Platinum games tend not to sell well anywhere. They brought Bayonetta 2 to the WiiU because Nintendo were the only ones willing to bank roll it. They can't spring money from their ass to make games. Somebody has to fund it, and considering their track record outside of Metal Gear Rising, which definitely banked on name recognition, it's probably hard for them to get the funding needed. So desperate platform holders, or in this case Microsoft and Nintendo, are likely extremely appealing to Platinum from a financial standpoint.

Everyone understands why some studios do it. You pay for the development, marketing or whatnot of said game. People are just stating that whatever it's going to be, it's already doomed (in japan) by being on the xbox one.
It will end up the same situation as the 360. Some developers get on board with microsoft early in the gen because of some kind of incentive, and in a very short time they'll end up going back to sony or nintendo, because in japan that's where the market is.

People are misreading the "not for europe or americans" thing. I think it means it is aimed at Japan, not that it is not coming out here.

Exactly. The "doesn't make sense" comment still works within that context since it doesn't make sense for Microsoft to fund a purely Japanese centric game considering their stature within the country.

If I were Platinum I'd just take the money, spend as little as possible making the title. They know it will not sell, would be pointless putting any effort in.

Tell MS the cash is for Lunch Money. When asked for a build, Platinum can just say no we literally used it for lunch money.

That's what I'd want, but my point is basically don't expect it to be a Capcom owned IP.

(I knew about that too though.)

that's what i said

It's probably something new. Their previous IPs aren't worth shit.

Bayonetta isn't worth shit either.

E3 demos for the floor, but they'll want to cherry pick newer stuff for demoing to journalists

Depends on what he means by SDK. If it's "only" the software SDK, then the demo builds could be built with the previous version that did not have the performance drop. If it's devkits, then that's a very different issue but I'd be very surprised if such an problem was on the hardware side...

Yeah, not getting every post here.
Architectural changes this late lead to rushed SDK-changes lead to unwanted results on devkits.

Yes but 15-20% seems like a huge drop. I would imagine that would be enough to force a 1080p game running at 30fps to be forced to drop down to 720p to meet the target frame rate.

The first paragraphs are mostly about release timing. So is he saying Oct. release of XOne? Or that PS4 isn't releasing in Oct?

When was the last time Gies was right about anything to do with the new consoles? He was the guy predicting a 2012 launch for the next Xbox back when it was already obvious that wouldn't happen.

Thanks again cboat, enjoy your stay here in Germany.

That Platinum Games deal really doesn't make any sense. Why won't they bring it over? Platinum Games are core gamers darling so they could at least get some early adopters and some goodwill even if the overall sales won't be big. It's not like they will have good sales in Japan.

That clearly looks like "game NOT for North America or Europe, by the way which makes no sense but whatever."

Seems like either a Japanese only release, or exclusive in Japan only type of deal to me.

Makes a lot of sense if it's going to release much later than the PS4 in Japan. They need something to VERY strongly appeal to the audience or it will be completely DOA.

Fuck that noise. The market not buying into this console is whats killed it. If microsofts policies and console were attractive to its target market, it would be reflected in pre-orders, no matter the controversy.

Eh, to be honest, I disagree. I'm willing to bet that, had the DRM fiasco never existed in the first place, and had the initial reveal not been such a disaster, that the Xbone would probably be much more competitive despite including the Kinect in every box. Maybe slower out-the-gate than the PS4, but it would've been in a far stronger position. I really feel like, if they do end up coming out with a Kinect-less SKU, it's going to be out of sheer, utter desperation to move units and scrape back some marketshare. But even then, they've lost so much mindshare by this point that I feel like it's gonna come down to a long-term strategy to really get back into the game, like what Sony had to do with the PS3 this gen.

I agree that they'll taper off as the generation goes on, but the market is with handhelds and mobile :p

So they let all games run on the same devkits again on the showfloor?
Probably E3 builds on E3 devkits. Hands on with press is probably updated builds or games that weren't ready for E3 (Quantum Break?). They may be affected by the 20% decrease, so no live stream.

I think you guys are misinterpreting his statement regarding Platinum. I think he's saying that the style of game is not for a North American or European audience, not the release of the game of itself.

fy yoi thgouhte poelw er mad about abyoneta going sequeleggy to WeeeeYEWW youl be soemwaht nuhapy babout waht MS i money hateing w/Platfinim/. other jpnj dvs inplay to but KMAIYATown IS ONLY o1 I am solid onon. game NOT for nortamser uior Euroep, btway which maek sno nsense byt hwathever.

My literal translation:

---
FYI, you thought people people were mad about Bayonette going sequel to WiiiiUUUU, you'll be somewhat unhappy about what MS is money-hatting with Platinum. Other Japanese devs are in play too, but KamiyaTown is the ONLY one I am solid on. Game NOT for North America or Europe, by the way, which makes no sense, but whatever.
---

Doesn't sound like it's too ambiguous there. Not for us. Maybe it means target audiences, but I think it means it's intended solely for Japanese release. MS can't let them go, huh?

Yeah, perhaps just a compiler bug. As he said, nothing serious and will be fixed eventually. Sad MS shipped the SDK, though.

