"Microsoft also announced today a loosening of the Xbox One's regional restrictions. "You could buy a console in any country and use it any country," Whitten said. "You can use any disc in that console.""

Man, it didn't take too long for the "Sony too!" force to pop up.
It's amazing how much of this has happened this year. From the DRM, to the no used games, to the pricing and now to the launch, everything Microsoft has done has tried to be justified by what Sony was certain to do to. For the most part, Sony's actions are based on their own past successes and failures. Microsoft have blundered and flip-flopped all on their own.

And nothing was lost to Microsoft anyway. Smallest of the European markets, where the PlayStation brand is strong.

I really hope that Sony doesn't follow, PS4 in 2014 would be heartbreaking.

They said they expected next gen console sales could go up to a billion units, can't link on rubbish mobile, but its an easy Google, sorry for no link will update later.

That isn't the same as them expecting to sell 1 billion X1's.

Seriously I don't understand why MS has such a twitter presence

The Xbox Support twitter accounts (which are official) have been wrong so many times it's insane they still let them operate

X1 could very well require registering in a supported country but I'll wait until someone other than xbox twitter support says it

I'd do the same if I were you

Just saying

Wow. Sometimes it really feels MS is doing its utmost to alienate their audience. A limited launch (e.g. lower amounts) would've been a smarter option IMO in the other territories.

Does anyone else agree that this will really stunt the userbase, and hence, games?

If this was the only thing wrong with the Xbox One I'd say no, it'd be a temporary hiccup. But it's yet another unfortunate move in a series of unfortunate moves seemingly designed to turn people away.

What can they do, It's smarter to support the regions with the highest sales with as much consoles as possible. Then again, why countries like Brazil get it before Switzerland , Holland and Sweden? And Austria and Germany yes but Switzerland no?. Just Strange.

Doesn't Brazil have like 10 times the population of countries like Sweden? It's not that surprising.

Another 180 turn in this never ending saga of disappointments. It strikes to me that is all rushed and not in forehand to do it right.

Well, it's all guessing until launch I suppose, but I'd say activation works everywhere. Otherwise, this wouldn't be a new problem as Poland was always not going to get the Xbone this year, despite being in the EU.

EDIT: ^ Okay, in this case I'll take everything back I said and state the opposite.

Some Benelux or Nordic people needing a German IP address through VPN for a short amount of time? I'm lending it to you quite cheaply ;)

If MS aren't launching in those markets, they may not have those versions of Xbox live up and running at launch

What the hell? In all of my life as a gamer, I've never seen a company in so much of a mess.

Perhaps they're trying to move units to the US and UK so at least they have a bigger presence in those countries. From a perception perspective, It's better for them to get outsold a little bit in the US than a whole lot if they are spread really thin world wide.

Brazil has a large population and a large economy compared to a lot of the countries that were redacted

So yes it makes sense why Brazil stayed on the list

Still interested to know what caused the redaction

X1 yield problems imo

Yes but its not totally clear on the whole authorisation process when you set up the Xbox One for the first time. It may need to be registered in the country that it is from.

They haven't even started manufacturing consoles yet, I say it's simply stock shortages.

wow if authorization is required in a supported country than used X1's could potentially be worth more to those in non-supported countries than new X1's

That's a strange thought

Jesus Christ, this isn't a freaking ranking of countries, it's a decision on Microsoft's part to release first within territories where they believe they'll be the most successful within, in response to a constrained allotment of course. If the Xbox 360 sold better in Scandinavia or Benelux than Brazil and New Zealand, then they would be on the list in place of them. It's pretty damn simple.

I hardly doubt that New Goatland with a population of 4 million humans and 40 million goats sold more Xbox 360 than any Benelux country or Sweden. And lets not forget that Sweden is the land of Battlefield and Minecraft, those games sell like 10 million copies for each platform...

My thinking is that there are probably about 100k preorders in the countries listed. Why not launch for those as fan service? Sure, costs, but I'm not sure they can build real launch hype in any case in 2014 anymore.

I assumed NZ gets it because they are basically just treated as the same region as Australia in most cases.

About 195 million people in Brazil. The amount buying Xbox One? No idea. Its freaking expensive here. Almost $1000 which most people will pay in 12 split payments of $84.

Yes, you can split the payment here in 12 months for most things.

1/20th actually. Which is about the inverse of the populations in each country who could afford a new generation video game console.

I can't believe they are actually sticking with that lame translation excuse lol. Just be truthful, preorders suck in those locations, we are having yield issues and need to redistribute.

And i don´t think you know where the 180 comes from right?

Of course I do. The DRM change was a 180. Adding a headset or delaying the launch in some countries is not.
Because the term has a specific origin doesn't mean you should repeat it out of context.

Wow they list all the countries in alphabetical order but put new Zealand at the end for some reason. Was pretty pissed off for a second there.
