How the hell did Sony expect anyone to play the Vita outdoors?

With the given support, I don't even think they expected anyone to buy it.

I got my Vita toplay PS1 games and some stuff PSplus offers. Never take it outside besides, in my country is more dangerous to get that kind of stuff outside.

why would i want to live there?

PD: It really sucks under even indirect sunlight. Hopefully next Vita version will address this matter.

I have a Galaxy S3 and it's putrid outside. Especially if you use auto-brightness to save on battery life. I come out of the subway here in the city and bam have to go and manually set the brightness to see shit. I'm going to disagree with you on this one my man!

I was talkng about in the shade though. I have no issues with my s3's display when outside in the shade, I can't understand how anyone can. If you are talking about in direct sunlight, well yeah. Though I was talking about in the shade.

No matter how bright your device's screen, it's not brighter than the sun, gnoma sayajin?
The shade dood.... Th ssssshhhhhaaaaaddddeeeee! :p

This thread kind of reminded me of when I was a little kid, and I'd play Game Boy in the back seat of my parents' car during long drives. When it got to be night, I couldn't see anything, so what I did was pause the game, wait for a car to come up behind us, then play during the brief moments I could get some light off the headlights of the car behind.

Fuck, that's really nostalgic.

I haven't been able to "game outdoors" during the day since the GBA. All the phones I've owned, my PSP, my 3DS, and my Vita are IMPOSSIBLE to play with in direct sunlight outside.

However I don't see how this is a dealbreaker. I'm not 9 years old. My time outside is spent walking somewhere or doing a physical activity. My portables get portable play time when I use public transit OR if I have a break at work/school/friends house/gf's house
Lol yes I can see how wanting to play my Vita while outside in the summer could give the impression that I'm nine years old.

With all the talk at how beautiful the Vita's OLED display is, I'm surprised nobody ever talks about how it is impossible to play the damned thing outside; Shit I'm equally surprised Sony let this, what I see as a massive flaw for a bloody portable console, design ever reach the development stage. How the hell did Sony's engineers expect to play the console on the go? It is fucking baffling for Christ sakes!

Ok so now that I got my mini rant off my chest, how does vitagaf deal with this when you are out and about?
Have you figured out a way to play it on the go, or have you simply given up trying to play it outside?

I agree with you. I tried to play with my Vita many times in many places, and is absolutely impossible to play it with sunlight, outside and inside.

But, that doesn't happen with my Xperia Z. That phone screen maybe is not an OLED super-colourful screen, but that LCD is strong enough to let me see everything in the street with the sun high in the sky.

I wish a revision of Vita with that screen. Doesn't matter if is not OLED, doesn't matter if the blacks are not perfect...what really matters is to see what happens in the screen. But with the poor Vita sales, I think a revision is not very probable.

I pray for a possible Xperia Vita, that would be the perfect portable device. Maybe in two years... maybe.

You shouldn't be looking at any screen like the iPhone's or Vita's without having a light on in your room anyway. It's really bad for your eyes.

I do this all the time but I usually turn the brightness down to the lowest possible. Can you elaborate on why this is bad for your eyes?

How else am I suppose to do stuff while the wife is sleeping?

Strains your eyes. A secondary effect is that you'll fall to sleep slower because of the type of light you've been looking at.

You could stick on a matte screen protector, I guess?

This reminds me of the original GBA. Even outside it was still too reflective to see the screen properly, and it wasn't even backlit.

Not such a major issue for me though since I mostly play inside, but the same thing crossed my mind when I first took my Vita outdoors. Impossible to play in direct sunlight. I've had no problem under shade though. It's dull, but you can see whats going on. Places like the park, or at the beach I just lie on my back, elbows on chest, and play so it's against the sunlight. Always go full brightness outdoors.

edit:

Tried the Hori Matte protector. Not worth the visual downgrade in my opinion. Makes your screen look grainy :/

People play games outside?

Edit: I remember with the DS you can't really play it in the sunlight unless the light hits it at a certain angle. If it doesn't, the screen is stupid hard to see.

It's been brought up numerous times, and yes the thing is completely unplayable outside. Even when I've found myself waiting on someone in my car when it's not bright outside, it's impossible to play.

