Seconded. Get YouTube5 Safari Extension to force a bunch of sites that have mpeg4 videos for mobile to cough them up.

Disappointing :/

There's no HTML5 for Twitch & a few other sites that I use which means pretty poor performance. Maybe I'll just add a Boot Camp partition just for watching streams.

As brianmcdoogle suggested, use Chrome for those sites, which has it built-in.

FYI, Twitch has a simple HTML5 player if you tell it you're using an iPad (Safari prefs > Advanced > Show Develop Menu; Develop Menu > User Agent > Safari for iPad). No idea why they don't offer this up to people without Flash installed.

Lazy user agent detection instead of something more robust. (I do it all the time when deadlines get too close.)

Chrome still runs stream worse than they'd be running if it was on Windows - It's irritating to see 720p streams struggle with that kind of hardware. I'll have to try out the Twitch HTML5 player

For anybody trying out 10.9: is there still the linen background for notifications, login, etc.?

I didn't get to see the entirety of the available live blogs, so I have zero clue on what's up with it.

Flat background, similar colour. There's a screenshot of it here, albeit in Portuguese.

Did it ever had more ports than that?

Or were you simply expecting that number to increase? Not to be expected in the brave new world of wi-fi (especially with AC). In need, keep a gigabit switch handy.

I think I'll jump on board on one of these puppies, probably Time Capsule. Our wi-fi at the company is crap. Need an updated Express as well!

Yeah, expanding ethernet through switches is like the easiest thing ever.
Even better, you can consider internet speed and LAN speed separately. Like 10/100 for the router but gigabit or higher on the switch. Furthermore, if your router acts up you can take it down or replace it without interrupting LAN operation.

Can I also save all of my Pages documents etc on an external HDD and put it back on my MacBook Air?

You can download Mountain Lion from the App Store and make a USB installer.

What year model Air? Recent Airs have internet recovery, where if you format the hard drive, it'll download a copy of the OS over WiFi for you to reinstall it.

Nevermind, got help in the WWDC thread and did it. Thanks anyway guys.

Another thing though, let's say I get a notification from Facebook in my Notification Center and go to watch that on Facebook.com - why isn't it automatically gone from the NC? Why do I always have to remove it from there? Can't that be changed?

I think it's going to be implemented in iOS 7. You view a notification via one of your devices, and it's gone from everywhere else.

Could be wrong/could have misinterpreted it.

Well that's one thing,

The thing here is entirely on OS X. So when I got a Facebook notification in my NC on Mountain Lion, and I go to Facebook.com to watch that notification, then the notification isn't gone in my NC. So now, I have 5 notifications in my NC even though I have already read them on fb.com.

Also, I think we should have a dedicated Mac |OT| or OS X |OT| in community.
We really should have a general Mac OS X OT in the community forum. I can't seem to find a thread for Maverick?

So for some reason today, I am not receiving my iMessages on ML. 10.8.4

It has been working just fine until today. My phone receives them, but nothing on my laptop. Quitting and opening iMessages doesn't do anything. None of the recent messages are there. Any ideas how to fix this?

EDIT

Never mind. Signing out and then back in fixed it.

Is there any way to have Contact pictures pulled from Facebook, but nothing else? Probably not but I have 0 desire to have FB mess with my Address Book, but it would be nice to automatically have peoples' photos added and changed.

Is anyone aware if there's a way for me to remove directories from /Volumes that have been mounted previously, but are no longer connected? Can I simply get away with doing an 'rmdir' on the folder, or is there another way it should be done?

If I try and use diskutil it obviously needs the disk to be there.

Does it matter? I don't think I ever really go in there by terminal to look at what's in there unless it's mounted anyway.

That said, I jsut went in and it doesn't list anything except what's mounted....

In other news, my screensharing has been disabled. It seems it's related to my firewall, as inside I see three services having been added and blocked:
KDC
netbiosd
screensharingd

anyone know why or how these were added? also, "allow connections" doesn't restore my screensharing, although disabling firewall completely does.

Should I upgrade? I purchased my Macbook Pro halfway through 2011 at some point.
I'm currently running 10.6.8 and use my Mac primarily for school, playing music, slight graphics work and some gaming. (mostly LoL)
Also, would upgrading affect my Windows partition? I would assume not but I may as well get clarification just in case.
I was about to purchase Mountain Lion but then noticed all the reviews were saying not to upgrade and that they experience performance. Were those people just being trolls or are they serious?
I trust GAF over them so tell me what to do please.

Hey guys, need some advice.

I just upgraded the ram in my 2008 Macbook Pro (not unibody) from 2 to 4GB. Feeling a little courageous now, and was wondering if I should upgrade to Mountain Lion or just stick with Snow Leopard.

2.4GHz Core 2 Duo
4GB RAM
GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB

Just wondering if it's gonna be sluggish or not, as my computer is fine as is, but would obviously like some of those new features. Or perhaps just try to make Lion 10.7 happen?

