NPD Sales Results for July 2007

Guys, guys, we all know why Wii came in #1 in July.

It's obvious isn't it? Nintendo THEMSELVES are buying most the Wiis off the market. And when retailers need to restock, Nintendo sells back what they've bought from the retailers themselves. Genius!

Of course, they're riding on DS sales to offset the losses incurred by the buy-and-sell scheme.

Oh Nintendo, you pulled a fast one on us! But not me, nope; I'm the only one who knew about this scheme. We all know Wii is a fad and the PSTriple and X360 will ultimately come out on top.

:lol

I'd buy!

Actually, I haven't seem him on GAF recently... in the past week or so, at least. I'm sure he's out there... you can't escape the eyes of the Wafflemeister.

I'm picture a Wii with hands and legs (and a little Mario cap) standing on a hill made of broken 360s (3 red lights, of course) and PS3s... the Wii is gritting its teeth in determination, planting high a flag with the Nintendo logo. Standing a bit lower on the pile but still clearly on top, we see see Shigeru and Iwata holding DSs (each spewing forth dollar bills) and grinning madly.

One word sits at the bottom of this image... Nintendomination

Perhaps a few Allards and such could be scattered around the background, running around feverishly looking for scraps in the hardware pile?

It's a work in progress...

This post would make sense, if people were reacting like that.

Wii fans are making a bigger deal out of this than anybody. It's like you guys are trying to respond to a situation that didn't occurred.

Wii isn't like the anti-christ to gaming, and the 360 and PS3 aren't some sort of last hurrah of gaming.
Get a fucking grip. Wii is a good thing for this industry, and 360 and PS3 will keep being the systems you want them to be, what you bought them for.

Seriously, for fucks sakes. *Oh noes the Wii fit* How does that affect you? Finally this industry is going to bitch slap everyone that said Gaming will never be more than some "nerd" hobbie. We are reaching to the mainstream. Thanks to the Wii. 360 and PS3 won't turn into dust because of it, get real.
Wow, Merovignian. What a turn around. Not too long ago, you were having a serious meltdown in one of these NPD threads.

I especially remembered since it was one of my first NPD in lurk mode.

Sorry fellow PS3 owners, this is my fault.

My consoles for the last three generations have been (all bought at launch):
PS1 & Amiga CD-32
PS2 & GC
Wii & PS3

Paper Mario is just a GC game with new controls.

PGR is just an Xbox game with prettier graphics
Motorstorm is just a PS2 game with prettier graphics

See how it can work both ways. I don't think anyone will claim that the Wii has met it's potential, apart from maybe Wii Sports, and this is as much down to lazy/unimaginative developers than any failing of the Wii.

But you know that really.

I pretty much used to come to gaf just to make fun, and act like a retard. Then i got banned like two times or three and started just lurking, and i found out GAF isn't that retarded. Amongst all the stupid fun, and kids melting down, trolling, trash talking, you can actually see some good conversations about the industry. heh

I still only mainly lurk, only stepped in now for NPD, i'll continue to lurk around after this :lol

Roders5 said:

What, one or two guys say something like that because of some stupid fear of the wii, and then suddenly the whole Wii fanbase over here as to draw attention to them?

Just sounds stupid. Like when i'm reading those threads, where there's like 3 pages of guys complaining about people trolling some game, and how the mods are asleep, then you try to find the trolls and soon find out that the "Trolls" consisted of one or two guys. Really, the hyperbole is really something sometimes.

Anyway gotta go, time is up, this wireless modem is expensive as shit, and it's time to go continue my vacations :p

Enjoy the meltdowns

Most people, including Sony and Pachter, both who announced it publicly, expected the PS3 to outsell the 360 because it had a price drop -- so it didn't really outperform anyone's expectations. It's utter inability to get ahead in a month where it dropped its price is the death knell, not it's usual poor showing.
GAF's average guess for the PS3 was 156k, it beat that... therefore it can be said that it outperformed most of our expectations.

Being ahead for one month wouldn't have changed Sony's situation... nor does being behind 11k. Look at it this way... the 360 wasn't ahead by 11k, it was behind by 255k ... the PS3 wasn't behind by 11k, it was behind by 266k. The 360 is not the PS3 biggest threat, the Wii is. The PS3 biggest concern isn't the 360 outselling it, it was selling less than 20k a week. We're letting these fanboy arguements warp your perspective.

No, but barely getting a bump after a price drop does change Sony's situation. Since release the conventional wisdom had been that it will really start to move after a price drop. It didn't move enough to get it over the 360. And yes, it's important to be over the 360 because there are any number of developers who are making HD games that are going to not bother to make them multiplat unless the PS3 can get it's shit together.

That 57% would mean something if the original number hadn't been so low. The difference was what, 50K units in a market where it's several million behind? Yeah, that's a bump.

Now take a look at the best possible 3 year period that either Sony or Nintendo ever had in the time period posted - and tell me if you find anything coming close to $3.6 billion in profits. Now do you really think the X360 is poised to outperform Sony or Nintendo's best 3-year period in the past 10 years?

While, yes, I agree with the rest of your post, it's brought to light just how much money Nintendo are raking in:

Code:
FY* Sony** Nintendo Microsoft
2006 75,000,000 [b]894,000,000[/b] -1,262,000,000
2007 -1,969,000,000 [b]1,489,000,000[/b] -1,892,000,000
2008 -237,000,000 [b]680,000,000[/b]

= 3,063,000,000 for Nintendo. And isn't that just Q1 of the 2008 results? I think they'll surpass that target.

Not that this helps Microsoft much, though.

Not on this NPD. The price drop shows up next month along with the Bioshock sales, which means this is as good as it's going to get for Sony for awhile, since Halo 3 follows on the heels of that.