I don't know, what he later said (of not understanding the decision) seems to indicate that this is Japan-only.

To be honest.I wouldn't understanding the logic in Microsoft Money hatting platinum. Their games generally dont sell consoles. Maybe a MS exec read too much into the online rage surrounding Bayo 2.

Still as ive said. Im all for Kamiya to be given a large budget and freedom to make something genre defining (or creating). It raises the profile of platinum as a company and adds to their pedigree. If they they can manage to survive the first few years of this generation I honestly believe they will have their DARK SOULS level hit. People forget this studio is less than 7 years old and already has 7 + titles and one big one releasing next year under its belt, all of which are above average and some critically acclaimed. Its only a matter of time.

We already know we get new builds for some games, playable for the public. Like FM5, KI, Ryse.

Man, how can anyone buy the XB1 after seeing all the issues MS is going trough?, so close to launch and yet the innards of it aren't set in stone yet?, who knows how reliable that thing is going to be... after the RROD debacle you'd think people would be more cautious when approaching another device from them, this time the hurdles they are facing seem bigger and worse than on the 360's pre-launch era, and who can forget their humiliating, bi-polar reversals. (and it seems like they're still not done on the 180's just yet)

Damn, some interesting stuff in here, thanks for the quick translations on page 1.

It was worse than usual this time, though I can certainly see why.

Will I get banned for using Xbottles? I think they are going to come at CBOAT hard now for just saying that there is a Kincet-less sku incoming early 2014. Do we really have ay reason to doubt him? I sure don't.

Whoa, this one is awesome and lots of new stuff.

LOL at the newest SDK performance.

Late October launch for PS4 is so nice. This is the first time we've gotten Sony info from CBOAT.

Platinum exclusive is interesting. I wonder what it could be.

No Kinect that early is big. I thought it would happen at some point, but not in March or April. I'm guessing they want to get it out alongside Titanfall.

Wonder what exactly happened to Microsoft this time around. They beat Sony to the punch by being first to launch and also having great support for the first two years. They constantly upgraded their online services and started introducing new experiences into xbox live. And now here we are, months before release and Microsoft is still constantly fumbling the ball.

Its really sad to see because the original xbox got me into console gaming, despite all the available consoles at the time. I loved xbox live and I wouldn't have got into gaming as much without it. They don't seem to be ready for launch and it just makes me wonder what exactly have they been doing these last few years considering the performance of Sony these last few months. Sony hasn't stop throwing the punches and you knew things were going to go down when Kaz mentioned that he had no intention on showing his cards first. Sony is even releasing their console in October! That just shows how on point they are this time around.

And now MS is considering a Kinectless SKU. That just shows how things are right now.
The Third Console curse would be the short answer.

A longer answer would be that Microsoft lost sight of what their console - a video game console - should be focused on and who it's for. It reminds me of when someone said something akin to "we make video games for people that don't play video games." There was a Penny Arcade strip about it, I think.

The Xbox One was (and maybe still is) all about living room media center domination; that's why the Kinect is really so important to Microsoft, it lends legitimacy to the notion that the Xbox One isn't just a loser console for losers, but a respectable set top box for normal people. Think of the harder sell it will be if the ads contain people using the controller as opposed to using Kinect. Despite its growing acceptance, video games and 'gamers' in particular are still surrounded in social stigma.

There's also the hard push for digital only distribution by Microsoft and its Windows 8 platform. I'm sure much of it was directly influenced by industry giants going for strict anti-piracy and anti-used games measures. They're trying to cash in as much as possible - and there's nothing wrong with that per se - but, unfortunately, at the expense of consumer rights and freedoms; they're treating everyone like crooks unwilling to give them every last cent they rightfully deserve.

Kinect could be great for games. There's no doubt about that. However, we would be blind not to see the immense marketing and DRM potential it presents. That's beside the added cost without added benefit it provides to gamers. According to CBOAT, there's an actual possibility now (not just wishliting from us) of a sans Kinect SKU: shafting early adopters and consigning Kinect to useless peripheral once more.

Pride, arrogance, and greed at the assured success of Xbox One has led Microsoft down this road. They'll probably do alright if they continue backpedaling but I'm certain it'll be nowhere near where they envisioned themselves.

I don't know, what he later said (of not understanding the decision) seems to indicate that this is Japan-only.

It can go either way I would think. He could also think it makes no sense to have a japanese centric style game looking at what the xbox is typically known for having.

Yeah, perhaps just a compiler bug. As he said, nothing serious and will be fixed eventually. Sad MS shipped the SDK, though.

It probably has feature changes that some devs want to work with a bit. You'd probably still use an earlier version for game performance test, for example, but to mess around and get a feel for say game PVR you use this kit to test out just what you're getting and if that will cause any concerns for you.

I wonder if all of this is making Respawn regret signing a 1 year exclusive MS contract.

I would think that all of the 180s that MS did that EA would just cancel the contract.

Here is what I think. Hopefully CBoaT will comment on it:

EA decides to "delay" the release of Titanfall so that they have time to port it to PS4 and PS3 and it ends up getting a Day one release on all systems.

I just really truly have a hard time believing that $50 million can buy an MS exclusive.