I had a late 2008 model MacBook Pro (the first unibody ones) with similar specs and it ran Lion fine. The most important upgrade seems to be RAM for newer versions of OS X, and you just updated that.

If you do decide to upgrade, skip straight to Mountain Lion. Although I can understand why some people prefer to stay on Snow Leopard, there's no reason to stay on Lion with Mountain Lion out.

Hello guys!
A big problem just surfaced on my Mac Book Air 2012.

I thought Firefox was getting a bit slow somehow and decided to reboot the whole thing since it had been a few days since I last shut down the MBA.

Problem is: Mountain Lion won't boot anymore. When I try to boot it, the MBA just shuts down. I can boot Bootcamp on the same disk just fine (using it right now to type this) and also the recovery tools, but if I try to boot OS X, it just shuts down...

Is there anything I can do? I don't have a Time Machine unfortunately...

You're a big guy.
Hey guys,

been looking to upgrade the RAM on my early 2011 Macbook Pro. from 4 to 8GB How recommended is going for a pair of matched RAM instead of just adding another set of 4?

Hold cmd-R as soon as the startup chime bongs. Use included disk utility, terminal and Safari to figure out what's wrong and then fix it.

You have two slots; is your 4GB a single stick or a pair of twos? If the former, just get another single 4GB and it will match enough.

I already accessed recovery mode, but Disk Utility can't seem to find anything wrong with the hard drive.
I really don't know where to start looking, I check generic keywords like "mac shutting off at startup" and there seem to be a fair amount of people who got that problem, but there's little to no followup in most cases and where there is it pretty much always something about time machine, reinstalling ML or going to a Genius Bar.

If I reinstall Mountain Lion, is it going to wipe my applications and data? I have some important stuff in there... >_>

=====

Update: I didn't saw the "verify the hard drive's authorizations" button in Disk Utility. There were TONS of errors, but it didn't let me repair them. Checking the drive integrity once again after that finally displayed errors, that cannot be repaired either.

So I have to format this thing, or so Disk Utility says.

Is there anyway I can backup stuff I have on my Mac partition or am I screwed?

Are you doing this through cmd+R boot? the disk utility on the recovery partition allows actioning some repairs you can't do while booted in.

IF the HD itself has an error, it's possible even teh recovery partition is borked.

Do you have a recovery USB drive made?

In other news, I'm pretty sure I've done a reinstall of the operating system in place that did nothing to my data and just replaced OS files.

You need to replace what is in there as there are only two slots, so nowhere to just 'add another 4'. Get a matched set and sell the old ones for $10-20

You could plug an external HDD into the MacBook, install a fresh copy of ML to it from Recovery mode, boot off of the external HDD (by holding down Option during startup), then try to backup your files from the internal SSD.

I didn't saw the "verify the hard drive's authorizations" button in Disk Utility. There were TONS of errors, but it didn't let me repair them.

Disk Utility has two sets of verify/repair buttons. One set, on the left, it for 'permissions' (presumably what you've found in your language), and one set (on the right) for the filesystem, which have no special label, just 'verify disk' & 'repair disk' in English.

You need to run the latter until it runs clean. Depending on what the problem is, it may do this immediately.

Another thing to try:
Boot in Safe Mode

Jubern

Member
Yes, I noticed the second set which was what I was saying in my last post :)
However no dice. I can verify (tons of error) but not repair permissions, same with filesystem.

I can't boot in safe mode either, or maybe I'm just doing it wrong. I do what it says, but if I just press Shift when the chime comes in, it just takes a bit longer and starts up Bootcamp. If I first press Alt to go to the partition selection menu, select the OS X and hold Shift from there, it just shuts down.

I have a Genius Bar appointement in 30 minutes, there's an Apple Store 5 minutes from my work place. I'll keep you guys updated! Your help is much appreciated.

I recently had my SSD fail. Thankfully it was within warranty, so I didn't have to throw NZ consumer law in their faces and fight for a free fix.

It failed to boot very gracefully, just sitting in the loading screen forever, and when I tried to recover/format/anything else it told me I didn't have write access to the partitions. It was a somewhat transparent failure, in fact.

Just so you guys know what you might see in such a case :)

Just came back from the Genius Bar. Filesystem damaged, had to erase the partition. The guy managed to boot up an OS X session in order for me to try and backup some stuff I couldn't before, but none of the two things I wanted (my iTunes and iPhoto libraries) were salvageable. At least I got the photos' master.

Ugh.

I have three separate types of backup. An offsite historical backup via CrashPlan, an onsite Time Machine and an onsite CCC bootable clone. /smugness

Hard drives and offsite online backup is cheap as dirt. There is no excuse.

My bad, really. Just finished reinstalling everything.

I think what happened is that when I first got my Mac I checked how Time Machine worked and necessitated a disk/partition to itself, I thought "meh, later". And never checked again >_>

I can't repartition my 1 Tb external drive since it's in ex-FAT and don't see myself buying another hard drive immediately, for various reasons. Is there a good backup tool I could/should use where I'd be able to backup to said external drive as it is now?