It doubled it's sales and according to Gamestop is sustaining that level. This is PS3 getting "it's shit together." If it isn't, where does that leave the 360 which has been selling at the this same level for 6 month?.

the key thing really is that we're going to have to get over our own impatience and wait to see what happens to ps3 in august and if it actually does maintain some or all of this boost. i agree with some of your aforementioned posts, it's irrelevant whether or not ps3 actually jumps over 360, it really is about how it performs in its own right. but july gives us no indication except to say that it's going to still be an uphill climb to overcome 360s overall lead, and forget about chasing down the wii. that's never happening.

While I certainly do NOT agree with the original poster, but what you're saying is completely ridiculous. RE4, Zelda TP, and Super Paper Mario literally WERE Gamecube games. As in, those exact games were up and running on GC (with SPM never seeing release, so it really is a true Wii game in the end).

Resistance and Motorstorm could NEVER have existed on the PS2 even in heavily modified form. PGR is another story, but is literally a different game. Those Wii games were appeared on Gamecube with only the slightest of changes.

I still don't believe any of the library should be analyzed as such, however.

Plus, they have nothing to combat the upcoming Halo 3 onslaught!

nintendos 'big 3'

plus the enormous 'fad' they are currently surfing the wave of will ensure they will not only be fine, but they will turn staggering profit throughout the halo frenzy. You really think brawl won't sell? It did obscene numbers on GC.

I'd agree. If the PS3 slips back down to its previous levels its in big trouble. Perhaps I should have stated that this is first step towards the PS3 getting it together. If the system can sustain these sale through the rest of the year (I think it will), it'll be in a decent posistion for next year. It won't be first or second, but it won't be dead.

They sold 100K in Japan and 250K in the U.S. And they sure as hell sold more than 110K in PAL territories. And we have August sales in the west, too. Wow.

I was just remembering the reactions when the Wii and the wiimote were unveiled. The overwhelming majority said it would never work and that the name would never stick. I recall reading "They're not even fighting for third at this point!" The DS got pretty much the same reaction and there were many that felt the "superior" PSP would win out. Remember the pic with the 3 PSP players and the lonely DS player? Nintendo is laughing all the way to the bank.

My favorite doom and gloom for the Wii were the people who said that our arms would get too tired to play the games. So funny.

Also don't forget that MS had to settle that 1 billion $.

And MS finally has a machine which can make money if component prices drop.

So I've realized that at this rate of sales, Wii is two or three months away from reaching what GCN had sold in the US before dropping to $100.

You know the much publicized Amazon PS3 ranking a few weeks ago? It stayed in the top 5 for at least two weeks but has rapidly fell to the late teens this week. The PS3 won't sustain the sale it got immediately after the price drop just based on that.

I think after the GC, Nintendo knew they actually had to try and be innovative while maintaining the high level of fun that they have always developed. With GC, they weren't trying. I remember they stated that they laid the buttons out like that to be more intuitive and other garbage, one reason why the GC was really lackluster. Then they were too bullheaded to do anything about it. At least when the XBox came out with the grappy brick pad, they promptly released the Controller S and made it all better.

Now, with the Wii and the DS, it is almost as if they tested it out on a variety of game types and players (not just quirky japanese-game lovers or something), found the winning formula, and ran with it, despite what 95% of us thought.

Kudos to them. I am far happier having Nintendo as our overlords than Sony. Keeping MS in 2nd keeps them trying hard, too. If they got first, they would start raping us with high prices, worse microtransactions, etc. A comfortable second for MS is a good thing. :)

Yes, it is, because as many as half of the people you're talking about didn't predict it that way. Again, the GAF aggregate doesn't tell you how many people predicted one way or another, it tells you what the aggregate votes came out to, which takes into account the large numbers that predicted Sony would overshoot the 360 and the numbers who said it wouldn't. So if half the group said it wouldn't, then saying most is certainly disingenuous.

Oh, you do know there's a difference between the aggregate and the average, right?

It doubled it's sales and according to Gamestop is sustaining that level. This is PS3 getting "it's shit together." If it isn't, where does that leave the 360 which has been selling at the this same level for 6 month?.

So we're using Gamestop as the new NPD? Where does it leave the 360? Millions of consoles ahead with one of the best attach rates ever. In other words, where Sony wish they could be.

You don't honestly believe PS3 is outselling 360 3:1 in Europe, do you? PS3 outsold the 360 in Europe by MAYBE 20% in July. In August, expect 360 to go back to outselling the PS3 over there (european price cuts in August).

Plus, that 10% more thing is ONE month. Think of how August's NPD will look. I wouldn't doubt that the 360 could outsell the PS3 by 100k units or so. Then September, it could be by 200k units, who knows. Unless Sony does a drastic price cut, it is going to keep getting outsold by large margins.

That said, The PS3 outsells the 360 by probably 50k in Japan in an average month. In Europe, I really can't believe that Sony would be gaining another 50k over the 360 in sales, especially since, in the largest market, The UK, the 360 seems to outsell the PS3 week in and week out, based on software sales, etc.

They're a part of things, but that doesn't make them a reliable measure for the whole anymore than asking me what I think is a good way to determine GAF's opinions.

Yeah, why are some people in this thread believing Sony's bullshit number that PS3 is outselling 360 3:1 in Europe? It simply isn't.

Estimations from other sites show PS3 outsold 360 in Europe in July by about 20% (30,000 units). That is a FAR cry from 3:1.

Amazon isn't good when it comes to actual unit salesand actual NPD rankings but if something appears in the top 10 for long periods of time, it usually sells upwards of 150K unit. It's a good barometer of what's popular.

This held true for RE:4 Wii, Mario Party 8, the Wii itself, Wii Play, the DS, Guitar Hero 360, Guitar Hero PS2 and the PS3(right after the price drop).
