure if posted already, but if you want Puppeteer on Via, ask Shuhei Yoshida: http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2013/07/want_to_play_puppeteer_on_vita_ask_shuhei_yoshida
I don't want a port though, vita needs exclusives, i want a spinoff or a sequel.

Forget that God eater 2 trailer

http://t.co/zPkxyIzD1G

Video is private, i can see it here

Finally it's possible to see some story(and good looking close ups)

I'm happy to wait a couple of months for a local release. I don't want to miss out on any DLC.

I'm having the same debacle. At this rate I think I'll end up importing the PS3 release with DLC from the US store (seeing as how all I really need is the voicepack and that's free), enjoying local multiplayer on it and then eventually getting the Vita release when it comes over here.

It's always the games I'm really interested that have the longest wait to get a PAL release :(
Neither of them are direct screen captures so I'll just wait until we get that. It's too hard to tell from those really.
Yeah agreed. Once we start getting direct screen captures or direct feed footage we'll be able to know how decent it looks.

Vita looking alright still? After seeing that video for Killzone: Mercenary I've suddenly gotten the urge to buy a PS Vita, I just don't know if it's worth it. I bet all you guys think it is though!

How does that PS+ stuff work -- if I sign up and get a bunch of free games but later on cancel the subscription. What then?

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
I saw quite a few neat games on the store that I should get around to checking out eventually, because I was busy with non-Vita related matters for a good while.

I love my vita, just look at its lineup to decide if it's worth(imo yes obviously lol).
About ps+, you sign up and every month you get some games that you can play and download everytime you want while you are subscribed.
If you cancel you can't play those games, if you re-subscribe you can play all those games again.
All the games you buy using ps+ exclusive discounts are yours forever even if you are subscribed no more.

Dunno if this interests many in the Frathouse, but WRC 4 is coming to Vita.

From Milestone's FB page:

Hi Guys, WRC 4 IS COMING!!!

Charged by adrenalin, the official 2013 FIA World Rally Championship videogame will be available in October for PlayStation®3, PlayStation®Vita, Xbox 360® and Windows PC®

Good stuff. The PSP had quite a nice selection of racers - I'd actually call the racing genre one of the PSP's strongest suites - and I'm happy we can see such a repeat.

Huh. There's been a typo at a local Gamestop near me. They're selling the 3G version cheaper than the wifi version at the moment. It's some package deal including a 4 gb memory card, a bag and sly cooper or all stars or some such. Not terribly expensive either – 1700 SEK (around USD 200, give or take).

Fucking hell. I don't need more games. I really don't. Why am I considering this?

Milestone showing the love again!

I hope they actually put some effort in this time. WRC3 was shite on the Vita.

Give it a proper career mode this time and I'll buy the shit out of it.

That's what I hope, too. Felt a little King of Fighters XII, if you get my analogy. We just need our XIII with WRC4 on the machine.

It's a good price imo, you will only need to get a bigger memory card(16gb at least lol) if you intend to go heavy on digital.

VitaGAF, I've been eyeing Assassins Creed 3 Liberation for a while now.

Sell me on it.

Ps. I can get either for roughly 20euros and a weeks wait from Amazon or she'll out an extra tenner and just download it. Ie. Is it worth 20 or 30 euros?

The less you can pay it the better is. 20 is almost too much for such a buggy game...

I got it at launch and hated it. Takes hours before the game takes off and even then it isn't great. It has lots of annoying glitches, the missions are bland for the most part and the story sucks. The disguise system is terrible. Oh and remember how annoying that hold the Vita up to a bright light part was in Uncharted? This game does this all the time. Not just once. It looks nice and the platforming is typical Assassins Creed. That's all the good I can say about it.

If you are a fan of Assassin's Creed games then you will get your money out of it either way, but 20 would be a far better price to pay. I didn't really experience any bugs myself, but I remember being unimpressed with civilians popping in and out of existence half the time, and some of the side bits (shipping, 'multiplayer') aren't worth your time at all

You are best looking at its library and seeing if the type of games you like are on their.

For me it has a great selection but it does have its problem areas as well

Strongest areas

indie games
Possibly its strongest area at the moment. Huge choice and plenty on its way.

Action hunting
things like god eater, ragnraok and soul sacrifice which I love, and then there are others on the way like God eater 2 and toukiden (or what ever its called)

Fighting games
Nice selection here as well. Mortal combat is awesome (character models are low res but its the only issue) as is DoA and UMvC3.

Racing games
Good selection here with sonic allstars, wipeout and need for speed.

Sports games
I dont play many but I know my brother really likes Fifa and I love Hotshots gold. I hear vitua tennis is pretty damn amazing as well.

Weaker areas

RPG's
Odd one this. Its weak in regards to Vita RPG's. However there are a lot of PSX and PSP RPG's on there. So this depends on if you have played those or not.

Shooters.
Unit 13 was great fun but resistance and CoD were both lacking. Restance had an OK single player but pretty terrible online while CoD was the exact opposite with pretty terrible single play and an OK online. However Killzone is on the way and looks pretty awesome

So take a good look at the library and see if there is stuff for you on their. There are a lot of games out despite the meme. Whether they are to your taste is the real question.

The hardware is fantastic though and the ability to play PSX and PSP games is really good because PSX games actually look pretty nice on the vita screen and I never had a PSP.

I bought it at launch and while I don't regret doing so (i got it retail and traded it later) its a very average game.

It has some interesting ideas with its personas but they fail to use them well and you end up just using the same persona almost all the time.

It is a big buggy mess so yes it is a full fledged AC game.

Its frame rate is pretty poor at times.

The combat didnt reall feel very good but then it doesn't in any AC game.

There is a certain puzzle that you need to do that is moving a ball by tilting the Vita and its totally broken. Luckily its only done once.

Multiple times you have that hold the vita up to a light thing. Its broken again and will drive you crazy.

Story is terrible and pretty much makes no sense for the most part.

Voice acting is just dire.

I still had fun with it though ***looks up*** somehow.

I loved CoD's "Horde" mode though. Can't recall the name of it, but it was easily the best part of the package for me, and something I could see myself playing from time to time.

The shooting department is not that weak imo, there are uncharted and edf that are great and we could add stardust and other similar games

I would like to add to the strong ones:

Platformers:
there are lots of platformers, little big planet, 2 rayman, mutant blobs etc, many metroidvania like guacamelee, knytt underground, batman and maybe more

About the rpg, actually vita is weak, but ys celceta, valhalla knights 3, final fantasy x/x-2, demon gaze, holy sorcery story, dragon's crown(yes imo it deserves to be considered a rpg) and more are coming.

It's a decent game. Not the Vita's finest moment but it's got the Assassin's Creed vibe if you're into that. You'll forgive the sub-native resolution when you start exploring the open world. It's actually fun to traverse the environment, pan the camera around and remember that you're playing on a handheld. Plus, Aveline's a pretty cool protagonist, one of the best female leads in recent memory.

As for the price, I only paid a little over $20 for it when there was a flash sale last Christmas on PSN. I don't know if I'd have been happy to pay more. But again, if you're an AC fan, it's not a bad option. (People have even said it's more fun than AC3. I can't comment since I haven't played that game yet. But I have played a little of AC2 and AC:L isn't bad compared to it. My favorite part of AC is the parkour and this game has plenty of that.)