I haven't successfully used a mobile electronic device outside since Boktai on the GBA. That was like 10 years ago. Shit's impossible, man.

I don't know any adult who spends significant amounts of lounge time outside. The last time I did was when I was a little kid.

Would it be great if current portables blocked out the sun? Sure. But is this a thread worthy complaint for an adult? Nah.

Those beautiful broody, battleship grey skies of our emerald isles offer a perfect environment for playing the PSP Vita.

For two weeks or so perhaps, we will be forced to endure the onslaught from that dreaded fiery ball in the sky (purely to allow the odd game of test cricket to be uninterrupted). At this point we must be forced to rely upon our non backlit hand-held consoles.

Be assured with unabashed glee though that, the rain clouds will arrive imminently to patter deliciously upon our Vita's screen protectors.

I tried to play Unit 13 on the train to London, impossible as most of the missions took place at night.

It annoyed me, I thought maybe the developers should have kept to daytime missions for this reason.

Canada, BC. Granted it is very sunny in the summer, but our weather is much like yours the rest of the year.

I'm in BC too. I don't usually play handhelds outside, but definitely in transit and in cars. I haven't had a handheld that worked well in bright sun since maybe GBA SP.

For me the Vita is usable when I'm in the shade and dial brightness up to max. I have a screen protector on it (nothing special, I think it's the sony one), so I'm not sure if that helps.

My 3DSXL on the other hand seems worse, at least with SMTIV.

Holy fuck, lol. The internet.

I'm going to try the max brightness and see if that helps. I'm using a cheap screen protector too, so I dunno, maybe it is part of the problem? *shrugs*
Come November I won't have to worry about the sun, though I might have to waterproof this bastard if I'm going to be out in BC weather longer than 40 seconds, lol.

I take my lunch break at work in my car. I park on the far end of the lot where there's a ton of shade. My original 3DS on max settings was perfect for this, but the XL is less bright - not so bad that I can't see, though. It's nearly impossible to see anything on my Vita, unfortunately.

As others have mentioned, the problem with Vita brightness is that it doesn't go far enough up OR down. I also like to play portable games sometimes while my wife sleeps, and the Vita is too bright at the lowest settings there.

Mostly unrelated but this reminds of when I tried to use my Nexus 7 with polarized sunglasses on in a car (I wasn't driving). I couldn't see the screen at all and thought it may have died on me. Turns out it was the glasses.

Good luck playing the GBA in the dark because of that too. No backlight = no night time gaming :(

Indeed, I was disappointed to discover that Vita is actually not a great bedtime console because it is too bright to play in the dark. My iPad gets far more use simply because it doesn't hurt my eyes.

Hold the PS button that lights up on the bottom left for a second and a menu will come up to let you turn the brightness up or down. It's also accessible in the main settings under sound and display. Sometimes I turn it down at night to go easy on the old eyes as well.

To OP. I was just laughing at this the other day in the park when I remembered how impossible it is. Great for busses, trains, planes, laundrymat and waiting in general, though. As a fan of Boktai that owned the original GBA, an SP and the brighter SP, sunlight is tough to play in with anything. Had to stick to playing Emerald and Fire Emblem on breaks and commutes instead. FFIV Advance behind a building w/ a Subway sandwich ftw.

I like playing in outdoors (who says videogames and fresh air can not go together?) I always do it under a tree in the park, so I don't have problems with the screen.

If you're on the Okanagan, sure. If you're in Vancouver, that's the biggest overstatement of the year right there.

I can't say I've experienced problems. I've never had issues with brightness. Maybe you're talking about reflections? (It's unclear exactly what the issue is from the rant.) I do sometimes change the angle of the device to avoid those.

Wouldn't want the Vita to have a matte screen though, so I don't know what to tell you.

I do wish the Vitas screen could handle ultra bright sunny weather better, but I fully understand and accept its limitations. Here's a photo from my vacation in Mexico earlier this year. The screen brightness is on max in this pic

In defense of this post the difference between max and min is like none :p

Please don't thread whine, especially with such questionable opinions.
