Sony: "over a million" PS4 preorders to date

That number might fall down by some. I know I'm cancelling my preorder after Amazon emailed me that I wont get my preorder until January. Sony must have a short supply if I preordered during E3 and still wouldn't get one from amazon until 2 months after launch.

If that's the only reason you're canceling, I wouldn't jump the gun just on those fluctuating release date e-mails from Amazon yet since they've only had placeholder dates like December 31st etc. I'd wait until we all get our release date set to the proper November launch day then see if they don't update yours too.

I was surprised by the number, seems kind of low but what do I know. When the reports came out that Sony was opening the floodgates for preorders and letting retailers take as many as they can get I was thinking like in the millions for launch, like ~2 million. X1 must have shockingly low numbers if PS4 has a mil.

A million preorders is fantastic, I just think there are many doubters here who believe into the whole "core market shrinkage and mobile gaming takeover" shenanigans and want the numbers to vindicate that.

It's a great litmus test, if you post here saying something like "that's not that much" you are probably an xbottle.

Some stated before that next-gen will sell slower than this gen did at its launch. They couldn't have been more wrong. People are starved for next-gen.

Walmart starts their in store preorders for PS4 and Xbox One this Saturday for those still wanting launch day next gen consoles. So preorder numbers will continue to rise.

Also, do the casuals even preorder? That's where the war will be won.

I am not casual and I never preorder anything. I am just very cautious with my money. I don't want to be stuck with red ring like hardware. I will wait a month or two for impressions and then I will casually walk into a store one day and pick one up.

It does seem low if you compare it to the lifetime sales of a console based product, but take this as a comparison.

The Xbox 360 came out on the 22nd of November 2005. By the end of the year it managed to shipped out 1.5 million consoles.

The PS2 sold 500,000 in its first day, and they planned to ship 1.3 million by the end of 2000.

The PS4 (and possibly the Xbox One) is on track to break these records.

Ask MS for their numbers, but don't hold your breath waiting for a response.

definitely, i was hoping past hardware as well, one of them little graphs some gaffers are good to put together, but i guess that data would not be easily accessible

you sure those numbers aren't getting mixed up? the xbox 360 was a worldwide shipment in 2005, most likely. i think the 1.3m was either for the quarter or for the north american region. there were already a million ps2s in japan at that point.

PS2 sold 900,000 units in Japan only over the weekend.

Preordering an expensive piece of hardware seems crazy to me. I plan on picking up a PS4 at some point this year, but I'd like to see them reviewed and out in the wild for awhile before I take the plunge.

One Microsoft representative said he'd pay anyone $1200 if they could find a store still accepting Xbox One pre-orders.

Gamestop is taking them today.

It's a joke. Jack Tretton famously offered $1200 to anyone that could find a PS3 on store shelves at launch, when it was notoriously easy to find everywhere.

My, how the tables have turned.

Microsoft is desperately trying to sell their launch stock, which by all accounts is much smaller than Sony's, and they're failing miserably.

Not sure about the PS2 one, since the source was from here:

The Xbox 360 launch shipment details were from Microsoft themselves.

PS2 sold 900,000 units in Japan only over the weekend.

Yep. No idea how many of those were from pre-orders though.

Good lord. People thinking sales will decrease because ps4 is launching 3 weeks later than they hoped. This place is turning into gamefaqs 2.0

Here's a scoop for you all. Xbox and ps4 will be sold out through Christmas regardless if how many consoles they produce. That's just how it will work out.

I'm not claiming the 'death of consoles' I just think a mixture of casual consumer apathy (most of the launch games are available for PS360), supply constraints and the fact they will be fighting with each other over sales will mean that they don't take off quite aswell as a lot of people on here think they will.

WiiU is on 3.6 million just now, I can't see PS4 and XBO being on any more than 4 million each* by this time next year but I'm sure they won't get anything like the ridicule WiiU gets for it's sales.

1) Everything in your first paragraph perfectly describe the environment of every new gen. There's always overlapping (cross-gen games, people still buying cheaper-priced last gen consoles), that's unavoidable. Eventually that tapers off.

2) It really isn't fair to use the Wii U as a barameter for how the market is going to receive MS and Sony's next consoles. As the poster you're responding to pointed out, Nintendo has fucked up so much of the Wii U's launch that there's really no way to make the case that Wii U is failing because of an unfriendly climate for console gaming. Just because Nintendo is only at 3.6 million doesn't mean that's the ceiling for the other guys, especially since both Sony and even MS have built up way more hype for their machines than we ever saw for the Wii U.

That number is going to roll back quite a bit after today's awful showing and dedicated server news out of MS camp.

I have a feeling a lot of people on here will look silly when PS4 and XBO fail to match the WiiU's 3 million consoles sold in it's first three months on the market and then we get sub 10k PS4 weekly sales in Japan and sub 50k console sales for each on NPD early next year.

This isn't 2005/6 for most people financially, people have Blu Ray & online gaming already and the graphical leap between generations is nothing like it was last time out.

I love these posts.
